How to make a base frame for a hair-up headdress or hair piece

- This is how I made the base for several of my hair-up and show projects in the past. With this base you could easily make a headdress for a carnival, festival or whatever you like, so not really exclusively for hairstylists this video...

I'm really drawn to a lot of sorta obscure (obviously a relative term) forms of craftmaking, like this - stuff where there aren't necessarily a bunch of classes out there for it - and my problem with these inclinations of mine is that I never know where to start. I've found it deceptively difficult to find detailed guidance, for total beginners, for a lot of these things. So I just want to say thank you so much, I appreciate it! You can also wrap the wire with thing craft foam to make it more comfortable.

Great information about the basics of making a base for a headdress. I was looking for a technique like this that didn't require the use of a soldering iron or spot welder to meld the wire joins together, particularly if they are to be covered with ribbon. I would also advise using foam sheets, cut into strips and applied via hot glue to the wire; prior to wrapping with ribbon. All & all....Thanks for the tutorial👌

I had to cut up make-up applicators once before and stuff them just behind the ears to stop a headdress based off this from rubbing on a models head once. The way I'd built off it meant that it lost most of its flexibility and over time, it wasn't so comfortable for her. She was wearing it for 10+ hours though.... Trooper!

+Zia m This is just the first link I came across on amazon to give you an idea www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00L3EXXCO but basically its just a sheet of soft, rubbery material you can cut up and use as padding. In a pinch I used those foam make-up blenders you use to apply foundation, but if you were planning ahead, the sheets would be better, I was just improvising with what I had at the show, though they did work too. You could use and soft, spongey material I guess.

Would loooooove to see structured high "hair" looking pieces. Have always been fascinated by the high structure of BOF's streaked hair, and of course when doing absurdist beehives, they need wire or a rip in the O-zone. :)

Thank you for this! I made a rookie mistake - made a lovely (fairly small) headpiece that I attached to a headband, and discovered it wouldn't stay on my dang head when I danced. I don't know why I didn't think of it, but your tutorial gave me the lightbulb: wire around the back of the head. Saved the day.

You're welcome :) That is actually how I came to do it this way, I used to use plastic alice bands, but they just didn't have the strength or support that I needed, so I branched out to making my own with wire. Best of luck!

I couldn't recommend the foam sheets/strips/satin ribbon technique enough. They ensure your wire structure stays pliable/flexible.
I have successfully made 4 head bases of various sizes and height; that we're made for the purpose of the catwalk. Comfort for the model is imperative, as is durability...who the hell wants to see sh*t fall apart when masses of people are oogling it on the catwalk...not I.

Found a Skull version of it. Its fantastic... also for hotglue ect.

I am trying to design headdresses with fire torches incorporated. I know thd torch pieces should be stainless steel, but do you think this base is safe enough to secure the element of fire if oriented properly off the head or use a welded base? I fully understand the ramifications of the obvious dangers.

Foam sheets are available at any craft supply store. Usually available in A4 sheets, so economical to buy in a pack or individually.
Once you have them...cut the sheet into 3/4mm strips and bind them around your wire with hot glue (via a hot glue gun).
If your after another level of "aesthetically" pleasing visual, wrap the foam strips (once dried on your wire structure) with satin ribbon. Narrower widths are easier to manage.

Ha! I loved that head dress, but unfortunately I'd had to cut it to pieces after the show I used it for in order to remove it from the models head. It did have chicken wire on it too which had backcombed and tangled hair running through it. It looked fantastic, but the poor girls hair was so tangled in it all by the end that using pliars to cut it off her head was the best way to take it off.. so Yeah, it was kind of destroyed by the time I made this video :( Luckily no innocent models were harmed during the making of it :D

It sounded like he said 2 MM but the Fire Mountain Gems conversion guide says that would be about 12 guage and I feel like that won't bend much? I need to know for a project I have to finish by Saturday! (in 2 days!)
@@kryztyne2006 I used 18 gauge stainless today (since that's what I had on-hand and it pliable enough to work with while still being sturdy. Hope that helps!!! 😁

He says "Essentially everything is build out of galvanized wire; galvanized steel wire. I think this is 2 millimeters thick. You can get it in just about any hardware center." at 2:47 . I hope this helps.
