- Our guest this week has one of the best NBA stories this season. He’s Utah Jazz star and Most Improved Player candidate, Lauri Markkanen. The episode begins with JJ Redick and Tommy Alter’s discussion about The Utah Jazz’s real changes to make the playoffs this season. Then we immediately get into our interview with Lauri. Topics include: A story about Lauri calling Brian Scalabrine to ask if he could wear his number with The Chicago Bulls, Lauri’s influences growing up and what his competition was like in Finland, adjusting to The NBA, playing against 17 year old Luka Doncic in The EuroLeague, how he’s been able to elevate his play on The Utah Jazz and whether the team feels as though they’re being underestimated, playing with noted nice guy, Mike Conley, his experience playing for The Cleveland Cavaliers and The Chicago Bulls, being involved in the Jimmy Butler trade, Lauri shares a story from the tumultuous Jim Boylen era of The Chicago Bulls, how Lauri has adjusted to the business side of professional sports, his thoughts on so many international MVP level players such as Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and so much more.

Im so proud of lauri as a finn🇫🇮 Thank you JJ for this pod!
Someone who watches every bull's game: Lavine and Coby would never pass Lauri the ball even if he was open. Lauri had such a promising rookie season. Then Lavine came in...... Now he actually gets the ball and mike Conley is having career high in assists bc he actually knows how to play with others.
Okay 😮😮😮😮😢😮😮
😮😢
😢
😮
Proud of lauri and happy I got to watch the first 4 years of his career in Chicago and can’t wait to see where it goes
If he can stay healthy and the Jazz can stay relevant. He's an All-Star this year in Salt Lake. I will say he needs more consistent touches. He was 5-7 halfway through the 4th quarter last night. That's just not enough for how good and efficient he has been.
Facts the Jazz gotta get the ball to Lauri more especially now that teams have adjusted to them more
Clarkson is a huge reason why that is tbh. He’s highkey a nut
need to force it to him and get plays called at Karl Malone levels.
he’s almost there with FG attempts but getting to the line 10x will be difficult.
Good to hear Lauri, he's been phenomenal this year so happy for him
Qq
So happy to have him in Utah, absolutely loved here
If Jazz still in the 6-8 spot before the selection, Lauri's going to be an All Star .
Especialy since it is in Utah this year
Most improved
i think he can still make it if they are in a play in position
Not only all star nod possibly maybe MIP and/or 2nd/3rd team all NBA Lauri been chefing🧑🏽🍳🕺🏾

Lauri is such a great guy. You guys should interview coach Will Hardy next!
My Christmas started early; I find out my Markkanen Jazz jersey is being delivered tomorrow after 6 weeks of waiting AND this gem drops on the same day! JJ is a great interviewer.
did you get purple 90 ‘s joint?
As a bulls fan, couldn’t be happier for lauri, he got screwed over by injuries and Jim Boylen while he was with us. Definitely miss him now with how bleak our future looks.
The Finnisher! So cool to see someone from Finland succeeding in the NBA, never thought I'd see it
Lauri is a beast!! Always a fan
Lauri been my dawg since day1🐐🐐
Lauri's English skills are right up there with Finland's another national pride Jesse Puljujärvi!
Another great interview that the people of the Basketball world have been waiting for! Can't wait to watch this ❤️🔥
It's amazing to see Lauri blossoming into a star like this!
I'm a fan of Lauri. I wanted him on the Phoenix Suns he's doing good in Utah.

Lauri always was going to be good he just needed to become the main go to for a team
Im so happy for him and especially to have witnessed him playing international ball this off season and him getting a chance to translate a similar game style to nba is amazing. The potential has always been there, i remember his first international games and first summer league games and now seeing this makes me really proud. Honest first reaction i had to hearing him getting traded to Jazz was dissapointment since i wasnt familiar with the org or all the trade pieces and coaching change they got. Since he had a improvement and a good young team with high playoff potential in Cleveland. I first thought after the trade happened that he would get traded at the trade deadline this season for sure, but not anymore. Ever since i saw the first games he had with Jazz and the chemistry of the team i thought damn this was a blessing in disguise. Go Jazz!
always good to have new intererview
Utah fans are probably so relieved they ended up w/ Lauri and not RJ.
indeed. And Sexton too if we can figure out how to use him lol (he has no court vision, its why Cleveland bailed on him).
@@danr154 Sexton is great in that 6th man of the year type of role. A real bucket getter off the bench.
As a suns fan I knew he was going to say that game!!! He balled man I was so impressed
I've been following Lauri since he got drafted (Bulls fan). I always thought he was capable of more but I felt like he never got the chance to shine fully.
Zach LaVine and Jim Boylen had that effect on a few players
Damn I miss this dude in Cleveland. Mitchell was worth it, but dude was a GREAT fit for us.
Mitchell went to Epstein's island. So did Gobert
@@TheMasterpiecePD bad troll is bad...
@@dearmas9068 Google it, caveman
Isn’t a good fit in Cleveland, Mitchell is definitely the better move
Lauri's emergence was inevitable.
I noticed that he was really good at Eurobasket and thought that it was because he was a first option for Finland. But then I thought, Utah's coaching staff definitely saw this and his confidence has to be through the roof. It's interesting that my suspicion has proven correct...
Thank you for this episode! You earned a sub👍
That van gundy quote I relistened to at least 8 times
Good timing guys, solid idea for a guest
great to see him on this show. I didn't know him very well, often times with Euro players in the NBA we just don't see as much of their personal side, and he seems really cool. Great interview, great guest.
cleveland loves you lauri! happy for you and collin
Proud of Lauri his so humble guy, keep it up Lauri & Godbless!🙏🏻🥰
Right on time for my drive to work
Super funny to me, those people watching this saying "he's dumb, or slow of speech". . .
You do realize English is his 2nd language?(or 3rd who knows how many languages he speaks) he has to translate everything JJ/Tommy are saying, then form his thoughts, then say it back in English. . .Of course he's going to keep it simple.
I won’t lie, watched him against warriors, he’s cold🥶
Another great one cheers JJ & Tommy - This has definitely been Lauri's coming out season so it's great to hear from the man himself on his journey & how he's got to this point. Gotta respect it, think he's got a lot of new fans this year seeing him play on the Jazz...Now do they tank for Wemby? ;) Or does Lauri & the Jazz make a run to stay in the playoffs. Keen to find out
FINNISHER!!!! 🇫🇮🏆
Most improved gonna be a good one this year
These interviews always go by so fast
Good stuff!
Love Lauri! Go Jazz!
What an awesome interview so far, I am happy Lauri was able to use Eurobasket as a trampoline to his career year. It is a no brainer, he can practice patriotism and basketball at the same time.
Great episode
dude i didn’t realize he was 7ft, he moves so well and his shot is so smooth
bangs on a lot 7fters
Whoa Jj the basketball Gods won’t let that Scal dis respect go BIG PROPS to Lauri for asking the GOAT for his permission
Cavs fans knew he was good but not this good lol I’m happy for him but his shooting length and versatility on both ends would fit perfectly with our current group.
Lauri Legend... to b..
Giving the White Mamba his flowers I already like this guy
Great intervju wihh Lauri. Thank you.
The spanoulis story is absolutely true!
Lauri on Goat. Niin symppis
certified old man and the three classic
JJ you didn’t have to do scal like that 😂😂😂😂😂😂
🔥🔥
Even if jazz going up and down but mostly down after next week
They are still passing the expectations at this point
Hes the first person that i actually predicted exactly how he sounded like
JJ, make an interview this season with Porzingis, please!
🐻⬇️ Lauri!
@JJ Redick where did you get your hat in this podcast episode?
went to Jazz @ Kings this year and Lauri looked like prime lebron. Very entertaining player to watch!
Need a time stamp guy!
ayyyyyyyyy get in
Hi JJ 👋🏼
Can we do requests here? Gotta get Goran Dragic on the pod
JJ's podcast is the best NBA podcast by far. One question I would have liked to hear Lauri answer: the Jazz are an impressive 10 and 7 against the top third of the league, and maybe an even more impressive 6 and 2 in close games (3 points or fewer, and all overtime games), but a lackluster 7 and 9 against the middle and bottom thirds of the league. The first two numbers (wins against the top third, wins in close games) are usually good predictors of postseason success, but what's with the let down games? Does Lauri feel the Jazz "play down to their competition." Does he think there's anything they can do to beat down the bottom feeder teams the way they should?
The way JJ says “Appreciate” will forever bug me. The CIATE part
the era of the unicorn is upon us
Can y'all get Manu on? You'd have so much to talk about and I would personally love it. Ps- I live in Spokane and still pulled for you, so you owe me. Lol
Lauri is the best young big in NBA. All-Star quality.
JJ when are you gonna have Book on this pod
I really wish the Bulls never traded him 😩
Now 3s are starting to go in.... I think when Conley is back and they can improve pick and roll...then Lauri can easily average 25-26 points. If one looks on stats.... Lauri is pretty much shooting less per game than anyone above him. Just to put the point average into perspective. Also he is team first player. He will not go into game making sure he will get his stats. Sometimes game just dont go his direction specially with the way Jazz plays. Lets hope he stays healthy and lets hope Jazz will keep surprising!
Clarkson is taking way too many shots for a player of his caliber and sometimes just freezes Lauri off. It's pretty frustrating to watch at times.
a couple more attempts but the leap will come if he can get to the line 8X +
he would be nutty, MVP level
Cleveland should’ve never traded him
Someone who watches every bull's game: Lavine and Coby would never pass Lauri the ball even if he was open. Lauri had such a promising rookie season. Then Lavine came in...... Now he actually gets the ball and mike Conley is having career high in assists bc he actually knows how to play with others.
how many times can you copy and paste this?
@@mzilber1 glad you search for it😉
@Cam lmao you madd????
At least someone had the decency to ask the White Mamba for permission to wear his jersey number
I always felt the Bulls gave up on him too quickly. Glad to see he's finally fulfilling the potential i saw as a rookie
Basket the 3rd most popular sport in Finland? I suggest we let cross country and skijumping step in front of basket, pushing it down to 5th at the best
not sure on ski jumping but cross country skiing 100%
According to amount of registered players, basketball is in 5th place with 25k registered players. 1st place Football ( yea, yea, soccer - you hand egg lovers!) w/ 700k, ice hockey 2nd w/ 500k.. then floorball 3rd and volleyball 4th.
gotta get a josh giddey intervied
Some thoughts from a fellow Finn:
Firstly: even if we are very proud of Lauri, there is no way basketball is second most popular sport in Finland after soccer! Icehockey is the most popular to watch (although there are more people playing soccer). I could argue on popularity for some other sports too like rally/motorsports or floorball or our version of baseball or wintersports like ski jumping etc. but it's hard to say where exactly basketball ranks among those.
Secondly: Stereotypically Finns are famous for taking their time to warm up to new people but when Finn makes a friend, it's friend for life. So, I could really feel for Lauri when he talked about all his friends being traded away. So much effort "wasted" trying to make a team/city a home and then you need to start again making new friendships. Also lot of friends you need to stay in touch around the USA or world even 😃
Luka Talk @12:35
It's amazing that Lauri had so little help from staff (in Chicago) and had to struggle all by himself and construct a better playing method for himself!
Laurrrrriiiiii
Lauri is in my top 3 Finns:
1.Ovucado
2.Aki
3.Lauri*
He’s handsome
I never knew Lauri was pronounced Lowry .. like Mike Lowry or Kyle Lowry
So glad people are finally getting that. He ins NOT "Laurie".
Lauri Legend
Lauri loved you playing for the land last year keep eating boa

“Apprishiate It”
Hey JJ
Lauri Bird

Gar/pax hoiberg/boylan ruined sooo many years of Chicago Bulls basketball... If they brought del negro it woulda been better for everyone. I'm so happy Laurie, Jimmy, D. Rose, & so many others got to play well elsewhere before their careers fell apart
He reminds me of gallinari 2.0
The Lakers are not the 12th best team. They’re not great but they also like last year have not had most of their team together already this season

yooooooooooooooooo
on a spot-reaction note, what exactly has Utah ever had to do with "Jazz"? Not sure why it's taken me so long to see that glaring oddity.
It was once new orleans jazz when pistol pete played
Los Angeles Lakers are from Minneapolis and the Los Angeles Clippers are from San Diego. Many teams retained their name after moving to another city, the Jazz being one of them.
