As a Mexican, Metal Slug/NeoGeo/SNK speaks to me on another level, we love their games so much. My grandparents in Mexico had small stores nearby and almost all of them had multiple arcade machines or (somehow) store kiosks with modded Xboxes emulating games. Every kid/teen in the area knew about all those games

So many new players just play games as a past time and clearly not a hobby.
And then another such cliche is that altrnate gameplay styles are not as valid as your own favorite, even more so when you DO give that one its proper due respect.

I know turn based strategy is the furthest possible thing from the series’ core gameplay, but I like the genre and I’m interested to see how things translate over. @@ego2133 bitch have you played metal slug before? The boss fight on stage four of game three is basically impossible because of the game’s terrible movement. I’m sorry, but if your only way to beat the million enemies on screen is to memorize exactly where they spawn and what they do AND how to deal with them, you’ve made a bad combat experience. It would be different if the game gave you no lives, and maybe a health bar, but the game’s designed deliberately to make you lose. Fun games can be bad games, they’re not mutually exclusive.
Basically hard and unfair are different things. Dark souls is hard, but I’ve beaten the games many times because they are designed to be beaten. I like hard games, my profile picture is a Dark Souls pfp, but I don’t like unfair games. I have never denied the game isn’t fun, but from an OBJECTIVE standpoint the game is bad.
Then there’s the fact they’re basically pay to win, or if not, there’s no real insentive to be good at the game because there is no penalty for losing. Play with limited continues, and same problem as before: badly designed.

31:03 as a metal slug fan, we are just really desperate. Ok, now jokes aside, we are mostly excited because it’s an actual entry in the franchise with care put into it. It isn’t looking for our money like MSA, and it isn’t made by tencent. We understand that it’s just a spin off, it’s not like it’s called metal slug 8, it’s literally called “metal slug tactics”. Another thing is that SNK said that they wished to make a new “proper” metal slug game a while back. The tactics game is a good sign of this because it shows us that making said game is probably still in their radar

As a Brazilian guy living in Japan for about 16 years, I gotta say: both in Japan and Brazil, back then, Metal Slug was gigantic! Every game center/arcade had at least one copy of the game. About Metal Slug 3, the final mission is the most insane stage I ever saw in a game to this day! It's beautifully designed and every single second is a true survival ordeal. And the whole mission takes almost an entire hour to finish! And when you finish it, it's like you are an '80s action movie hero, only needing to lit up a cigar and relax. This mission even goes far to build how they introduce the final battle. First you fight the boss of MS1, then goes to space, face the boss from MS2, then fights the boss of this game. And after you defeat him, you run away from the ship, only to face him in the skies. Let me tell you, when the music of the final mission from MS1 starts to play, that was epic! Now we knew it was the true final battle! It was about to end and only one side would survive! Oh, man! I could talk about this final stage for hours! Anyway, here in Japan, Metal Slug 6 was not released to PS4, so, I'd stick for the PS3 version. Hope they release the whole package in physical form , someday (not the PS2 version, though) including the XX version. And a proper Metal Slug 8!!

but one time, a lot of my older friends got trough most of the game. since they were running out of cash, the son of the owner of the arcade decided to help them out.
it was insane! all the unexpected twists and turns!
the hadouken throwing prisoner, the aliens betraying the soldiers, then the soldiers fighting the aliens in the background, then the soldiers shooting up at the spaceship. then the soldiers bringing you a metal slug!
then the single soldier sacrificing himself to save humanity!, then the old boss, getting smashed at the end.

Also: if you haven't tried the ports of the Neo Geo Pocket Color games in the series, (1st & 2nd Mission,) they're absolutely worth a look, since they've now been released on modern platforms. They're a totally different type of 2D Run & Gun game, and they're a lot of fun to explore! They have impressive art, in spite of the graphical limitations of their system. They're very ambitious games, and I was surprised at how much life they breathed into the limited animations for each sprite.

meh, a fan? i mean, they have 30 years in advancements in technoloy, and somehow their sprites look worse?
no intricate details, no clever animations, no gritty textures, no world-building, no love for the product. just a lazy cashgrab.
there is a spite based rpg called "octopath traveler" which i believe has the exact look and feel a modern metal slug game should have. although the sprites on that game are tiny, the overall scene is rich with detail.
another example of advacements along the same path of sprite games is "guilty gear" a 2d fighing game with increditbly detailed and fluid sprites. i believe that they have recently moved to cell shading, but they perfectly simulate a 2d sprite look (same thing with octopath traveler, i believe they are cell shaded but made to look like sprites)
those games are testaments that you can still evolve the art of 2d sprite games, instead of moving backwards in time.

I would prefer something like branching paths that take entire levels, and not just branching level sections, secret levels, multiple endings, unlockable characters, challenges... Give it more replayability value.
      ... And add a 4-player co-op mode.
Hell, if we get _really_ experimental, they can add in multiplayer game modes: Capture the flag, death match, king of the hill, etc.

Great vid. Your memories about the arcade days remind me of my own a bit. I remember when it was an event at the local arcade to see someone beat a game from start to finish. There would be a crowd around the players and everyone would cheer them on and sometimes we would loan them a quarter if need be just to see the end. Good times.

i remember watching the ending of metal slug x for the first time. it was one of the most epic moments in my childhood.
i never thought i would get to see it, since no one could ever get that far,. none of my friends had so much cash.
but one time, a lot of my older friends got trough most of the game. since they were running out of cash, the son of the owner of the arcade decided to help them out.
it was insane! all the unexpected twists and turns!
the hadouken throwing prisoner, the aliens betraying the soldiers, then the soldiers fighting the aliens in the background, then the soldiers shooting up at the spaceship. then the soldiers bringing you a metal slug!
then the single soldier sacrificing himself to save humanity!, then the old boss, getting smashed at the end.
man we were going wild at the arcade.
it was comparable to watching goku go supersaiyan for the first time, to trunks killing frieza, and to the green power ranger joining the rest of the power rangers for the first time. it was a top tier childhood moment.

Coming home from work lying down on couch to check my subs, it was a pleasant surprise to see video pop up. As a fellow Hispanic/Latino myself, I to fucking love Metal Slug. Where I grew up in Arizona, I was unfortunate to have an Arcade near me, but I literally lived close to the border of California. My parents would travel to California a lot and one of the things we go to were Swap Meets. This one particular Swap Meet we go to had a dinky Arcade set up in the corner. Let me tell ya, my older brother and I would always go there for Metal Slug 2 and MvC. Metal Slug (and MvC) were literally a luxury to me as I would only have a fistful of quarters to play it and only when we occasionally travel to California so memories stayed deep with me.
Years go by, older bro joins the military, dont get to play Metal Slug with him anymore. One time we traveled to where he was stationed at for a vacation he greeted me with a handshake and something was left in the palm of my hand. A copy of Metal Slug 7. I know you didn't take too highly of 7, but on god, I fucking played 7 nonstop the whole vacation and even when we traveled back home. Finally a Metal Slug I can just play at home, it meant so much to me, one of my most memorable gifts.
Now it's amazing currently how easy it is to get Metal Slug games. I fucking love the series and love that I can just play them all at home, it's amazing.
When it comes to Metal Slug Tactics, I'm super interested in it, not because of the gorgeous intro like you believe people are hyped about it for, but I legitimately like Tactics games, like Advance Wars. I dont think they are turning Metal Slug into a Tactics series, I simply just think they wanted to try something new. If it does turn into a Tactics game, well in comparison to the Yakuza games, I still have 7 other Metal Slug games to play that I still simply enjoy (hell i still fucking love Yakuza 7 and it's change to being an RPG now)
Really though, this video is cool, i love Metal Slug, and after working a shitty shift and having to work Christmas Eve, this video was nice to see, ty
Last not, that subtle jab against Scott Pilgrim vs The World The Movie The Game, glad know as a fan of Beat Em Ups games, that game is absolute garbage, total overhyped dumpster fire and I hate anyone who hyped it up to be good, sorry

you should do it now. just create a throwaway youtube channel, and make your video.
100% it will suck, but you can take notes from your mistakes, and listen to the constructive feedback on the comments.
then you can make a new channel and post a new and improved version of your video.
      im speaking from experience.
although i never pursued it further than my 3rd video it was still very gratifying to finally put my plan into action. and i got to write that item off my bucket list.
it also made me appreciate youtubers a lot more, and not be too harsh criticizing their work.
my issue was my speaking cadence. it was just not up to par. and i really tried to make progess but from the first to the 3rd video there wasnt that much progress.
the feedback on the comments was surpisingly positive although very critical. i think they understood i was an absolute begginner. i think the feedback becomes harsher as you become better because people have higher expectations of your work.
      anyways, 10/10 would recommend,.

Just to clarify in Mexico we had cheap arcades (a cabinet with a Neo Geo emulator) and any local stote had a (what it was at the time) a 10 cents of a dollar per ingame token. Now it cost about a quarter of a dollar per token in certain areas. Its very very cheap to play and people still have a lot of them just around, if you want to buy one cabinet for your home, it costs you about a 100 dollars and you can program it to play all the NeoGeo library.

Sure the original gameplay is good, but without it's extremely good pixel art and animations, it would be not memorable at all, I just fell in love with those scenarios, characters and machines. Every game that embraces that and is not there just for the money is more than welcome.

The first Metal Slug will always be my favorite in the series and is one of my favorite 3 run n' gun games. I find the strictly militaristic theme and, as you pointed out, the stages that look like straight out of the war theater of the 2nd World more interesting then the later sci-fi and horror additions. Plus it doesn't take ages to take down bosses (and some regular enemies) as in the later games.

I do admit however that I was slightly annoyed at the hostility towards the upcoming tactics game (most likely because I always valued the pixel art and style on the same level as the gameplay) BUT I never gave much thought about how much I would want this same production level in a bonafide Metal Slug game and now I 100% want this. I've been in love with Metal Slug ever since, my right thumb still hurts from pressing the square button into oblivion and I would give away everything to experience each and (almost) every game for the first time out of many reasons, one of them being just how hilarious the game is.

Yeah I love metal slug since as kid and here in Brazil we love SNK and their characters too much. Now about why people receive the Metal Slug Tatics well I can think in some reasons first no one would trust SNK to do another Metal Slug after years they are finally getting their shit together in fighting games now and it would be in 3D that snk is still learning and that would cut half of the charm for me just look at the recent mobile game that tried and had some good animation but its not as charming,Second even if they would look up for another dev to do a normal metal slug who would do it and make it good?,Third I dont think SNK is paying them I find more easy Dotemu is paying SNK for the rights and paying for development so just for them trying to do something with the IP that was dead on console and IN FUCKING 2D SPRITES already makes me happy and if other games can have a tactics spin off why not Metal Slug.
Im not saying the game will be good just that Im glad and happy that someone is doing another game of the series on consoles and with 2D sprites,if people is happy or addicted in the mobile game why people cant be happy about a tactics game?
