  • Crawfish are a Southern delicacy that are always in high demand - but this year, they're in short supply. The crustaceans are hard to find right now due to a devastating drought in the region, and that's hurting a lot of wallets in Louisiana. Janet Shamlian reports.

    Crawfish and rice are a staples in Louisiana. Both are being hurt by climate change. It’s a hard life for these workers. Unfortunately, it May cause 2 industries to fail.

      ​@@anb7408 No water eh. The Mississippi River flows clear into the ocean, and you just waste all that water. That one river discharges about 593,000 cubic feet of water per second into the gulf.

    Went 3 videos down and found one for a Louisiana company harvesting 60,000 pounds of crawfish a day from 6 months ago. How is that sustainable? Shortages come from over use.

    Unfortunately, this is just the start. I hate to be this guy, but I'm glad that it's starting to affect people's pockets so that they understand that this isn't a game. That's the only way these people will understand that there's a problem is when their money gets messed up. That's the only thing they understand

    That’s not a necessity food. Also it’s not light they’ll lower the price back to original when the stock increases back to normal. Long term they’ll make more than they missed.

    How come the farmers don't have back up wells for the drought season I mean why does not the government give the farmers aid by haveing wells for the drought season or have the government supply the water during the drought season.

      Nah wild caught is a very small fraction. Most are harvested on rice fields during the off-season. This year we had a drought, bad rice crop, double bad crawfish crop. The silver lining is that the wetlands actually look like they recovered a bit

    It is all about timing for these crawfish farmers they have a season and are commercial fishers and farmers. They only have so much time to seed and grow a crawfish crop before they shut that operation down to plant and turn the same ponds into rice fields.
    Louisiana has plenty of swamps and marshy areas that produce crawfish from spring into summer that you can catch your own crawfish.

    Climate change even if by just a few degrees may mean Crawfish may need to be grown in other states, maybe they can grow something else, as it's not going to change other than to get a few degrees hoter each year rain or no rain.

    LOL there's no shortage, this is just how they justify raising the prices. I live in SW Louisiana, not one restaurant has reported "running out" of crawfish. Crawfish still flows like water, just costs as much as your electric bill now.

      Exactly, the son of a farmer/seller told me his ponds had no problems because they pumped their water from underground, and yet his crawfish are $13.99 a pound! On top of jacked up prices some congress critter is proposing a bill for the Federal government pay the farmers $300 an acre in disaster relief..............while they're charging 3-4 times the normal price!

      It's not overfishing that's causing the problem, but global warming. I don't expect things to change until something drastic happens, like when NYC or New Orleans goes under water.

      It has nothing to do with "over-fishing" as most of the farmers dig their own ponds, stock them adding "seeders" and then harvest what they raised. They wouldn't exist at all unless the farmers created and seeded the ponds!

      @@user-yq6cj2kt8t I believe that humans are affecting the climate and I also believe that weather changes and is somewhat cyclical. How much each of them contributed is the argument. We had a very severe drought for months and the few fisherman who catch wild crawfish are catching fewer, but most of the fisherman that have their own ponds simply pumped water from underground or nearby rivers, canals, bayous. A neighbor is the son of a farmer/retailer and told me that his ponds had no issues and they just pumped more water.

      Born & raised in Louisiana’s our Crawfish, shrimp, crabs and fishing industries have been staples. Unfortunately, the oil and gas industries have harmed much of our coastal areas. We grow excellent rice and yes cotton. It is a hunter’s paradise but our land is dying due to climate changes and pollution. We are loosing miles of coastline annually.

      We actually have a really big economy we just don't get the money for it. Like we got all the petroleum and aluminum but all the accountants and lawyers get paid in Texas and New York. Back in the day our government tried to fight the big companies and now our government just lets them do whatever they want so long as they pay a tiny bit of taxes.
