    • @gavjlewis
      @gavjlewis Před 2 měsíci +7

      MG are aware of this issue. The Italian press moaned about it last week. One said it appears the internal seat frame is actually a 60/40 split that has been made into a single bench. You will see @5:03 the single seat support. This would need modifying so it has two supports (one for each seat). It's not yet clear if that can be a dealer retrofit or it will be a factory fit only.
      So if looking to buy them I would suggest hanging fire to see what happens if a split seat is important to you.

      @@lloydh.3771 The EU hasn't publicly decided if Chinese cars are getting excess subsidy....based on their recent report, it looks like they haven't found anything other than Chinese wages being cheaper, their factories being more efficient and their market being more price competitive/cut throat
      As for tariffs, both the UK and the EU currently just have the standard 10% tariff on Chinese imports. The EU is currently in the process of deciding what tariff to implement although based on that report, it sounds like they're finding even a 50% tariff won't make European cars price competitive, because the Chinese brands have so much margin to play with. It also will annoy a lot of the major European brands who import a lot of cars from China (Renault, BMW, Mini, Mercedes)

      The problem is that any problems with the car after that and I can promise you that'll be a convenient warranty "out" for the dealers. One possible way around that is to get the dealership to fit it or just get a reputable firm to do it and then you're in a good position to argue.

    I think I'll wait for the manual. The present model MG3 Excite is expensive to tax, but at under £14k is attractive if, like me, you're not into all the needless extras that come with lots of cars. A seven year warranty does give reassurance and, given my annual mileage is about 4 thousand miles, when I sell it on it'll be low mileage and a bit of warranty left over.

      Yeah, I ended up ordering one. Drove nicely and didn't feel anywhere near as cheap as I thought it would. Everything you touch feels decent. Acceleration is more than quick enough too. The Polo Blue GT was one of very few small cars that mixed efficiency with good performance. Obviously now there is no replacement. But your car as a 5dr DSG car would have cost over £19k back then and just with inflation would cost £25.5k today so for MG to offer something like this in 2024 for only £18.5k is quite good. Back in 2014 pricing that's less than £14k.

    Thanks for an articulate review. The MG3 display is a straight borrowing from the more expensive MG 4 and 5 models, so a good deal if you are lucky with the Russian roulette process of left-hand touch screen operation. More switches, please! I wonder how boxey it sounds, especially at 60-70 on the motorway. Three speed gearing seems a major cost reducing measure. I have a second generation MG5 which has had major component failure and the driver's door rubber seal is disintegrating after 15 months. So, build quality with tge MG3 will be a concern.

    What I'd expect to see is that driving in congested London, the MG3 will have way superior fuel economy on account of its much bigger battery & electric motors. However on long motorway runs, the reverse will be true on account of the Swift's far lower weight (950 kg vs 1300 kg).
    If I'm honest, I'd probably buy the MG3 on account if its lower base price & no add-on cost auto box. However the bulk of my driving is tootling up & down the M3 which favours the Swift. It's a dilemma!

That the reviewer says the manufacturer claims over 60mpg, but they’ve only seen 2/3 of that, to 3/4 in their driving, and we don’t even flinch. None of us think ‘how dishonest!’. We literally have been conditioned to take the ‘urban’ fuel economy, the worst figure presented by the tests, as the best we likely will achieve almost regardless of how we drive. That’s what I find extraordinary. If it takes a ‘fudge factor’ of knocking 30% off the figures found, then I wish the official testing would simply apply that. Save me working it out. Take care all.

    As far as I can tell the MG3 uses a 3-Speed torque converter, likely using 3 large ratios with the EV motor to assist.
    The Clio on the other hand has an automated clutch-less dog-box with a second electric motor for synchronisation. It works similar to a high-low range splitter and gives the car a choice of 15 different gear ratios + reverse.

With a hybrid, the battery & electric motor can be employed to 'fill the gaps' in the torque delivery curve so you need less gears. That would make sense if MG was price competitive in China. In reality they are not really. Compared to other brands in China, MG struggles to compete on price and this includes even Western brands. For example, the VW whose id3 undercuts the MG4 in China even though the ID3 is £10,000 more expensive in Europe.
      The reason they are cheap is because - compared to Europe - Chinese labour is cheap, Chinese factories are often new/efficient and Chinese materials/parts can be bought cheaply.
