    It is very important that your child or client is able to comprehend your language, at least to some extent. Being able to comprehend language will help them follow directions, and let them know what is wanted from them. So that’s why today’s episode will focus on how to build receptive language abilities; how to assess comprehension; when to use visuals, and more!
    For example, visuals are a great way to teach anybody a new word; as a matter of fact, most people learn best by using visuals. But if you don’t know when it’s appropriate to use visuals and when it isn’t, then your child can become dependent upon them and won’t actually recognize the word.
    In today’s video you’ll learn:
    ✔️ Why assessing and teaching receptive language to children or people with autism is more important than teaching them expressive language skills.
    ✔️ How to assess between a language comprehension issue or a receptive language issue.
    ✔️ Ways to make assessments fun and avoid problem behaviors during assessment.
    ✔️ Why it’s important to plan for reinforcement and what kind of materials will be used to teach direction following.
    ✔️ When to pull in visuals to teach and fade out on prompts.

    Thank you for doing this. I’m a mom of a beautiful 20 year old young man. Daniel is nonverbal yet very intelligent considering his disadvantages. We are working on comprehension skills. It is great to get pointers and I’m blessed to have a great teacher who shared you with our family. It is bitter sweet watching these videos. I wonder sometimes if I’m the only one.

    I have a 30 months old boy who says agua (water in Spanish) when he wants water. He also say yes and no in Swedish. And he has a couple of pop up words. He has grown up in a multilingual household: Swedish, Spanish and English. We were encouraged to do so. We spoke to him in just Swedish and Spanish, and my husband and I speak in English and thought our son was not going to understand it anyway. One day way before he was 1 year old I was telling his dad in English how naughty our son had been during the day without laughing or showing emotion and our son just started to laugh as I was telling the story to his dad. Since then I started to test if he understood 3 languages, so one day I would say food is ready in one language and another day in a different language. Turns out our boy does understand 3 languages. But he doesn’t speak as he should. He doesn’t point as he should, he usually stretches towards what he wants or looks at it or stands where things are. He knows where everything is. He has great motor skills, loves running, climbing, playing piano, and building with Lego (it seems he is advanced), he kicks balls and throws them, he can also draw but is not interested in it. He loves cars, trucks, trains, etc, he’s quite messy, doesn’t line things up. He smiles if you smile at him, he notices other children and he’s always the first one trying to make contact with them, he’s not shy at all. But if a child doesn’t want to play with him he plays by himself. He loves gymnastics, he can dance a bit. He does show empathy and he’s very sweet with babies. Likes to look at them and tries to make them smile. He has good eye contact in general. The big issue with him is the partial pointing and little verbal communication. He also shows some lack of interest in what anyone tries to show him or teach him. I’m worried he’s on the spectrum and I brought this up when he was 1 year and a half. Pediatrician expert in autism said after meeting him that his lack of interest could be just him choosing to ignore and part of his personality and that he’s advanced in other areas. She said he could be gifted because he shows signs of it. We were sent to a speech therapist in case he doesn’t start speaking and courses about how to communicate with autistic children. There are late talkers on my husband’s side and he is a very bright mathematician, programmer, engineer. Anyway, I’m so worried that we recently started to speak in just one language at home. I hope he turns out to be one of those kids that starts speaking one day just like that since so many people have told me that’s probably the case. Thanks for your content.

    Thank you so much, this was a great podcast. My 26 month old grandson, has no legible words, doesn't seem to understand basic instructions and seem aloof to everybody around him. We have never seen him throw a temper tantrum and is a very focused, calm, quiet child when he plays. He does not interact with other adults or children. My daughter-in law managed to get him assessed , privately yesterday. She obviously didn't get any diagnosis as he is very young. She is very determined to get him the help that he needs.

    She cryiiing for it hurts alot .as a parent thank u for doing this there just as anyone else just special need structure and scheduling. Routine.to reinforce and also how to go about certain punishments just like any other child it just may take more than one or two times to tell an autistic child or an adult repeatedly so they get it and they understand.

    I lived in mexico for a while 3 yrs she actually picked up the language faster than I did and was able to comprehend with them in Mexico weather than she did in the United States where from the United States she's made a lot of friends there and help them actually learn English to her level her brain functions at an eight year old and they took interest in it and they also helped her with her Spanish and she became had more friends over there that she actually has had here in the United States and she still stuck on the 4th grade friend she had in the United States it's important that they keep in communication for any child or adult with autism so they understand more they use sign language and different tactics of their own and you have to learn to pay attention to what they're trying to express and not ignore it and then that's how the parent learns as well

    Great video. my daughter was born prematurely she’s now 12 months but she isn’t talking nor does she make sounds a lot she doesn’t really repeat anything I try teaching her should I be worried? Or keep watching out I’m noticing that she’s not really interested in much.. she loves when you sing to her

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  Před 4 lety +1

      At only 12 months it is quite young to know for sure but if she doesn't imitate or make sounds that may be concerning. That is great you have something she likes you to do! My toddler course may help you to increase her language skills www.marybarbera.com/quiz . It may also be best to get a full evaluation from an early intervention team. In north america these are frequently free screenings.
