Video 4 covering hesitation, misfire and engine codes on the 2004 Dodge Durango 4.7L
A few months ago the check engine light came on and the code was P0306 (misfire #6 cylinder). I let the vehicle sit for about a month thinking I had a fuel injector problem. However, I then found water in the spark plug/coil pack well of #6. I've been thinking for a month that I may have another warped head (it has happened to me before). Good news is its just water from the windshield coming in past the cowl and draining onto my coil packs. Bad news is, the best fix is about $160 here:

It’s kind of a long story but I didn’t read about the problem anywhere. I found it when I thought my heads were warped again because there was water sitting on top of the spark plugs. I just kind of backwards worked in my mind and figured when I saw the cowl was off the windshield and that’s when I realized the water was going down in there so I used the water hose and sure enough that’s what was causing the problem

Same exact problem here, the cowl they put on (brand new) doesn't fit snug to the window so there is a gap, the water runs directly on top of the engine and the ECU wires and plugs get soaked. My solution was to use clear silicone latex and just caulk the thing for a year long solution. It is better than chasing codes all year.

The early Ford Expeditions had a similar problem as this, except it was caused by an air conditioning hard line which ran over the top of the motor in a diagonal fashion, dripping water due to condensation onto the #5 or #6 coil pack I don't remember which. Of course, the dealer wanted like $75 for a new coil pack, until I discovered this problem and found out it was a design defect. So I ended up replacing he coil with an aftermarket one and then putting insulation around that metal A/C line which ran over the engine. Unfortunately, since the line was metal I couldn't just re-route it like a normal rubber hose.

I can't believe that there no knowledgeable (and honest) mechanics that would identify and fix this.
I have had milky engine oil issues for a while. My Durango 2006, V8 4.7l is very low miles 62,000 as of Sep 2023 😀. When I change the oil it remains clean if there is no rain. But as soon as it rains, pretty much the next day, the oil starts to get milky (color changes to tan) and the level starts to increase.
Three mechanics have said "Blown Head Gasket"... $3,700 job or new engine. However, one mechanic who does not do Head Gasket jobs told me "It seems just regular water, not the antifreeze.. water is getting inside, but do not know where from".
Then I saw a few videos and came across some that talked about the cowl leaks. So I verified and confirmed my car's cowl is loose, just like you showed.
First of all, the cowl leak could really cost you a large amount of $ if the mechanic "diagnoses it" as a blown head gasket and the work is done, but you could still have the same problem the next time it rains. This should be a recall from Chrysler.
I am changing the cowl.. We'll see if it fixes the issue.
    Thanks

I have a 2004 Durango with the 4.7 engine (179K) and it too had this problem. I think I've solved the water problem by sealing the cowl to the windshield and sealing all the holes. I've changed the coil paks, changed the plugs and changed the fuel injectors. It still give the code sometimes. I took it to a mechanic friend and it ran perfect going over and while I was there. I had to take him out and put it under a load to get it to throw the code. Today it ran rough from the startup till back home. It's so frustrating because it's not consistent. I've been on the Dodge Durango Forum but still no answer.
The engine does not smoke and uses no oil. Although it threw one P0300 all the rest have been only P0306.

William, thank you for sharing your experience! When I made this video I used a small rubber hose split on one side and slid onto the cowl to close the gap. Unfortunately, My 04 is currently sitting with a P0306 code and running rough. I’ve swapped the coil packs around (relatively new) with no change. I’ve swapped the throttle position sensor (multiple times). I haven’t changed my injectors, but it’s probably in my future. I’ve also read that the code can be caused by a malfunctioning o2 sensor. I might change those too. Here’s to owning a Durango 🙄

Dealing with the exact same issue right now. Just finally figured out what was happening after diagnosing it for a day. Was getting a cylinder 4 misfire. And random misfire codes popping up all of a sudden recently when it rained. Noticed that the cowl on mine doesn’t sit flush in the center and lets the water rush right in. Went and bought the upgraded cowl from the stealership today but after watching a few videos I’ve seen people install it and there’s a few improvements with it but it still seems like people are having issues with the gasket not sitting flush in the middle against the window.
What did you end up doing ? since i know this video is a few years old at this point.

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  Před 3 lety

I’ll be honest, I’ve sliced small rubber hose and installed it along the “gasket” edge to act as a filler. I’ve sealed the edge where the hose meets the windshield with black silicone caulk and I’ve even used dielectric grease in some of my connectors (tps to be exact) but I’m still fighting the issue in one way or another. As long as it’s dry it is fine, but now it seems when we drive through water standing on the roadway the tps goes out.
It’s one of the worlds greatest mysteries

Douglas White I think I actually sealed around the wiper holes too. Initially I thought that was where it was coming from. However, make sure you clean out the drain holes on the cowl because the water shouldn’t be able to build up on the cowl to the point where it overflows in through the wiper holes. Try running the water at the windshield using a garden hose and see if the cowl drains normally

I have had the same issue with my 04, I knew about it, but doesn't seem to be an issue when it rains, only when it goes through a car wash or large bodies of water when the water can splash up. When it starts acting funny, I just pull the coil pack and blow out the water with a long tube on my air compressor. That's a temp fix. Now when I go over hills the vehicle seems to loose speed and just doesn't have the power anymore...235k miles. My v6 Dodge caravan has more balls than this 4.7 does. It's mostly just a backup vehicle for my '11 durango. Think I just need to sell the pos and get a 5.7 since those plugs are angled different, unless there are issue like this with the 5.7 as well.

I have a issue with the serpentine belt on the 2004 dodge Durango 4.7. I replaced it. No squealing until I turn on the ac..... what did I miss here?

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  Před 4 lety +1

Was it squealing at all before you changed the belt? What caused you to change the belt?
I ask because if the bearings are going out on the ac it could be causing a drag on the belt and causing it to squeal and potentially fail...so if you changed the belt because of damage this could be your culprit.
But let’s start out simple first...it could just be a low quality belt and just squeals. You could try replacing the belt with a better quality one (especially if you had no squealing prior)
Second, you may need to replace the belt tensioner. If not putting the correct pressure on the belt, when you turn on the AC I causes the belt to spin around the compressor pulley.
If the belt and the tensioner are good then you may need to check the ac compressor/pulley.
      As a note,
My daughter had a similar issue on her Toyota and it turns out I didn’t tension the belt quite enough
None of this is a guaranteed fix. Just do your due diligence on troubleshooting and good luck!.

worst cowl design ever! I'm having the same problem and I see it as planned obsolescence by dodge
if the leak is real bad, you should look at replacing the intake seals so that water doesn't seap in and destrpy the motor. there's a great video of this on CZcams
in my case I had to buy a new cowl cause the old one was too brittle and damaged..but I also water proofed the area immediately to the right of the vent well on the passenger side and just left of the wiper bolt. there's a huge gap there that goes straight into the motor, again ridiculous design
the driver side is not as bad as it has the wiper motor mechanism
I used a 1/8 inch sheet of rubber and rubber washers around the wiper bolts..as some suggested, I also placed clear silicone on the part that sits on the windshield
another issue I had was with water coming into the door frame and finding our seatbelts soaked..I found out it was a plastic knob holding the top racks that had lost its seal. if you're having this problem, take your racks off and place a good amount of silicone around the base of this plastic piece of chrysler S.!

I realize your a southern fella But your going to have to help me to understand How your 'Wife" Let the Family Durango run "HOT" I've driven these Durango's in high heat in traffic with A/C on and it never came up past the normal operating temp like between 180 & 195/200 ish until the T-stat cycled these don't blow gaskets off till they are well above the 220 degree mark . Now if this was allowed to run HOT for extended period of time without concern well you get what you get or if the radiator was blocked or just poorly maintained ..But Bro your truck has Cowl drain's did you check them ? rain shower's don't get in plug holes BUT Dude I don't know what you do for a living but this term you used called Hydro-Lock Or Hydraulic is a term used in Drag racing when a cylinder fills with fluid and tosses the rod out the side of the block or lifts the entire blower manifold and all But that Hemi has about as much in common with your baby "Hemi" as Trump does with the truth NOTHING at all..It really sounds like you either parking your truck under tree's where a lot of debris has been allowed to get down into the cowl vents and clog the drains causing your water problem

Way to go - comparing engine troubles to Trump👍And talking down to someone for speaking differently than you. A man of tolerance you are!👌👌👌
