Conversational skills for kids with autism are on a very complex level that will take some time and practice. While many parents dream of the day that they can have full conversations with their kids, autism conversational skills need a ton of assessing and programming to excel. In this video I discuss some examples of how complex this skill really is, as well as provide some tips to start teaching conversational skills to children with autism. It’s also important to note that before a child can even start learning conversational skills, they would need to have mastered a number of other autism skills first.

Dr. Mary Barbera "fell" into the world of autism in 1999 when her firstborn son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism one day before his third birthday. In the last 2 decades, Mary went from almost nothing about autism to becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, writing a bestseller, The Verbal Behavior Approach (now translated into more than 10 languages) and obtaining a PhD. with an in-depth knowledge of some of the best ABA autism strategies. In 2015, Mary began her first online course on autism that has already been purchased from parents and professionals in more than 45 countries and now sells 3 courses online. With more than 2 decades in the world of autism, both as a parent and as a professional, Mary is in a unique position to help you, especially if you live or work with a child with autism who also has delays or language disorders. Its mission is to change things for 2 million children with autism (or signs of autism) by 2020 through online training and advocacy.

Hi!!! Is very interesting. My son has autism and he began talking when he was 5. He doesn't do a full conversation yet. If I ask him he tries to answer. But my question today is about his behavior he is not patient at all and right now is driving everybody crazy with his screaming. He screams all day long and I don't know what to do. Please if you know something that can help I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

the struggle i have with building conversational skills is that i don''t think he is motivated to have a conversation. it feels like 'what's the point, i want to go watch tv'. sometimes he stays and talks out of politeness, but the motivation factor confuses me. does he want to socilize or no? if not then why am i making him socialize with me?

That’s a though question. I’m assuming he has all the prerequisites in place - lots of INTRAVERBALs, Mands (including where and what’s)
I would start with his MANDING! Tell him he can’t have something.
Then prompt him to ask “Why”. Then respond by saying because you haven’t finished your work. Hopefully he will then finish his work and then he Mands again and you give him that IPad or whatever it is!
Remember he must want something- then contrive it so he has to ask Why! There are tons of ways to do it - good luck 😊

@@theademerckxfiles9967 it's been two years and I just saw your message. How very useful and kind of you to respond with a real life example. He still doesn't care to ask questions. It's almost like he doesn't care for answers. He never ever asks why. He sometimes asks where, what, who, but never why not when. He has absolutely no concept of time. I keep working with him every day, but the results are so limited. Thank you immensely for your answer. I'm just shocked that there are people like you out there who would take the time to respond. Thank you.

Micah is 3.5 years. He doesn't converse. He asks, "What's that?" rather slurred. He makes what sounds like sentences in private play. Speaks individual words. He spins things. He doesn't like to chew food. His mother feeds him and uses a blended cooked food she makes. He is not potty trained. He lines up his hot wheels. He can't be still or doesn't like to be read to. He loves Chiu (sp) DVD cartoons and DVD movies called "Color City" (about animated crayons) and "Garfield" (the cat movie), and "Dave and Ava." He sounds out blended sounds, abc's, aeiou vowels, and sings in tune. He jabbers constantly with sounds, explores, and loves to wrestle and play fight...but it is hard to get his attention. I am 63 and my wife 40. We don't know what to do. He is happy but it is hard to get him to take direction and he will resist us.
