    As a previous owner of 2 Goldwings, 3 Burgman’s, 919 Honda Hornet, a Reflex, a couple of Kymco’s and my present Honda Silverwing; I must say the Silverwing is my favorite. Mine is an old gal, 2003 with 46k but looks brand new and runs like a top. It’s been the most reliable and has taken my wife and I over Mt. Mitchell on the BRP. I had thought about selling it but when fuel topped $4 gallon, I decided to put it back into service as a daily driver. From my experience, the SW is the Swiss Army knife of scooters as a do all for urban and touring. I don’t tour like I used to but I live out in the country and regularly use state highways that run 75-80mph. When I rode smaller scooters I had to move to the shoulder to let the cars pass. Now I can safely keep up with traffic.

    Great shootout guys! I've owned motorcycles up to 1500 & 1800cc Goldwings over the decades and downsized to a 1996 Helix 250cc 2 years ago. Yeah it can do 75 on the top end but I usually just ride roads where I can cruise at 50 to 60+ all day. It is all I really need anymore and a real dream to drive and handle with no shifting and much lighter 350 lb. over those 800+ lb. monster Goldwings. It's a real historic classic and I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon but I may still might be in the market for a 400 or 650cc Burgman as another collectors item if the right deal comes along.

    I love scooters.. all of them. I agree with your assessment totally. My experience include the Yamaha morphous 250 and the majesty 400. And they parallel the helix/ Silverwing . The bigger one is faster, yes.. but better? If you are going to do a LOT of touring... yes. But if you are going to do city riding, and SOME touring.. the helix or morphous will fill the bill. I have run 2000 mile trips on the morphous. With no trouble. I only had the helix a few years and it was great for the rides that i did but i never got much farther than a couple hundred miles from home on it..

    I've owned a 2013 PCX 150 and currently have a '21 PCX (160). I put 8k on the '13, and currently have 16k on the '21. I loved both bikes but last week I purchased a very clean '06 Helix. I've always liked them but never owned one. I recently completed the Scooter Cannonball Run with the PCX, and there were 4-6 Helixes in the bunch. You could tell all the owners loved their bikes. I like mine so far so I guess the PCX will be up for sale shortly.

    There are people who've put 70k + miles on their Silverwing. My 2006' has 20k with no problem AT ALL. It's the most comfortable, and will go 115 like google says. Been there done that. So when your needing to use the interstate and you want to pass someone who's doing 70+ it's funny to look at the driver's face and how surprised that a scooter can go that fast. Also, at a light it will beat most 'normal' car's. 0-60 in like 7.0. 50m.p.g. still ain't bad.

    I rode an Elite 80 for 15 years until the bike was stolen last year. Thankfully i was compensated a decent amount for my loss from my insurance company. I agree the bike was fun, and i loved it myself. However there are 2 problems that plague the Elite 80. One is the intake carb boot in between the air box, and engine. The boot is made from a combination of rubber, and metal. Over time the rubber separates from the metal causing air leaks which results in hard starting/rough idling/stalling, and the air box tube popping off the carb causing a throaty throttle noise. You can test the boot with the side cover off, and the engine idling. If the idle changes as you flex the carb by hand more than likely the boot is cracked. I mended mine with JB Weld which did last awhile, but cracked again. The boot is hard to find in the used market, and very expensive brand new if you can find it. Another problem is the original stock tires are garbage. If you are going to buy tires i would greatly recommend to stay away from the cheap tires, and get decent named brand tires. Been there done that. The cheaper tires easily wear out regardless of how agressive the tread is. I recommend Michelin S1's, and convert the tires to tubeless with tubeless valve stems. From experience i blew 2 rear tubes out which i think was caused by heat build up from the rear wheel. Honda used tubeless wheels with tubed tires on these bikes which i would never understand lol. As for prices to find a decent cheap Elite 80 right now for under 1000 dollars is very hard.

    When I first started scooter shopping (over 6'2" and in my fifties at the time), a couple of Helix scooters were the first motorbikes I sat on. The Helix's right foot brake pedal turned out to the deal breaker for me. I ended up with a 2009 Kymco Grandvista 250. Great commuter (30 miles each way on rural roads) with good storage, and capable on interstate quality roads--though, I always thought I would feel safer on a heavier machine in such situations. After 6 years and ablack ice crack up, I've benn considering re-entering the market. An honest to goodness '03 Reflex (looking nothing like a Helix) is available nearby. I wonder...

    • @yng4evr68
      @yng4evr68 Před rokem

      I just bought a Helix and I cannot get used to the foot brake. Plus, there's no room to rest your right foot when cruising. I'm thinking of looking into retrofitting a left brake lever to the bike. Can't be too hard as the Helix has a cable operated rear brake.

  • @intronofficial5245
    @intronofficial5245 Před 3 lety +6

    If they redid the Helix with a bit more power, modernization of the instrumentation while retaining the style, and potentially a larger rear wheel. I'd buy that. Honda should revisit this design; underrated but cherished.

    • @bechtoea
      @bechtoea Před 3 lety +1

      There are many scooters that have exactly what you stated the Helix needed. The reality is the Helix is just fine as is. Any move to make it faster accelerating or give it more top end ultimately effects the weight and handling of the machine. I think the Helix is perfect how it is.

    • @papaballoon

      I agree that the helix is the (second) best scooter ever.. i owned one.. loved it. I later got a Morphous. Yamaha 250 scooter. Same basic rig..13/13 wheels, disc's both ends, efi, electronic ignition. Its a "better" helix. I also owned a 400 majesty.. close to the silver wing in size and power. Loved it too. But if i had a choice morphous 1, helix 1.1 maj 2.

    I have recently been toying with getting another scooter. Been researching silverwings because I’m your size and do enjoy longer rides. But the fuel economy has steered me clear of that. I really really am interested in the helix. I do have a question for you helix owners. How much does the foot brake get in the way of your foot room when stretched out cruising? My only concern. So basically, it all boiler's down to the application of where and how long you're riding for. In town with constant red light to red light stop and go traffic the smaller scooters are better and touring you want a larger scooter. Inner city riding the smaller scooter are better. If you live in the suburbs, the 250cc are perfect and long distance and touring the Silverwing. It all makes sense. What we all need are 2 or 3 scooters in the garage to satisfy the riding one is going to do that day.

    A few things missed in your comparisons that I would've liked. I want a scooter to put on the back of my RV instead of dragging around a 3500lb car. I am 270lbs my wife is 185lbs. Naturally a second rider with weight can only choose the Silverwing. The top end will also be reduced by at least 40 mph but will still allow for highway driving. Any of the others will crawl with that weight. Secondly the only one with ABS is the Silverwing again. Stopping distance is a huge safety issue. Next acceleration to get on a freeway, Silverwing again wins hands down. Storage capability Silverwing! Antitheft Silverwing. Most Gorgeous Silverwing. Dependability hmmmm. usually the one that has to work the least is more dependable. Silverwing! Price Silverwing!

    My 2 cents, buy a 150 or 250cc Honda, I prefer the late 80's and 90's. Cheap, reliable, liquid cooled, more than enough speed for most commuting. I don't think any scooter should be on the highway and when you start getting into 400cc and larger engines, we start getting into a whole different animal. I've owned many scooters, you can't beat the Helix and my next pick would be an Elite 150 or 250, 87 is better looking IMO.
