This takes me back to 1986. This album was a huge worldwide hit. Nearly everyone I knew had it. I listened to it entirely over and over again. There is a reason this is her best selling studio album. It’s pure pop, but strong with great melodies and powerful message. Definitely this took her to the top of the planet. Ps: listen to Where’s the party remix from her album You can dance. It is soooo good!!!!

TRUE BLUE< will always be one of my favorites. Madonna had taken a new more mature direction had great, other writers and producers. The album is pure genious, including the memorable ICONIC cover. I still listen to this CD in my car at age 60. I will also mention (although more controversial, darker and serious), "Like AA Prayer was also another "unforgettable masterpiece! I grew up with Madonna though the years, I have to say personally), the earlier music was gold. Over time, she did "comeback to her roots on "Ray of Light" and Confessions. Now, I think I've outgrown the styles she has primarily selected..

It reminds me of my sister, she was a HUGE Madonna fan, and I remember her listen to her over and over and eventually I got hooked on Madonna too...but first in 1989 when Like A Prayer hit the world with a BANG.... Makes me happy thinking back on those days.. happy days...

You have to keep in mind that back in the 80s albums were still released on vinyl. Meaning there was an A and a B side. This is sometimes important to know to understand the composition of an album and the sequence of the songs. In this case side A ended with the big ballad "Live to Tell" and side B kicked off with the banger "Where's the Party".

And it stayed at number one for 34 consecutive weeks on the European Top 100 albums, longer than any album in history! "Papa Don't Preach " was #01 best selling single Worldwide in 1986 - it was the first time Madonna had the Global Best Selling of the Year (it happened again in 1989 with "Like a Prayer" and in 2000 with "Music"). But better than that in 1986 Madonna also made the Global Year End Singles list with "True Blue" at #04 and "Live To Tell" at #08. By 1989 Guiness World Records recognized "True Blue" as the best selling album worldwide by a female artists (a record that it doesn't hold anymore).
In 1987 "La Isla Bonita" was #03 Best Selling Single of the Year and "Open Your Heart" was #15 (it had its sales split in 1986 and 1987 as the single was released in November 1986).
Addicionally Madonna also had the Global #04 Best Selling Single of 1987 with "Who's That Girl" that song it's on a OST and was released after "La Isla Bonita" that year:

@@a.j.patron9214 Madonna was a global year end #01 again in 1989 with "Like a Prayer" while "Express Yourself" was #09 and "Cherish" #17.
in 2000 "Music" was #01 and "American Pie" #04. "Don't Tell Me" was also #04 but in 2001. In 2005 "Hung Up" was #08 and in 2006 it was again #08 (never was #1 because sales were split into 2 calendar years as it was released im October). In 2006 "Sorry" was also at #04 on Year End Global Chart.
      www.mediatraffic.de/tracks-2006.htm
In US "Hung Up" was #42 on the airplay chart but was 13 weeks at #01 on download songs and Hot Single Sales Chart. Digital sales were still starting in 2005 so didn't even make it to TOP 100 of the decade downloaded songs (as the song didn't stay that long on the chart). "Hung Up" later became #01 Club Play songs of the decade in US (and "Music" was #02 while another 3 Madonna songs were also TOP 20 of the decade!). Madonna was still the #01 physical singles sales artist of the decade in US according to Billboard.

This is one of Madonna's best, most consistent albums along with Like A Prayer, Ray of Light and Rebel Heart. Only two tracks - White Heat and Jimmy Jimmy are weak but all the others are repeatably listenable. Please do more full album reviews, this was nice. Madonna had been criticized for weak vocals in her first two albums so she took singing lessons to learn how to properly project and breathe while singing... you can see the results in Live To Tell and Papa Don't Preach and this album was the first of a more mature sound.

The name of the song White Heat was taken from the movie with the same name which stars James Cagney whose voice you hear in the beginning of the song. It was inspired by that movie and she took the theme of cops and arresting the bad guys/criminals as lyrics for this song. She is the love cop of this song.

True Blue was epic and changed women and music because this is when she took control and did and produced her music. Definitely her happiest funnest album and it catapulted to something the world had never seen before in popularity. Live to tell her best ever. Dave Marah from Billboard said "If it weren't for the massive prejudice against Madonna's over confident display of her sexuality, "Live to Tell" would rank among the greatest pop songs written in the past decade." I remember the time the cold war was at its peak and Prince (Ronnie talk to Russia) and Sting (Russians) recorded anti cold war songs and Madonna said she wanted to her album out before the world blew up. (So funny)

It is so EASY to look at someone else and believe that somehow they are truly happy...we all learn to put on a brave face and say we are alright if we are asked. Everyone holds SOMETHING deep inside, and this song (Live To Tell) brings that fact HAUNTINGLY to life...

Love this album. It’s legendary. But I’ll go out on a limb and say I only ever loved the singles. All the other tracks fell flat for me. Jimmy Jimmy is cringe. Every Madonna album has at least one cringe, and that’s the one. Lol. Still, because each single is legendary it still elevates the album to classic. Live To Tell remains my very favorite Madonna ballad of all time.

It’s awful, total filler. I don’t even think it was fully produced. I think it was a tightened demo. The sound is so boxed in. I get that it fits this eras vibe but it’s just bad.

Dereck, I'm surprised you haven't reacted to any freestyle dance music from the 80's. It was hugely popular in Miami back then. I think you would absolutely go nuts when you tap into that rabbit hole. Try bands like Lime (Angel Eyes) or TKA (Louder than Love, One Way Love) or probably my favorite is Sisley Ferre (Give Me Your Love). Others to check out Sweet Sensation, Cynthia or Stevie B

Yes, Live To Tell is about being strong as a survivor of child abuse or any kind of abuse.
Fyi great job reacting and analyzing her music but you should have ended the Part 1 with Live To Tell because that's how the album's Side 1 ends and Side 2 starts with Where's The Party.
And Where's The Party was performed for the Who's That Girl Tour and for the Blond Ambition Tour.
