Nice to see your back Edd, when i was a van driver [now mobile cranes] i HATED THE over priced Sprinter my boss at the time bought a new VW LT35 extra LWB which was MY VAN . I used to drive upto Longbridge [ROVER] and over to Land Rover Solihull and Loved that van So comfortable good on fuel [not that i payed] but it NEVER let me down. I put 167,000 on the clock in 2 years right up until the GREEDY managers BROKE the back of Rover and i lost my job of 13 years ,i also drove Lorries at the time. Since then i have been an VW/Audi guy all the way.

Also worth mentioning that whilst the Crafter is no longer merely a rebadged Sprinter, you can get the new Crafter with MAN badges.

Yay Ed's back. Sweet
I've not had a new Crafter yet, but I got a new sprinter with 19 miles on the clock. By 700 miles, it was fucked. Serious loss of power (40mph max) and heavy vibration. Don't know the exact cause, but defo either clutch or gearbox issues. It got replaced with a brand new VW Transporter. What a fantastic little van. Superb to drive and made a good noise. It was like a little angry jack russell 😃
Something good to add is how the vans fair in terms of theft. I have heard some horror stories of brand new vans only taking minutes to break into. Great review Edd will definitely watch more.
Any van with inside door release handle can be open in under a minute with a drill and high quality bit to drill through the plate.

Very enjoyable review Ed. Any chance of reviewing the latest Transit? My own experience of driving both vans empty was that the Transit was more compliant over bumps and had lower noise levels; in the Crafter the bulkhead seems to "ring". I agree with you that the Crafter's steering is better weighted. Obviously the Crafter, like the Sprinter, does have more kudos which is important to us motorhome converters! Looking forward to hearing your views.
Who would you trust to give an honest opinion on a motor...China or Brewer, I know who I'd trust. Nice to see you Edd, enjoyed the review...more please!

Edd please answer the question...which is better in a van, fwd or rwd. Not only dynamically because I would pick rwd all day long but mechanically as well. Thx.

Thanks Ed for this down to earth honest personable information on vans which I am using as a reference to make choices.
Before I watched this I wasted an hour watching the “new” and not now very good Top Gear because I thought the program was showing a tribute to Sabine Schmitt.
It made me realise how much better Ed China would be at presenting compared to the current Top Gear lot.

Great review , I had this same model on hire , would agree with most of it however I found fuel consumption very disappointing compared to its rivals.
It doesn't matter what vehicle edd drives, the steering wheel and controls always look tiny! Not in the market for a van I only rent one from time to time, but these reviews are great.
We have the MAN equivalent of this at work. Absolutely fantastic van. Good power, comfortable as a car and the 8-speed auto box is a gem. Far cry from a smiley-front Transit or a Talbot Express

Glad to see edd back! Question tho would vw consider building a Crafter 6 or 8 seater mpv swb, modern mpvs are to cramped, ceilings to low and the transporter is too tight for the driver . I'm 6 foot 4 and my knees are wedged up against the dash.

We have fourty vans in the fleet at work. The Crafter is by far and away the one that breaks down the most. If I had the choice I would not get one.
Be thankful that the firm didn't buy the VW Sprinters!

Did I see that right?! £52,181 for a van? That's absolutely ridiculous. You could have a 19 plate BMW 8 series for that money. 51k for a van is insane, what makes vw think that people who are looking for a van, are going to spend 51k? just buy 10 transporters.
