Kogan HD Sunglasses camera quick test & review

  • I just happened to win a brand new sunglasses cam from Kogan for $20 so decided to take it for a short drive. It was close to sunset so you can see light conditions vary on each section. I also took a separate footage under carpark but couldn't be bothered merging them but it still performed pretty well considering it was quite dark down there.
    Pros
    - Video quality is pretty good even for their official price at $59.
    - The sunglasses look pretty "normal" so you don't have to look like a geek while out & filming
    Cons
    - Poor made quality. wires are exposed and housing is too weak. There are even seams I can spot so every time I press it gently it makes squeaky noise. It would probably be ok for normal use but imagine if you are at snow or under little wet condition. I don't expect full water proof but the gaps should be reasonably sealed I believe.
    - Maybe I expect too much but field of view is a bit narrow so it doesn't feel like I'm in there but $10 fisheye kit for mobile phones can fix this problem (then you will look like a proper geek xD )
    - Time stamp overlay can be a problem
I've done little bit of research and according to Chuck Lohr's website it seems that the built-in camera module is type #17 and the website states that the time stamp cannot be disabled and describes the camera module as
" The #17 is one version of the 808 car keys micro camera. It takes real 720p video but has a bad missing frame rate, takes 2MP photos, has a real 2MP (1600x1200) sensor and costs about US$16 ".

hope this review helps people thinking about buying this camera

The manual from Kogan says the timestamp can be turned off by creating a .txt file called TIME.TXT in the SD card root directory with
    2012/12/12 12:12:12 N
as the contents. Change all those 12s to the current date and time. The N means the timestamp won't be displayed. Change the N to Y to bring the timestamp back.

Yeah I saw it as well and tried but didn't work. even if I put current date & time the camera would change it back to 2013 (which I assume date of manufacture). The "N" symbol remains but timestamp still prints on video.

Looks pretty damn good actually, better than I expected. $45 right now, shipped, with a 4GB card. I had to slow it down to notice dropped frames, looks like maybe 1 in 6 dropped but still pretty tempting at this price. Any comments on battery life? Thanks for the sample and review!
