    The Bedtime Story video is one of the most expensive in history costing $5M USD back then, which would be $10M USD today or $15M AUD! It's funny that you said, like a dream because that is exactly what it is. She is in a kind of dream state. All the things that you thought were weird and trippy were because the video was based on famous artworks of female surrealists painters bought to life in her dream state. Interestingly the music video was given a theatrical release - it debuted in cinemas! The music video is considered itself to be a piece of art and has been displayed and kept in the Museum of Modern Art (MONA) and other art institutions. Human Nature didn't win any awards, the groundbreaking video of this era was Bedtime Story but the commercial success of this album was Take A Bow - which went to No 1 in the US and stayed there for 7 weeks! - her 11th No 1 song!

    What I love about this era is that after "Secret" and "Take a Bow" did so well, she was like, I'm releasing the songs that interest me the most, not the ones that will be hits. Because it would have been very easy for her to follow up TAB with "Forbidden Love" and then "Don't Stop" (which was already getting airplay in the U.S. completely unsolicited). But she clearly took a chance with "Bedtime Story" (the video is iconic but the song itself flopped and radio was still playing TAB well into the spring/summer of '95) and then she was like fuck it I'm releasing "Human Nature." Her label must have been thrilled. đŸ€Ł Incidentally, "Human Nature" was her last song to chart on the R&B chart until "Popular" this year!

    • @mattvarnish100
      @mattvarnish100 Pƙed rokem +5

      Take A Bow was not that big outside of the US. A relative flop in the UK and Australia, for example, by Madonna standards. It was too saccharine. Bedtime Story was actually the bigger hit in both of those places.

    • @samuelosler1994
      @samuelosler1994 Pƙed rokem +2

      @@mattvarnish100 Take a Bow peaked lower In the UK than Bedtime Story but it sold way more and had higher airplay on BBC radio, I wouldn't call BS a bigger hit in the UK, BS was released when single sales were low too, TAB was released at the peak of singles sales at Christmas in the US, hence it's lower chart peak than BS but higher overall sales

    • @FindingMadonna
      @FindingMadonna Pƙed rokem +1

      @@mattvarnish100 Correct but Madonna's focus was very much on the U.S. after the Erotica era. It's the biggest music market in the world and her home country, and her music in the mid 90s was obviously very much geared toward success in the U.S.

  • @gozzywozzy485

    All four of these videos are superb, and all for different reasons. The biggest crime of this era is that it was not as successful as it deserved to be. I would have loved to have seen more singles come to life from this album. Sanctuary would have been something to behold, and a live duet vid with Me'Shell for IRBYL would have made me geek out as well for sure!

    • @FindingMadonna
      @FindingMadonna Pƙed rokem +1

      Yeah "Forbidden Love" was an obvious choice for a single (she even included it on Something to Remember), but I think she really wanted to do videos for "Bedtime Story" and "Human Nature." And then they wanted to move on to STR so there wasn't much time for a fifth single.

The album was so nominated a Grammy award. So it was not a fop of an album. Erotica was not a flop either selling 7 million albums worldwide and scoring two top 10 hits (erotica and deeper and deeper) even American life in 2003 sold 5 million albums worldwide. 95% of music artist would kill for those album sales

    Four stunning videos, each so perfectly evocative of the song.
    When she was campaigning for the role of Evita, she submitted the "Take a Bow" video, along with a handwritten letter, to the director Alan Parker. It so perfectly showcased her in circa 1940s glam mode, ideal for Eva Peron. That fabulous suit was by John Galliano.
    The dresses she wore performing Secret and Bedtime Story were both by Gianni Versace, for whom she had starred in a gorgeous ad campaign that year.
    Fun fact: that Versace campaign was shot at Mar-a-Lago, which is Donald Trump's home/resort in Florida. Obviously waaay before he was president, but still...ick.

    This was a great Madonna era (among so many other great Madonna eras). Around this time she was campaigning for her part in the movie version of Evita. She had dental work as well to either get or play the part and changed it back after the release. Babyface produced "Take A Bow" (the man singing with her at the AMAs), but I can't remember if he had a hand on other tracks of that album. The "Bedtime Stories" video had a Bjork vibe, who also was a part of the writing team of that track. Love this trip down memory lane. As a fan now and back then, I can mention that it has always a hit or miss when it comes to Madonna's vocals in her live performances. There is, for instance, one really horrible The Power of Goobye performance from the European VMAs 1998 or something or the 1998 VMAs with Lenny Kravitz...In many interviews she said that she found TV performances awkward because she has trouble playing just one song because everything felt like a rehearsal.
    She has a great deal of AMAZING vocal performances too, of course (Drowned World 1998 in some Swedish show??, or Ghosttown 2015 in some French show - which ist breathtaking). Because of some unsatisfatory performances like the 2015 Living for Love BRITs performance, we (and by we I mean "I") have become hyper focussed in her f***** it up, which is terrible.
    As a real fan of the ARTIST I see her journey as the ART and appreciate the whole package and don't let my own journey of her ART being distracted by Sky News/ Murdoch and hate channels on the internet that really don't know her destroy my experience I have with her ART. One of my favorite songs and music videos in the 90’s even as a goth skater punk metalhead outcast, I’m not ashamed to admit that this video was spank bank material because I was healthy with my sexuality

      It's to get avoid CZcams's copyright, etc. Clearly you know NOTHING about the internet. I'm glad you can't watch, you are exactly the type of person I do NOT want on my videos.

    She gets a lot of hate, but her body of work is simply amazing. I was in my late teens when she emerged, and as a gay man I will forever be grateful for all she did to spread awareness and love. As a live performer she is even better, a true genius. Watch her concerts in chronological order and marvel at her progression.
