The generation of the SC is my absolute favorite, it has the best looks and the wonderful air cooled flat 6 engine, even better if it's the Turbo version!
@Dario Liotine SC all day long and twice on Sunday. I have no idea what he's talking about poor reputation, the cars are strong, quick, reliable and have the classic air cooled look.
964 all day. I had a C2 and have driven it back to back with a C4 and a C4 Celebration. C2 definitely feels much lighter especially against the wide bodied Celebration. I also had an SC and a 3.2 and would prefer to go all the way back to a longhood if I wanted the classic experience. 964 is still my favorite 911.

I would love to own a 964 C4 and may one day. Classic 911 experience + AWD performance. There aren't many older AWD cars out there let alone sports cars. People still criticise C4 models whether it is a 996 C4S with the mechanical coupling or the 997.2-->991.2 models with their fantastic electronic differential.
Prior to the G50 gear box there was the 915 and prior to the 915 was the 901 ' Dog Leg ' . When You got into the 964 you mentioned right away that it felt much more moden perhaps due to the seats. Well its probably has a lot more to do with the suspension than the seats . Prior to the 964 generation 911's always used the old torsion bar suspension. But when Porsche made the 964 the made the big change of going from torsion bar suspension to modern coil overs . Also if Im not mistaken 964's had power steering, power assisted brakes and ABS.
The main thing is to point out the relevant differences - and/or common points - which you have done very well. I love the steering wheel of the 911 SC but I would rather own The 964 SC4. Both lovely collectibles !

Now, having had an SC slide off the road backward (yup, my fault), I wanted the C4. I have no complaints about it, as I drive it in the rain and on some less than ideal roads. I do have a chip in it, and a cat bypass, so that helps. I will say though, I love the sound of your 964, it's a bit throatier than mine. Mr. Number 27, I know you converted yours to a C2 (its gorgeous), but I will keep mine as a C4. No complaints, and no backward driving for me anymore lol. Thanks again for the upload :)
Unloved or not, they're both way out of my price range, unfortunately. Your video is excellent. I especially liked the backdrop for the opening scene; a cross between industrial brutalism and German surrealism, and excellent. One thing you do, which is brilliant, is you glance up to the camera when you are talking. This makes the viewer feel you are talking directly to them, and, thus, engages them, making them feel " special ". It's genius.
Fun watching your spontaneous back and forth between the modern and vintage Porsches. Since you have seemed to moved past Porsches now, curious if you made a snap, off the top of your head choice, which would you select as the only one you could have for eternity.
Wow.. not totally sure. I’ve yet to drive an early standard 911. A longhood 72 say.. that’s what I need to do before I make my mind up but I suspect that would be what I keep!
Love your videos, very authentic in the way you describe your experiences. Started with your 12 car serie. Being an ordinary petrol head myself, but 911 fan and proud on my wedding car, the SC, I was surprised to discover it as being the most 'unloved' 911. I simply never talk about mine as a lot of fellow petrol heads immediately 'box you', especially when equally enjoying my other hobby cycle car, a MG PB 1934 (to be Marshall blown). Likewise as you said (!) I always found you have to 'work' the SC; always thought thats the enjoyment (a howling engine, nose diving & digging, left/right throwing in corners especially on a B road is pure fun); sorry no experience with 'tip-tronic'. Most positive of the SC is you can easy maintain it all yourself with simple tools. The only negative point I found was the weekly supermarket visit; for that we quickly adopted a Panda (on which I have the most Dutch speeding tickets per month, but in NL this another form of enjoyment tax). I hope you had another opportunity to try out the SC and perhaps you do like the 911 SC classic a little more. Looking forward to your other videos...
Great compare! Two cars I've never driven or ridden in so very helpful. Interesting you find the SC more rev-ey than the 3.2. I find the 3.2 super fast to spool up. The 964 has power steering, right? That had to feel pretty different. I know the 993 and 3.2 are very different, but I think the 964 is more driver focused that the 993. Interesting how different they can be! Thanks! F
The 964 does have power steering.. so yes that feels very different.. everything on the SC and 3.2 is so much heavier. I do prefer a 964 to 993..but they're just different, no better or worse. As you say 964 is a bit more raw. Thanks for watching Franny!
Quite enjoyed the video, nice to see and hear these cars. One big omission though (for people that don't know) you compared the steering feel but neglected to mention one huge difference-- the 964 has power assisted steering.
I still love the SC........1st thing I bought when I got my record deal in '90. A black SC targa BAO 34Y,£8000! The last SC I bought was a '79 in Mocha,only £4500 11 years ago as the wings were iffy. I replaced them and promptly sold it for £10k.......and yet I didnt get a clue from this about what values were doing! I'd really like to own another but they are now way out of reach for me. Have to say the 964 is a very pretty machine think it’s what I’d have over the SC, I like a bit of liveliness in a car chassis so agree a 2 would be for me also!
Been driving a 78' SC daily for almost 2 years now. I had seat time in many 3.2's as well as a couple 964's (both 2 and 4) and I found the SC to be a lot more playful and responsive. The SC, IMO, is where practicality and vintage meet perfectly.
Great video. The early 80s 911 SC is a better driving and more fun to drive than the early 70s 911S, Less expensive too, but by no means unloved. I'm not taking anything away from a 70s 911S, they are iconic, I'd love to have one but the SC is simply better vehicle and a more powerful air cooled 911. The SC was rallied back in the day too. I love the SC, its bullet proof.
I can compare my 3.2 with a classic 2.2E injection...That older car likes to rev a lot better and the 3.2 looks more liniar. Steering on the old is realy light and suspension on the 3.2 is realy stiff . But the 3.2 has that 'modern' motormanagment . Starts & runs perfect all the time. Brakes are fantastic runs like a dream ,Only misses the playfull & rev loving character of the old car. And than you have the price of both cars...I love my 3.2 but I like to have it more responsive on the engine . My dealer/specialist told me it drives perfect as you can expect from that car. Thanks for the nice review . I learn every time a bit more.
Well,it may be the SC 3.0 (in its several iterations) is not a sought after Porsche in our days,but for sure it has been a best seller in its days. Good car in the 180 / 188 hp versions, great in the final 204 hp edition. I owned both the 188 and 204 hp, and I had a great time with these cars as daily drivers albeit I wouldn't recommend buying one today as a commuter on daily basis.
You are probably right that the c4 is a little less responsive as power goes through front wheels but once the heavens open ,it still corners at the same speeds more or less,great review btw
Excellent video. They are unloved but they do not deserve it. The only knock, and it´s a tiny one, for the SC is the belt tensioner issue, you have to upgrade to the hydraulic unit. Beyond that the car is perfect and beautiful. The 964 was the first ´modern´ 911. The bumpers give it a bad wrap but beyond that the car is bullet-proof.
It's a no brainer. The 964 went to a 3.6l, power steering and ABS brakes were added...substantially revised suspension, replacing torsion bars with coil springs and shock absorbers. Let's not forgot, the G50 gearbox!
Back in the 1990's these ; " Porsche 964 C4 and 911 SC" were not considered "unloved" cars. The "unloved 911" then was the first impact bumper 2.7 from 1974.
I think & believe that a C4 - in original spec, intended setup & quality - really profits understeering-wise from 35 years of tyre technology. (compared to '90s Pirelli-grip) 964 C4 1989 - me six years old back then - still original - still in love, but in a different way.... I miss your "project".... don't you?
The problem of SC and 964 being 'unloved' possibly comes from what's being offered by the model between them, the 3.2 Carrera. SC compare to 3.2 it lacks digital injection and a G50 box, which some considered to be a large step up in terms of usability and reliability. On the other hand, 964 compares to 3.2 it lacks fuchs wheels and torsion bars, some also considered as part of the soul of a vintage air-cooled 911. Usually, 3.2s are no more expensive than SC / 964 but offer a better sweet-spot between classic / usability / price, and you will see 3.2 Carrera more often than SC or 964 on the road nowadays.
Lovely video but I don't follow the premise. I've never known the 911sc to be unloved. It's a wonderful car for it's time and now it's practically a piece of art history.

Gina from Total 911, right? Thought I recognized those two cars from her columns. 964 for me. Looks and sounds absolutely stunning. Another great video Jack. They really are getting better and better. Like others have said, this is up there with Harry's channel in my opinion.
My first Porsche was a 911 Typ 964 (the first Carrera 4, in black, exactly the same as in the subject), used as a daily in the Alps, including going to sky station and coming back with my snowboard, and also traveling Europa in France, Germany, Italy (yes, Venice for a romantic time). And I could witness this car was perfect, especially if you don't respect speed limits. Maybe don't respecting the 230km/h limit. From point A to point B, flawlessly and really quick... And I also tried a Classic 911, without any driver assist, without break assist, without steering wheel assist. It's an incredible experience! This is not the car you would want to travel Europa, this is the car you want to be a pilot and experience unfiltered car piloting, and have incredible pleasure doing so! 911 are not politically correct, they are incredible fun toys to drive or pilot. Nota bene: notice that the 964 have a specific exhaust, that is *NOT* the regular exhaust
I like the film, but I disagree a little on your conclusions. I have some thousands of miles of experience on both the SC, 3.2 and 964 and I don't believe that you can conclude with one of the models being more fun/boring than the other. If you drive 4 different SC's or 3.2's or 964's, I bet they are all different even though it's compared to the same model year. That said, your video says "unloved". The SC, 3.2 and 964 have all had a massive increase in value the last 5 years. Calling them unloved is just wrong. The SC, 3.2 and 964 (and also the 993) is the 911's that is known for the best reliability in the 911 range. The 2.7 and older 911 have all got issues which has been resolved from the SC and onwards. When Porsche went to watercooled engines, the 996 and 997 have gotten their portion of problems. So.... what are you on about?

... what we believe the "technical" resource for this overall presentation came from the various literature write-ups of the times about these cars in their perspective era ... not an evaluation based on real life technical hands-on long term experience with these cars today. All of those time based complaints noted have been rectified over the years since ... from hydraulic chain tensioners to suspension and brake upgrades on the SC's now to even engine sealing technology now for the early 964's and eve the 915 certainly has it's unique overtures as does the G50 trans but overall to say these cars were at anytime unloved is ridiculous and I say this based on having been wrenching on these P-rides since 1970 ...
The 964 C4 is far from unloved. Prices for it have been higher than those for the C2 for years now. It is also one of the preferred platforms for the Singer cars.
The loved and now pricy 911SC and 964 coupe. Concours quality Super Carreras bring $60k and the 964 same big $$$. Both of these cars reliability and racing history by far out weigh the 996 and even the modern 997.
im no expert but they say 911 breaks are generally the best in the business, as they need to be for the slow in fast out.... so i imagine her breaks were off, not normal/////
Good review. I have a 1981 sc and love the classic character it has. Gearbox is a bit challenging but rewarding as the whole car is. Recently drove my father in laws 964 c2 which is in fab condition, but somehow liked my old sc more. Anyhow, I would also like a newer modern 911. Here is a few good reasons the 911sc really was a poor car. Having owned one I'll give my take on this. First of all it was just plain slow. No horsepower. Handling was terrible. Turn the steering wheel and the care still went straight as the front end was two light. Thirdly, you need long arms for the shift throw and two feet to depress the hard clutch. Air condition was essentially non existent. I longed for my old 924. I did give give Porsche another shot at my affection with the Boxster for which I found redemption up until the baring gave out. I hope they one day produce a great sports car!
Please message me if you have one of these unloved SC’s or 964’s that is taking up room in your garage. They are “rubbish” but I will help you make room for your proper 911.
Unloved my ass they are still $70/80k I would buy one but if you are lucky you need at least 30k to make it a decent car , at this point with 70k you could buy a 997 3.6 with the nowaday technology
The debates over these is WHY I hate Porsche's. The fanboys are insufferable and completely turn me off to the brand. Just enjoy your car, shut up and don't tell me why I shouldn't enjoy mine.

The 911 CS is going up in price. Some are going for $80,000 Dollars depending on the condition.

Why then are you putting them down now?
Traded my 73 RS for a 78 911 SC. Multiple leakage problems due to paper gaskets installed. Installed new after market gaskets and all was well.

Porsche 964 C4 and 911 SC" were not considered "unloved" cars. The "unloved 911" then was the first impact bumper 2.7 from 1974.
SC prices have doubled in the last 5 years.
There is no such thing as an unloved 911. There may be more sought after models but even the 996 is loved by many.
I think & believe that a C4 - in original spec, intended setup & quality - really profits understeering-wise from 35 years of tyre technology. (compared to '90s Pirelli-grip)
964 C4 1989 - me six years old back then - still original - still in love, but in a different way....

The problem of SC and 964 being 'unloved' possibly comes from what's being offered by the model between them, the 3.2 Carrera. SC compare to 3.2 it lacks digital injection and a G50 box, which some considered to be a large step up in terms of usability and reliability. On the other hand, 964 compares to 3.2 it lacks fuchs wheels and torsion bars, some also considered as part of the soul of a vintage air-cooled 911. Usually, 3.2s are no more expensive than SC / 964 but offer a better sweet-spot between classic / usability / price, and you will see 3.2 Carrera more often than SC or 964 on the road nowadays.

My first Porsche was a 911 Typ 964 (the first Carrera 4, in black, exactly the same as in the subject), used as a daily in the Alps, including going to sky station and coming back with my snowboard, and also traveling Europa in France, Germany, Italy (yes, Venice for a romantic time). And I could witness this car was perfect, especially if you don't respect speed limits. Maybe don't respecting the 230km/h limit.
From point A to point B, flawlessly and really quick...
And I also tried a Classic 911, without any driver assist, without break assist, without steering wheel assist. It's an incredible experience!
This is not the car you would want to travel Europa, this is the car you want to be a pilot and experience unfiltered car piloting, and have incredible pleasure doing so!
911 are not politically correct, they are incredible fun toys to drive or pilot.
Nota bene: notice that the 964 have a specific exhaust, that is *NOT* the regular exhaust
I like the film, but I disagree a little on your conclusions. I have some thousands of miles of experience on both the SC, 3.2 and 964 and I don't believe that you can conclude with one of the models being more fun/boring than the other. If you drive 4 different SC's or 3.2's or 964's, I bet they are all different even though it's compared to the same model year. That said, your video says "unloved". The SC, 3.2 and 964 have all had a massive increase in value the last 5 years. Calling them unloved is just wrong. The SC, 3.2 and 964 (and also the 993) is the 911's that is known for the best reliability in the 911 range. The 2.7 and older 911 have all got issues which has been resolved from the SC and onwards. When Porsche went to watercooled engines, the 996 and 997 have gotten their portion of problems.
So.... what are you on about?
I don't know anyone who doesn't love a bad-ass C4 964- might be the best Porsche ever made. Certainly Singer loves them!

... what we believe the "technical" resource for this overall presentation came from the various literature write-ups of the times about these cars in their perspective era ... not an evaluation based on real life technical hands-on long term experience with these cars today. All of those time based complaints noted have been rectified over the years since ... from hydraulic chain tensioners to suspension and brake upgrades on the SC's now to even engine sealing technology now for the early 964's and eve the 915 certainly has it's unique overtures as does the G50 trans but overall to say these cars were at anytime unloved is ridiculous and I say this based on having been wrenching on these P-rides since 1970 ...
Not at all unloved as prices for nice ones are stratospheric. The SC looks better but either way they are a collectable 3rd or 4th car.

The 964 C4 is far from unloved. Prices for it have been higher than those for the C2 for years now. It is also one of the preferred platforms for the Singer cars.

The loved and now pricy 911SC and 964 coupe. Concours quality Super Carreras bring $60k and the 964 same big $$$. Both of these cars reliability and racing history by far out weigh the 996 and even the modern 997.
The 964 is getting plenty of love from Singer.......donor 964's are going up in price.

The prices had gone up already but these were traditionally considered the black sheep of the 911 family..
Good review. I have a 1981 sc and love the classic character it has. Gearbox is a bit challenging but rewarding as the whole car is. Recently drove my father in laws 964 c2 which is in fab condition, but somehow liked my old sc more.
Anyhow, I would also like a newer modern 911. They are all great n their own way, even the ugly eyed 996 :)

Here is a few good reasons the 911sc really was a poor car. Having owned one I'll give my take on this. First of all it was just plain slow. No horsepower. Handling was terrible. Turn the steering wheel and the care still went straight as the front end was two light. Thirdly, you need long arms for the shift throw and two feet to depress the hard clutch. Air condition was essentially non existent. I longed for my old 924. I did give give Porsche another shot at my affection with the Boxster for which I found redemption up until the baring gave out. I hope they one day produce a great sports car!

Unloved my ass they are still $70/80k I would buy one but if you are lucky you need at least 30k to make it a decent car , at this point with 70k you could buy a 997 3.6 with the nowaday technology
