He basically let go of his hand because he didn’t wanna be seen as a gay guy holding hands and showing love and affection to another gay guy the way a straight couple would in public and that’s extremely sad.

I feel the same at times. Try not to think about others in public and let go a little. If anything unfriendly happens as a result, just remember that those who ridicule or taunt are angry or unhappy about it and not you.
My best advice is to just stop caring about what other people think. If you can train your mind to not care, you feel so much more free

Listen, if you are gay or lesbian, kiss and love your partner however, wherever you want. There are those of us straight people that don't care or think it's cute, AND it makes people who are anti-gay/love feel awkward and funny inside. Spread the love!

I would say it must vary according to country, state, city (urbanism) and even area/neighbourhood.
Like I live in Europe. I wouldn't try any of that in a predominantly Muslim area, for instance. Not hating on them, it's just most LGBTs I know of don't try that or even go there "flaunting that in their faces".
So I think we should just be careful to know where a person lives first before advising them to just go for it. Better safe than sorry ;)
