32:32 Context: Sooner or Later became the awards darling from I'm Breathless/Dick Tracy. The album, that song, and her Oscars performance was the start of Madonna improving her singing, crafting a more mature tonal quality (compared to her first few albums), and showing critics she can handle more vocally demanding material. This improvement in her vocals and the success of Dick Tracy / Sooner or Later would ultimately lead to Madonna playing Evita in 1995 wherein she would win the Golden Globe for her performance. Madonna's improved vocals from extensive training for the role would then set her up to deliver the best vocals of her career on the critical and commercial success, Ray of Light, widely seen as her magnum opus. People like the Oscars performance because she looks glamorous, actually sings live, and it marks the start of Madonna the singer rather than Madonna the dancer.

I think the Sooner or Later fascination is that so many critics until this day rip Madonna apart saying she is only successful for her controversy and can not sing. This was a more serious crowd, being the Oscars and her date for the evening was Michael Jackson. Keep in mind the massive quantity of material Madonna was putting out at this time. Like a Prayer was literally only 1+ years ago, plus a tour, a movie, a soundtrack album with 2 hit singles from the album, a documentary, and a greatest hits album which produced 2 massive singles. Madonna was a daily water cooler discussion. Hard news reported on her, Music news reported on her, daytime talk shows dedicated entire shows to talk about her, universities created classes to analyze her, video channels ran 24 hour Madonnathons on a regular basis, radio played a minimum of 2-3 songs every hour on the hour - I have never seen an artist with as much exposure as she was getting at this point.

The performance of vogue at the MTV awards is beyond groundbreaking if you ask me! Madonna brought theatre, costuming, theming, choreography and so much more into it at a time when most live acts were a mere singer and band in the background. Or a couple of dancers max. With everything she did back then she was truly paving the way for so much of what we see today in the music industry. Also yes she’s lip syncing intentionally! There was no mic or attempt to make it look like it was live. But that was a sort of tribute to the queer ballroom scene and drag culture that she discovered voguing from. She was in drag essentially! Just decades ahead of its time. And I love that you got to see that interview too. just helps put into context how daring she’s always been. Epic reaction as always

I'm sure others will point out similar things but: 1) YOUR REACTIONS ARE SAVING LIVES!! 2) "Justify My Love" was a #1 hit (one of her biggest), which is a testament to how huge she was at the time since it's not very radio-friendly. 3) Another great interview where she talks about a lot of serious issues is MTV's Dinner With Madonna (promoting her documentary). 4) The MTV performance shows off her stage presence and was just iconic in terms of presentation, and "Sooner or Later" is just a great vocal performance and I think fans love it because she's often diminished because of her voice. "Rescue Me" is also one of her best vocal performances - she could have sang the backup singer's part in "Like a Prayer" with that voice!

Great reaction as always. I will focus on Sooner or Later. It was not written by Madonna, but was written by American composer Stephen Sondheim and produced by Madonna and Bill Bottrell, the song was used in the parent film, Dick Tracy.
It would also win an Academy Award.
She sang the song live at the 63rd Annual Academy Awards because it was nominated for an Oscar.
While very different from her other performances since it was not for the mass audience her fans, but for the audience attending the Oscar’s. As a musical artistic chameleon she turned that live performance into perfection for the Oscar’s and is one of my favorite live performances of all time.

There are few facts that made Oscar performance so ICONIC ."She found the time to imitate Monroe’s classic line from “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” by instead declaring, “Talk to me General Schwarzkopf, tell me all about it!” in lieu of invoking Harry Winston’s name. ( He was the man in charge of leading the coalition forces in the Gulf War that started one month before ), we sense less a form of topical reverence and more a question of ethicality in war"
"While there were several other mentions of the Gulf War that evening, it was Madonna’s-while dressed in her eye-catching pinup number-that would become the most memorable and iconic
along with the simple fact that she showed up to the awards ceremony with MICKAEL JACKSON was her date" ( the kiss at the end is for him ).
Another twist of irony she addressed the phrase “A girl can get awfully
awful in the spotlight,” to Kevin Costner ( you have to see Truth or Dare to understand why ) .
Fun fact : you Can see Madonna throwing something to the public at the end of the song.... It was one of her Harry Winston's diamonds earrings ( millions of dollars ) that fell from her ear đŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł. Thank you for your reaction.

Loved your reaction as always. So just a quick little story for ya. The Justify My Love video came out when I was like 14yrs old and I was giving a class presentation at high school on censorship. So little 14 year old gay me decided to take in my VHS copy of Justify My Love and play it to the class as part of the presentation. Needless to say it didn’t go down well and my teacher had a heart attack jumping up and running across the classroom to turn it off less than 1 minute in 😆 lol. I was given a stern talking to afterwards of course.
And just one last point, it’s always important to keep in mind that all of this was at the height of the AIDS epidemic so we were being told that sexuality, sex and particularly queerness were bad and dangerous by the media like every day (not a great thing to be told when you’re discovering your sexuality), which is why Madonna fans can be a little overly fanatical at times because she played such a big part in helping a lot of us survive the 1990s.

QUICK TRIVIA ABOUT THE "Sooner or Later" PERFORMANCE
As you correctly noticed, there is a brief instance in which you can see Madonna's hand trembling. In a later interview, she did confess she was nervous about this performance because she understood the importance and the massive impact it would have on her career, but aside from all that, there was a little incident that nobody knew about, that took place, right before she appeared on stage. Her microphone pole was supposed to telescope from under the stage, and as she was being raised up to the stage, a technical crew guy yelled at her: "You're microphone is not going up!!!!" so in the few LONG seconds Madonna was with he back towards the audience, she was thinking: "I'm going to turn around and there will be no microphone, and then what do I do ???"

WHY THE "Sooner or Later" PERFORMANCE IS CONSIDERED ICONIC:
During this era, Madonna went from "World Super Star" to "MEGA GLOBAL MEDIATIC PHENOMENON ICON". This is era where people in the industry started referring to her as THE QUEEN. At this point she had broken so many industry records and artistic boundaries. The Immaculate Colletction, The Blonde Ambition Tour, The TRUTH OR DARE documentary played in MOVIE THEATERS, the MTV MADONNA Marathon Weekends, Dick Tracy movie and her song nominated for an OSCAR. She was on top of the world.
But in spite of all this success, one area that had not improved much, was that of MUSIC CRITICS. It was as if the more commercial success she had, the worst the reviews would become. "She can't sing", "She can't dance", "She has NO TALENT", "She relies solely on controversy", "She relies on the talents of others.... She could not do a performance all by her self", blah, blah, blah. Those are the kind of things critics would write about her, and up until this point, Madonna had not even been nominated for a Grammy. (She was too controversial and not "classy" enough).
Then, the Oscar nomination came along. The Oscars do not allow the use of playback. As a condition, singers have to sing LIVE; so as you can imagine, the anticipation for this performance was SKY HIGH!!!. Madonna saw this as an opportunity to SHUT THEM UP, decided to perform BY HERSELF (no dancers or back up singers), with a Live Orchestra, singing LIVE a song composed for classical theater and Lo & Behold, she pulled off the vocal performance of a lifetime. This is why this performance is so fervently revered by her fans.

1989-1992 were arguably Madonna's most creative, culture shaping, influential, and button pushing years. There was truly no one like her at the time, and there hasn't been since. Madonna was fighting against so many forces that were trying to hinder various groups within society: women, LGBTQIA+, people of color, anyone who wasn't "Christian", and many others. She put up a mirror to everyone through her music, movies, performances, and videos which made many love her, but also, made many despise her. She was my generation's rebel and hero for self expression and self empowerment.

The Immaculate Collection is Madonna's biggest selling album. It has sold more than 30 million copies, making it one of the biggest selling albums ever, the biggest selling compilation by a solo artist to this day and it went straight to No 1 in Australia going 12 x Platnium in OZ! The Vogue performance at the MTV awards was lip synced but at this time lip syncing was pretty standard. The thing to mention is that you'll NEVER see Madonna perform any of her songs in the same way. You saw her do Vogue one way in the Blonde Ambition Tour, you saw her do it completely different at the MTV Awards and it's performed differently EVERY time it's performed live in a concert or show. This is part of the reason why she is known as the Queen of Reinvention. Not only does she reinvent herself constantly throughout her career, she also reinvents her hit songs at every single concert! The MTV Awards Performance was considered ground breaking because everyone more broadly, other than those who had been to or had seen her concert, got to see her put on a full on show performance. I think it just stunned a lot of people because they had never seen a pop star do this on top of all the cheeky things she did as part of the performance e.g a fair bit of groping, etc. For the Sooner or Later performance at the Academy Awards, she absolutely stole the show and everyone was floored by her live vocals and her Marilyn Munroesque look and performance. Despite all the naysayers and critics, no one could deny any longer that she was legit and incredibly talented as she killed it on the biggest stage in the world! She turned up to this Academy Awards with Michael Jackson as her date! The two biggest pop stars in the world - it was literally headline news! The song from the Dick Tracey movie was nominated for Best Original Song and won the Academy Award. Unfortunately, they only award the songwriter. If they awarded the singer then she would have won an Oscar! Justify My Love was the lead single from the Immaculate Collection album and it reached No 4 in Australia and No 1 in USA. It was a collaboration between Madonna and Lenny Kravitz, who wrote the song together! Like you saw in the interview, MTV refused to air the music video and it was banned. The fact that it was banned only made EVERYONE want to see it even more. The only other music video banned at around that time was I Want Your Sex by George Michael - I think you can detect the theme around what gets a music video banned! Funnily enough, it wasn't banned in Australia. It got an M rating and was screened on Rage on the ABC. Since it was banned they came up with the idea of releasing it as a video single (VHS cassette). Madonna was the first artist to ever release a video single and it went absolutely gangbusters and made her more money than what it would have had they released it via the standard route with MTV! It was priced at a fairly significant premium and as you can guess, the video went to No 1 on the video charts at the time as well and the packaging of the video was deliberately designed to look like a 'dirty/seedy' video haha! I still have my copy of it that I bought when it came out! I think that the TV interview of a major TV network demonstrates perfectly how much controversy Madonna was generating by what she was doing. The music video was super confronting for the time and was considered to be too sexually explicit. The fact that it was about sexual fantasies caused outrage, let alone seeing men and women up close sexually, but also men with men, women with women, men dressed as women, women dressed as men, same sex kissing, simulated sex, references to BDSM, threesomes and group sex. Btw, the super hot guy in the video was Tony Ward, Madonna's model boyfriend at that time. And, the words at the end of the video are "Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another." Rescue Me wasn't actually planned to be released as a single, but because it got lots of airplay it was eventually released as a single but without an official music video. Madonna wrote this song with Shep Pettibone - the guy she wrote Vogue with! I think where you're up to at the moment on your 'Majourney', you're starting to really understand the impact that Madonna has had not just on music but on society in general. Madonna is the OG who has made it possible for women in music today to do what they do. She was the first to break every taboo and to break down every barrier for women and for a whole range of minorities. No female artist or even no artist (male or female) will ever be able to have the same impact as Madonna, because she literally did everything first and with the biggest impact! Finally, since you loved the TV interview so much, you gotta watch In Bed with Madonna, her documentary following her on the Blonde Ambition Tour. It's the last thing you need to do cap of this era and you'll really get to know her from watching that!

Wow. Exciting to see this amazing collection of clips all in one go! Overwhelming in the best possible way!
The reporter who interviewed her sometimes gets some hate but honestly I think he was just playing devil's advocate and respectfully asking the "hard questions" which she fielded like a pro (in her very proper Chanel jacket)
He does a couple more very thoughtful interviews with her in years to come, so I do believe there was some mutual respect going on there.
Thing about the Sooner or Later performance, I think, is the strong vocals, the full orchestra and her captivating stage presence (the Bob Mackie gown and Harry Winston diamonds also a nice touch 😊)
Song won the Oscar that year. Her date for the evening was Michael Jackson so of course their appearance together overshadowed most anything else about the event.
Anyway hard to compare it (apples to apples) to the Vogue performance, which was such a spectacle with a wholly unexpected and unpredictable aesthetic.
Really enjoyed this! Thanks so much!

I’ve been loving your Madonna journey. I became a fan in 8th grade during Like a Prayer and living through this era was incredible. It’s hard to describe just how big Madonna was in culture at this point. There’s just no modern equivalent. It was so fun to witness it all in real time. You’d also enjoy tue Truth or Dare movie, which I see other people are pushing for. I know it’s a lot of content, but it ads so much cultural context. Her career calms down after this, so it won’t always be this way. Great reactions! Cheers!

Oh yes, I have this video single! It has the MTV Vogue performance on the B-side. The interview really is important to watch for anyone who wants to get to know what Madonna stands for. She could still say this, not a lot has changed I guess. I mean she just did this video with Tokisha where she only frenchkisses another girl and its still controversial. You can say whatever you want to say, but Madonna is still a trailblazer. She should get more recognition for her art, not just her behavior or looks. Ah well! In a few years we will look back on this and see how important she still is.

It was hilarious watching the general public freak out like someone molested their paraplegic grandma. To this very day it is the biggest selling music video of all time and this song was a number one smash hit all across the world. What a smart unapologetic and fearless creative genius. You couldn't fuck with her if you tried. She led and everyone else followed in awe and amazement. Line 'em up and knock' em down. A true rebel and peerless pioneer that single-handedly opened the door for so many abused and bullied minorities. Oh and BTW The Immaculate Collection left off so many of her huge hits some of them worldwide number one smash hits from the previous 8 years. The biggest selling greatest hits collection of all time. So them bitches need to bow down in silent reverence and shut the fuck up. J
