  • Back into GMRS with the most requested part 3, I have some new radios to show and antennas to pair with them. The GMRS linking project has increased the distance of GMRS by many miles, states away in fact. Keep watching for the future videos to follow this week.

I've been a ham for 20 years now. I thought about GMRS but where I live, all the repeaters are member only and the owners will not accept requests to use them, are off line etc. So, i'll have to stick with what I have available to me. P.S I feel the same, "KEEP IT RF" There is no challenge in using network stuff like Zello, Echolink. I studied for a reason and enjoy using my brain!

Not everyone has the time for ham and are specifically looking for a practical communications option that is simple.

Midland is to thank for bringing mobiles to the market and promoting GMRS to the 4x4 crowd about 4 years ago. There was a couple of handhelds that showed up; Btech and Wouxun. Then early last year radio in general took off followed by the election chaos fueling the fire. A couple of radio retailers saw the demand and have brought turn-key radios to the market and its rolling along.

Part 95 radios have been around for years. Midland did not come up with it even though they did have better radio several years earlier certified for FCC Part 95. The main thing I always heard for years about anyone using it was they couldn't justify the cost .
People refused to get licensed. GMRS is nothing new and has been around for many years but noone wanted to invest in it or see what it was about. I have no clue why the sudden interest but at least people are beginning to get licensed and use it.

CB was my gateway drug back in the late 80s then I got licensed (Ham) in '91. GMRS is a VERY capable service and am actually coming up on a GMRS license renewal already (have the 5-yr until we renew).

I like the fact all you to do for a GMRS license is signup and pay the fee. Then couple days later you will have your GMRS call sign and you can start talking legally on GMRS frequencies.
I just wish more people would get their GMRS license. In my state there is only like 2800 people with a active GMRS license. While in my state there is like 6500 people that has a active HAM amateur license.

@@davidbrock4104 The UHF cb he’s a good service but I think America’s idea of GMRS it’s better because you were allowed 50w and repeaters aren’t open to abuse as much because you have to have a license and a callsign even though there are regulations on them uhf cb in Australia they don’t get in forced At least if you pay for all License and you complain you have a A foot to stand on are you a Uhf CB system is class license which means anybody can buy the radio no questions asked and get on air I understand that in this us anybody can buy a GMRS radio but you need to transmit unlike here on uhf cb 73 Tom VK3FTOM

I do not believe in serious nets for GMRS nor do I like the idea of linking repeaters. We have ham for that. GMRS is an extension of the family radio service and is meant to be non-formal for personal use only. I like not having to use ham codes and jargon on GMRS and don't want it spoiled with that. Many people want to have good local coverage in their town and I believe linking is going to ruin that. There are already too few repeater channels and linking will needlessly tie them up even further.

I have a GMRS repeater. I would like to link it to other similar units. What interface is in common use and what is the computer link. Who is the contact for this link. I can hear the Chicago area linked repeaters from MI bit an unable to talk in to them as I do not have the correct PL tone. What is the tone and who is the contact for this link?? Seems no one provides any info for these links.
