Autism and Picky Eating: 7 Tips to Solve Feeding Problems
Dr. Mary Barbera discusses 7 tips to solve feeding problems in young children who are picky eaters.
💻 Free workshop to help young children increase talking, decrease tantrums, and improve picky eating, sleeping, potty training and more: bit.ly/3GZjn7m
Picky eating, especially for those with autism or speech delays can be caused by a number of factors, or a combination of these factors. Today, I will go over some assessments you can do to help identify what is causing picky eating for your child with autism and how to get started.
There is a significant link between picky eating and autism, with research indicating that extreme picky eating is much more common in children with autism compared to their typically developing peers.
A study by Mays and Zikgraf in 2019 found that atypical eating behaviors, such as severely limited food preferences and refusal of different textured foods, occur in about 70% of children with autism-15 times more frequently than in typically developing children.

    My daughter hit puberty around age 9 and went very aggressive. Would lose control, try and hit us, smash objects she knew were dear to us etc. Wouldn’t go to bed, would follow us around the house demanding answers to her questions. Very draining. We started off taking the high road I.e not fighting back, trying to reason with her. But she never wanted to reason, she wanted to argue. This went on till she was 11 or 6th grade when she was getting quite strong. One night she refused to go to bed and staged one of her sit ins in our bedroom until her demands were met. I just thought, no, you don’t have the power here, and man handled her into her room. She tried coming out and I would put her back in. This carried on for an hour until we were both pretty exhausted and it was heart wrenching, to the point where she did give up, and hasn’t tried pulling that again. Then she went to high school and the hormones calmed down a bit and she’s relatively normal and lovely now! Her height accelerated over that 9-11 age so I knew it was hormonal, and she’s stopped growing now. But it was a really, really dark time for our family for two years. You just never knew when the next explosion was round the corner.

    I have a 2 year old son. The only food I can reliably get him to eat is corn. Specifically cream corn. I can sometimes get him to eat other foods but most of the time the only time I can get him to eat anything is if it's got corn with it. He will sometimes eat steak fingers, or chicken nuggets. He won't eat any other type of vegetable and sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy because it doesn't matter how much time I put into making him food that he has eaten without fail in the past, it seems like he's only willing to eat corn. Obviously he'll also eat chips but that isn't so much an actual food. We had a doctor's appointment today and he's 2 years old at 27 pounds, and more or less 2 and a half 3 ft tall.

    Its when one part of the brain is not developed as much as the other. So the brain rewrites its self to survive. The brain needs to be equally developed before the child starts using diffrent parts of the brain for diffrent things or the child brain will be written is self wrong. Mixed signals all over the place. Its something mri should find after a few month old. So MRI scans should be required. The under developed parts stimulated to grow equaly with implats or other.

    It usual happens when one side of the brain is more deveploped then the over at birth. Toddlers use both sides of the brain then the brain starts breaking up into sectors. So at yearly development the brain is trying to survive. Has to configure its self. The base traits show fom the dna. If the brain sides do develope equally later on. You will get a very smart child based on IQ level. If they never are equally developed you will have issues. Lost of thought, memory loss, memory is accessable then not at times and etc. It effects alot of things.

  • @robertolson7304
    @robertolson7304 Před 3 dny

    IQ is diffrent in every kid. I would say he or she is hyper. They are working with numbers and letters because its a dna response. Not learning. They have the drive to learn because its a survial trait in our dna. Some animals walk right out of birth. Did they learn it. No. Its programed in the dna. So we are seeing a DNA response displayed that we all have. Normally people shadow it by building up social communication. These kids have no social communication. So you see the dna response to learning.

Before he started saying his first words, he was trying to say the letters when reading an ABC book. His speech therapist is the one who pointed it out to me. Once she pointed it out, I was able to notice it. He had an abc puzzle and some magnetic letters. Somewhere between 18 months and 2yrs old he would line them up in order.

    Headbanging is not serious take that from my parents, my mom’s and nurse I told her that I slam my head all the time And felt dizzy afterwards now that I am an adult and not ashamed of it anymore Because it should be something that you would think people would be taking seriously like you slammed your head a lot as a child. Maybe we should get your brain scan to make sure there’s nothing wrong with your brain no No, no no no no that is not how it works. That is not how the world works. The world works like this you go in with issues you tell your doctor you slam your head of a child they will drop you off and bipolar medication without a psychologist or psychiatrist, or a psychotherapist. And tell you that you have to take it every single day on the exact minute and if you miss it by a minute or two, you might as well just stop taking it all together Or maybe it’s not a brain chemical imbalance maybe I have fucking brain lesions that are caused by multiple concussions Like what do I have to do to get my doctor to take my concerns seriously I told him I slammed my self against walls concrete floors, math textbooks to the point of being dizzy and blocking out and that doesn’t even concerned them Even though every time my head banging happened, it was because I was extremely frustrated and had no other way to show my emotions so physical pain was the only way to stop the overwhelming sensation of emotions I would hit myself until I was busy and forgot why I was so emotional

    When I was a young child, I used to slam my head all the time by the time I was in adult and was finally brave enough to tell people in my doctors that I slam my head a lot to the point where I was dizzy You would think they would be concerned No, it doesn’t matter that my brain suffered multiple concussions level traumas as a child I could explain my behaviour of anxiety, depression, and erratic behaviour But who cares right who cares about actually, checking to see if 26 year old has brain lesions that I’ve been growing since they were eight We’re just gonna wait until I am 30 or 40 and they’ve become so large that I can’t walk or talk Anymore Because every child has about three or four concussions a month
