- I’m telling you won’t believe this story. Today’s rocker Jim Peterik used to give this beautiful girl a ride home from school… He was head over heels in love with her. But she had no idea. He wanted this girl to notice him but he was already stuck in the friend zone so he wrote a song about her called Vehicle and brought it to his band Ides of March. They put some relish on it, and it blew up… it became the fastest-selling song in Warner Brothers history. Unfortunately, Vehicle would be a one-hit wonder.. but Jim was a fighter… He not only won over the girl’s heart with this song, he married her and he rose from the ashes to form Survivor, a band that would become one of the biggest rock acts of the 80s and he even got to the top of the charts again. Up next, the interview and story on Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. It’s our Patreon where you get more videos and can even be an honorary producer, check on that below. It helps us immensely. We also have merch below. let people know you’re a music lover.
It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightening where we celebrate a song that was king for a day or for many days. We honor artists and bands and that one glorious hit they had that rocketed up the charts…and for reasons unknown didn’t have another hit. We all know them for the term one-hit wonder but we try to step beyond that and celebrate them as Lightning in a bottle. Today’s bottled lightning classic comes from a man with purple hair. He’s written or co-written hits for everyone from The Beach Boys to Sammy Hagar to Lynyrd Skynyrd to 38 Special and for his own bands… Jim Peterik. He started performing in 1964 with some of his schoolmates in Illinois as the Ides of March. When their early Local hit came out and did well on the local charts, Future Reo Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin begged them to be the band at his high school’s senior prom.. much later that experience would come full circle but I’ll let Jim tell you.
So it was in the late 1960s and early 1970 that the Ides of March started to really make their mark when Jim wrote a little ditty called Vehicle that ended up going all the way to #2 becoming the fastest-selling single in Warner Bros history. He wrote the song about a girl that he was stuck on that moment that he felt used him only for transportation, getting her to and from modeling school. The energizing horns and fierce lead vocal turned this song into a classic of the 70s and has some funny stories tied to it.... I’ll let Jim tell you the rest.
Peterik graduated from Morton Junior College in 1970 and attended college classes while "Vehicle" became a national hit. Unfortunately after 3 more albums and many singles, they couldn’t snag another top 40 hit. SO THE IDES OF MARCH broke up and in 1976 Jim released a solo album, Don't Fight the Feeling, touring.... - Zábava
Poll: What is your pick for the song with the BEST HORN PARTS either collectively or a horn solo... including sax?
Blood, Sweat, Tears - Spinning Wheel
Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4
Herb Alpert - A Taste of Honey
Ides Of March - Vehicle
Careless Whispers - Sax
"Sh0tgun" Junior Walker and the All-Stars
Urgent - Foreigner
Harden My Heart - Quarterflash
Get Down Tonight, KC and the Sunshine Band
Also: Lettuce from NYC. I saw them open for Ziggy Marley last night
How awesome is it that he ended up with the girl, and they're still together?!!! I love that!!!❤❤❤
I'm more like the Jimi Hendrix song, Stone Free.
He won’t unlock the door.
And add that little quip about being more like 150 years in an Entertainment relationship's lifeline. I almost fell out of my chair.
I am only 38 and I'm that guy who remembers his favorite song, but not what I went into the next room for, so you know I dig this channel.
😂
I can't imagine Eye Of The Tiger never having been written. It was the big cherry on top of the movie Rocky, as well as being the inspirational 'push' that so many people used to keep pushing through a difficult situation. ❤
For sure!
Agreed! Love that song!
haha sounds like my late dad would say keep on pushing was a,football coach drilling players tiger was a perfect theme song for the movie
I mean everyone I know has grown up with that song.
At the end of high school I remember doing my SAT’s with “Eye Of The Tiger” roaring through my brain in an attempt to psych me up for the test. 😂
I know Vehicle, and I know Eye of the Tiger. Never knew it was the same man who brought us both songs. Great episode, as usual.
Jim Peterik also helped co-write 38 Special’s “Hold On Loosely”🎸👍🏼
Hold on loosely, heavy metal and many more
One of the greatest songs of all time! May Jim's hair always be purple! 🟣
Holy crap! The Professor just described me to a tee. I constantly forget why I walk into rooms. Yet I can sing most Boss songs word for word.
I was gonna reply but I forgot what I was gonna say 😂
Just don't walk into doors.
Ha ha!

@@dtw63beat me to it! 🤣
1971. I was a junior in high school. Learned to play trumpet playing along to Herb Alpert. Auditioned for a local rock band with them playing Vehicle. Long story short, that audition took me on a long and fascination journey for the next 4 years that has left me with a lifelong album of memories and friends I still chat with at least weekly… 53 years later.
Born that year. Turn 53 in October 21.
THanks!
@@enigmawyoming5201 Born that year, turn 53 on November 23.

Awesome!
Several years ago I was working stage and security. Jim performed and I was assigned to him. He went to the hospitality tent, I was standing behind him when a fan came up to hug him, he rose from the chair as he did, his boot heal caught on the bottom of the chair and he stumbled forward. I moved the chair to get it out of the way, he sat back down without looking and fell flat on his ass. I felt awful but didn’t say a thing about moving the chair. Several years later I was fortunate to get back stage passes at a Chicago area group concert. Jim was there and I had the chance to tell him what happened and apologized. He could not have been kinder, he said well it obviously didn’t hurt me, cause I’m here still rocking!! He is a Chicago legend and a class act.
This is a kewl story. Thank you for sharing.
I wonder what CZcams algorithm looks like after the Professor drops a video and everyone goes to look up the song. :)
Ha ha! I hope many tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands look up the song! Keep the music alive!
@@ProfessorofRock Yep, I immediately recognized the song when I looked it up on CZcams, but never knew the name or anything about it. It has now been added to a couple of my Spotify playlists. This has happened quite a few times since i started listening to your channel.
@@internettroll7604 Very cool! Have a great day!

John Waite's Missing You turns 40 yrs old this month. I'd love to hear an episode on that song if one hasn't already been done in the past...
40? Where has the time gone?
Interview forthcoming!
Yeah!..By 1984, The Baby's had broken up. Jonathan Cain had become the keyboardist & co-writer for Journey...Gary Myrick, a Dallas hometown favorite of ours, was working with John Waite & played guitar on #1 hit "Missing You". John Waite's portait of his own romantic complications during that fast moving period.
@ProfessorofRock John Waite's Change is such a great song. One of the most underrated songs of the 80's.
Wow that’s astounding so much time has passed!
I'm only 3 minutes into this story, when all of a sudden I realize. 'This is it!'
It's that "you never hear this song anymore" memory! My ❤️ is racing and then I hear the song Vehicle by The Ides of March!!! This is why I LOVE this channel, Professor.
Being raised and STILL here in Chicago, I'm so proud to call Jim P "Chicago's Own!❤
Having grown up about 80 miles west of Chicago, I also remember hearing " L.A. Goodbye" quite a bit on the mighty WLS. One of my all time favorite songs!
Technically …. Berrr wyyynnn
Horns were probably at their most popular on the charts at that time. Blood, Sweat and Tears, Ides, Chase, and of course, Chicago.
For sure. So many great bands!
And they are sadly missed.
Did you know that the opening horn section on the Beatles mid 70's release " got to get you into my life" was the Chicago horn section, just a fun fact y'all
@@squirreldriver Amen!
If you've never heard it, check out SRV live at Carnegie Hall. Used a horn section on several songs and it is just awesome!
Our marching band played Vehicle as one of our stand songs, back in high school. What a GREAT song, Jim Peterik...what a great guy!
Wow! I bet that sounded fantastic! Love marching band music.🥰
Love watching your interviews with Peterik, he tells his stories with such humor, enthusiasm, and energy. I honestly think I can watch him read a dictionary and find it enthralling.
I'm telling you, if you can write a smash hit song you'll never fail to get the girl. Tremendous story.
For sure!
@necwwrestling The song writer gets the girl...much easier if somehow that girl knows the song is for her. It would melt my heart to be so loved.
Unless your Karen Carpenter.
Jessie's Girl didn't get the girl for Rick Springfield...lol
That’s right!
The horns and this mans voice make it so you feel this song to the depths of your soul.
Soooo good.
I was in band from '68 to '74. The bands Chicago, BS&T, Chase and this tune was pure ear candy for us band nerds.
"Vehicle" is a great, hard-driving, gritty jazz-rock song reminiscent of Blood, Sweat and Tears and the early days of Chicago. It is a timeless classic. Jim, your vocals just nailed it. I wish we could have heard more of you on lead vocals. Congrats on your 47 years of marriage!
I love it that he remembers how he came up with the lyrics to “Vehicle.” Funny and genius!
Right?
A man doesn't forget something like that.
One the things I miss about the 70s in the use of horns and the sax (a woodwind) in rock music. Artists were not to afraid to experiment horns and the sax, or anything else for that matter, back then. I remember hearing the song "vehicle" on the AM radio station my folks played when I was a kid and loving the horns and sax.
Thanks for commenting!
In the early 70s especially those instruments were so common!
Jim Peterik has written some all time hits😮
NO question!
Definitely one of my favorite songwriters.
@@Code.Name.V And a good guy to boot!
🤠👍 Jim is one of the great prolific writers of all time.
Survivor with Jimmy Jameson was just about perfection. Peterik was the writer and an amazing keyboard player. They had a great guitar player as well. Add Jameson's perfect voice and charisma and you have a great band.
I loved the first singer for the band as well. He went on to do the "real men of genius" commercials.
All I kept thinking throughout this interview is..What A Talent!..What A Gem!..Karen is one lucky woman..❤❤❤❤...
Absolutely love Jim Peterik interviews...he is just an amazingly down to earth guy...as it Cronin. Remember hearing Vehicle all of the time on the radio. Great song! Amazing that he wrote it when he was 18. You never know when that creativity strikes. Love the back story...not only did he get the girl...they are still together so many years later. AWESOME!!!!
He’s so talented.
For the longest time, I thought this song was done by Blood Sweat & Tears. Sounds so much like them.
SO many think that!
Same here !!!
So did I!
Me too!❤
As a lighting director, I once lit Blood, Sweat, and Tears in the Bahamas at the Caribbean Music Festival. I wonder if ol' Jim knows that DCT sometimes did an amazing version of "Vehicle" in his shows. I was surprised and really loved it, as did the crowd. Such a great homage to his friend. Now that I've watched this, I know the connection.
I always thought Vehicle was performed by B.S.&T.! But 1971 I was just coming into my teen years, and had a transistor radio to listen to. The sound wasn't that great.
Now I know who performed it! Thanks Professor Adam! 👍
When you FIRST heard this song, did anyone else, like me, mistake this for a Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago tune?
Yeah, BS&T was my initial thought when I was younger. Had no idea he was part of the REO song.
Adam, this is now one my favorite of your many interviews! I’m 71 years old, I loved Ides of March! Bottled Lightening for sure! Thanks for all your hard work and sharing the results!💫
Love the horns in the song.
They hook you for sure.
So catchy!
I heard Chicago when I first heard this song. Then a buddy said no. They're better than that. He said the group is Ides of March. What!? I still sing this song loud! Great composition.
As he said, always thought Vehicle was by Blood Sweat and Tears. LOL.
Some people are just able to touch our hearts with their music.
No question!

Ides of March, vehicle. Probably the greatest song of its time. To this day, still one of my favorites.
i had never heard the song before but the fact that they are still together after 47 years is a minor miracle these days! i wish them all the best.
Great story! Especially enjoyed Jim’s attitude toward the song, success, and his career. Truly seems to be a likable person.
He is a great dude!
It's that quick silence, then bada-bump-a-dump drum "solo" in the middle I look forward to every time I hear this song. Genius!
God bless him. There is so much character in his voice and the music. Amazing.
I can’t write songs, but I can cook. And I can listen to boring stories, compliment shoes and nails and bring random gifts, all of these the next best thing to writing a girl a song.
@Kingfisher1215 Will you marry me? 🤣🤣🤣
Great interview! Funny when they kept doing encores during the Neil Diamond show. That's awesome he got the girl and they have been married 47 years 💗
Really cool that he gives Bill Griner, RS, unofficial song writing credit.

What an awesome story that they reconnected and are still together 47 years later.
Awesome story as usual. Love Jim Peterik's humor and enthusiasm.
Leonid and Friends, one of the best Chicago cover bands ever, put their spin on Vehicle and it's amazing.
Thank you for this one! Jim is great person, regardless of his amazing songwriting. Larry Millas is also great. We've the honor of recording with him, Larry as our engineer. A fantastic ear for good music! Thanks again for this one professor!
I love "Vehicle." I have always loved BST and pre 1976 Chicago (and post for that matter). Music needs more horns. Does anyone remember "Sounds of the 70s?" My dad had the entire collection and that was my first exposure to most of these songs, especially "Vehicle" (it wasn't until the mid 90s that my area got a Classic or Modern Rock Station). Knowing the story now makes me wonder if my favorite Survivor song, "The Search is Over", is a sequel to "Vehicle?"
I agree!
I think I had that collection too.
I do - have MOST of the volumes but, an absolutely-ESSENTIAL one is Vol. 6.....
Ides of March played at my sock hop at Kaneville, Kanelandd High School. Lovely night ❤❤❤
And a lot of people don't know that Jim Peterik also wrote some of 38 Special's biggest songs too. Rocking Into the Night, Hold on Loosely, Caught Up in You, Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, and Fantasy Girl.
I grew up listening to this music with my dad, remember the first time I heard this was with him riding in his truck. Good memories. Thanks professor.
Thanks for listening
I have a buddy who was a session musician on that track. He played in the sax department. He spent his tour in Vietnam playing for the dignitaries who arrived at the air bases. to this day, his Saxaphone playing is amazing.
“She’s my toughest critic and my biggest fan.” I will remember this quote.

Eye of the tiger ate up the year for me. It was a good song. I remember that summer (1982) very, very well. Music takes me immediately, to the time period that the music came out. It’s like setting a Time Machine.
How Jim Peterik got the lyrics, "Hey, well, I'm the friendly stranger in the black sedan. Won't you hop inside my car?" was super funny! Love the song, love this interesting interview! You're the best, Professor. Cheers.
The name rarely rings a bell but the look and music totally do.

“Those were the days” was a song that Paul McCartney found in Russia. An old traditional drinking song called “Down the long road”. The “Odessa Balalaikas” has the song with the original Russian lyrics. New English lyrics were applied to the song which still gave the effect of a tavern sing.
Thanks for sharing.
LA Goodbye is my favorite Peterik tune.
My favorite Ides of March song is "Moon Out of Phase". Favorite song that Peterik sings lead vocals on would be the uber obscure "Moving and Growing" from the "Don't Fight the Feeling... and More" expanded deluxe CD. It was an indie re-issue Jim Peterik did of his solo album with several of his 70s demos added to it. Personally, I think the wrong songs were picked for "Don't Fight the Feeling" in 1976. I would have only kept "Let There Be Song". To me "Moving and Growing" would have been the most commercial sounding song. and would possibly appeal to the "L.A. Goodbye" fans. They are both sort of nostalgic songs. With songs like "Chi-Town Hustler" and "Teenage Machine Age" possibly appealing to the "Vehicle" fans. Though, "Teenage Machine Age" might have been too different, just in general. It could be seen as "kitschy" or as "prog rock". However, the lyric "program me with rock n' roll" makes me think of the Johnny 5 robot in Short Circuit who loved rock music even though the song predates that movie by around 10+ years. His second solo album, Above the Storm, came out in 2006 and was a better album than the 1976 one. Bo Bice performed "Vehicle" on Idol back in 2005 (I bought the CD single). Subsequently, Peterik sang a couple of songs that he co-wrote with the Van Zant brothers on that 2006 album that had a little bit of a southern rock sound to them. He also put the Ides of March sounding song "Secrets of a Woman" on that album. The Ides brass section played on that song. Later, he rerecorded that song for the Ides of March "Still 19" album.
Vehicle gets the blood pumping. Great song!
Wow, "Vehicle" one of my G.O.A.T. tunes.
"Vehicle" is one of those tunes that with the opening horn riff, you know exactly what tune it is, not many can make that claim.
Jim is right. Lots of folks thought the tune was by BS&T or Chicago, or even a few other "Horn" bands. Because of that, it became my favorite rock trivia question.
In over more than 30 years asking, NO ONE ever got it right, until I was in a "Home Depot" store and "Vehicle" came on the PA system. I just asked to the air, "Who recorded that tune"? and this guy walked over from the next isle and said :"Ides of March". I just stood there and slowly clapped my hands, and bowed. When I told him that he was the first one to get the question right, he said "Yes (as Jim said) most people think it was done by BS&T. Again I clapped and bowed. I spent almost an hour talking with a perfect strange about Rock and Roll, kind of like I do here. "Vehicle" is a tune that passes being "iconic" because it's actually legendary.
What a neat interview, now we all know the song's about his girl friend, and not about some guy trying to pick up a girl, or a drug dealer. ;-)
For sure!
I agree. The first band I would have thought of if I heard this song would have been Chicago.
So Jim Peterik had a friend first, then had a friend with benefits later. I like that story. 47 years together. I guess beautiful romances start has friends first and then lovers later.
Note to self, "If I do come back to do it ALL over again, be her friend first. The rest will fall into place."
I love the friends to lovers trope in books too.
Yes, be a friend, and also, have a friend. Gotta be both ways to work.
I remember hearing this song when I was a little kid in my mom’s back seat on the oldies station (that now plays the stuff from when I was in High School). It’s just so different from everything. I love it. I had no idea it was from the dude from Survivor.
Now ya know! Isn't that cool! Great song eh?
That is why this is THE premier music channel. Adam always teaches us something new.
Jim has done a lot!
Hell, i don't have to walk into the next room to forget things, i just have to stand up. Then i just sit back down.
I joke about ADHD and being easily distracted by shiny objects.
Love this one! I can't even imagine Rocky with Another one bites the dust as their song! Eye of the Tiger is the only one that it could ever be!! LOL
Jim taught me how to write a song, ( quite literally), I have written verse all my life and my wife kept asking me why I didn't try writing songs.
I told her I had zero idea how a song was structured and. I'm not musical, she did the typical wife thing and told me to " find out how" so I started researching.
I bought myself Song Writing For Dummies by some guy with an unpronounceable Sir name and started to study the process.
That was 20 years ago and since then I have written countless songs and had many played on the radio which is always a massive thrill so I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jim for his marvellous guidance and for all the joy that writing and performing music has brought to my life and for prompting me to pick up and learn an instrument all of which lead me to front several groups playing my songs.
The man literally changed my life❤
I heard an interview years ago where John Denver called David Clayton Thomas the best singer in rock. If that’s true, Peterik can’t be far behind.
True!
"If you remember the lyrics to just about every 60's, 70's and 80's song, but forget why you walked into the next room..." Yep, that's me! 😂 Great interview, BTW.
PoR, I never thought Ides Of March was a one hit wonder with "Vehicle". I've always thought their song "LA Goodbye" was a good song which should've been
a big hit. People can find real good live versions of "LA Goodbye" too. After listening to their song "You Wouldn't Listen" for the first time it sounds pretty good.
Wow, what a great backstory to such a smashing song! One of my favorites to belt out on the saxophone in Pep Band
I'm the trombone player with the 70's horn band The Gringos. When Vehicle was first released our band leader and arranger arranged it for our band and we played that song every chance we got. Still love the song and it's memorable horn riffs.

Dang, you’re the best, Prof. You truly rock!
I became conscious of how Jim Peterik had been in Ides of March when I became a Survivor fan in the early 2000s. I was already conscious of how they had hit with "Vehicle" and how its commercial popularity was part and parcel with the vogue of horn-driven rock and pop hits from the turn of the 70s, probably due more to Chicago than BS&T. The new nugget of info for me here was the part regarding how Ides of March had opened for Neil Diamond. Aside from Neil being my first ever pop hero dating back to when I was 3 years old, it only happens that as of July 2024 when I'm commenting, I've just written a personal ode to the man that I'm including on my present recording project of New York songs. It's great to hear Jim acknowledge the assistance that Neil gave him and the Ides of March members when they were his opening act. He said it was negative, but I think it was more about troubleshooting.
Thanks for sharing your insight Eric!

I guess it's a better title than 'I'm Your Uber'! :)
