  • A True Scrappy Quilt is made with all different scraps of fabric and the fabrics don't need to match. You just need to make sure the scraps are all the same size. This free pattern you can keep sewing for as long as you like or finish it up quick.

Thank you for showing how to cut the scraps and construct the quilt. I made one with over 1000 pieces. I love it and it used up a lot of scraps that I wanted to put to good use. Everyone who sees the quilt likes the scrappy look.

I have learned so much from you! Thank you for your excellent educational videos! My friends give me their scraps. Wait til they see what i did with them!

Hi Phyllis.I’m a Phyllis too. Lol. This is a great video, it looks so eye catching and easy to make for a novice like me. And i just wanted to say HI to another who shares the same name, which means Green Leafy Branch. As an adult, i think :Cool name. Mom loved Phyllis Diller, and i got teased as a little kid but now most people younger than me don’t have a clue who she was. And it’s always fun when i meet another Phyllis. Have a beautiful day and be blessed.

I just found your channel, i just wanted to tell you I have taught my son how to sew, he always watched me sew at a young age. I had five children and three girls. I sewed a lot of shorts and t-shirts. I also taught sewing for a while. It turned out fine because my son showed his wife how to sew. So if they want to sew , let them.

I just finished the scrappy quilt top and I really love it. This from someone who doesn't really like scrappy quilts. I put a black border around it to frame it. I look at it on the design wall and it reminds me of a quilt my great-grandmother made out of our old clothes. Very fond memories. Thanks for the quilt demo.

l did it! First quilting project ever and only stroller-sized but it looks fantastic - from a distance..
All the fabrics were different weights and the stitching is far perfect but I learned a lot and enjoy every minute of it.
Plus the imminent great granddaughter gets a unique gift that reflects the conventional preference of her mother on the top (baby pinks and blues) but also dad's gothic aesthetic (Dia de Muertos) on the back.
So sincere thanks for your skill and generosity in sharing it.

I just spent hours cutting squares but now as I get scraps I will cut them down to size right away and add to my box. It was also fun going down memory lane on the many things I have sewn since getting my machine in November. It has been a lot but I have yet to do a quilt. I am officially inspired.

Hi, Laura, Great video! I'm quilting my scrappy quilt (my second quilt ever) now and am loving the fun of it. I cleaned up quite a bit of my leftovers and added in some plain white squares. I treated the white fabric to enable printing, then printed them with quotes from famous women. I call it my Wise Women's Words Quilt. All the squares are 2 1/5" finished; the quilt dimensions are 60" x 80". Thanks for the inspiration!

Thank you for your tutorial on this scrappy quilt. It is always difficult to use up the small pieces of fabric we generate when making quilts. I have used this method and have produced/gifted four of these quilts since the pandemic hit Canada in March 2020. It continues to be my "go to" for using up quilt scraps. All of the recipients are thrilled to receive these one of a kind quilts (I am working to finish #24 and #25 of my "Quilting in the Time of Covid" ongoing series). Stay safe, stay healthy.

After making masks fast and furiously to donate, I was very stressed. Wanted to sew, but not think. So I thought of your scrappy quilt. and got out my Accuquilt Go Big and cut hundreds of 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles and pieced them into a colorful 72" x 80" quilt. Is it a work of art? No! But it is colorful, cheerful and holds memories of many previous projects. And making it was very therapeutic. Also, when I laid out the first dozen blocks, I noticed that, like yours, the pattern didn't quite always work. Logic told me it should, and I figured out that if in each 8 patch block, the rectangles in the upper left quadrant are always either vertical or horizontal, then the pattern will run true throughout. (You provided a great fix for when this doesn't happen.) Thanks so much for this idea.

This quilt is sooo very pretty !!! Since I don't have a long - arm machine, I guess I'll just hafta put the quilting "lines" on each individual large square, then sew them together. That's another way the squares won't be "going" the same way. TY for sharing this pattern with us. I'm gonna be making one of these soon when I can ever get some thread and batting to make it with - I have so many scraps to use - up, now. Love your channel. 😻

I’m making one and sizing my strips 2.5 x4.5. I’ve been cutting my pieces a little large and then trimming each 2 unit square to 4.5” square, which works fine. And if one original piece is a little narrow I borrow some width from its mate so the total 4.5” is still possible. Only a whisker here and there doesn’t seem to show.
But I’m cutting my strips the hard way. I do like you’re method of alignment for cutting.
I laid mine out and thought it looked a bit toooo crazy, so I make alternate my blocks with navy blue 4.5” squares. I discovered that makes them pop by laying out the idea on my navy carpet!

My favorite quilt is Granny’s house dresses in a variation of this pattern. She did a block of three rectangles a bit narrower, each block included a piece of white sheet at one end. All of it is handsewn. Granny died in 1991.
