Are synthetic vitamins bad for you or not? From my viewpoint, synthetic vitamins should not be taken on a regular basis to support your health.
Taking synthetic vitamin supplements for a short time during a detox is different. I believe taking them regularly for a long period could create some problems.
98% of vitamins sold are made synthetically. Just because synthetic vitamins are similar to natural vitamins doesn’t make them as healthy. Even the actual form of a synthetic vitamin is different from a natural vitamin.
A few main problems with synthetic vitamins:
    • They have a low absorption rate
    • They don’t contain all of the cofactors that come with vitamins in nature
    • They have residual traces of solvents and chemical compounds
    • Synthetic fat-soluble vitamins have some significant potential side effects
    • They can contain additives, preservatives, flavorings, and colorings
Consuming nutrient-dense foods is the best way to get your vitamins and nutrients. But, it can be difficult to find foods that contain all of the nutrients you need.
Natural vitamin supplements have a lot fewer side effects and are much more bioavailable than synthetic supplements. They also come in their natural complexes and don’t contain harmful chemicals, solvents, additives, etc. that could be in synthetic vitamins.
One way to identify a synthetic vitamin supplement is to look at the RDAs on the label. If the RDAs are in very high amounts, you know it’s probably synthetic. In nature, you will see varying degrees of amounts, so if everything across the board is 100%-you know it’s probably a synthetic supplement.
Overall, there can be some pros to certain synthetic vitamins, but there are definitely some cons. Not to mention, there are way more pros when you consume natural whole-food vitamins.
If you can go for the natural vitamins-do it. Even better yet, consume nutrient-dense foods. Check out my other videos for more information about a healthy diet and nutrient-dense foods.

Dr. Berg, you might be interested to know that I recently saw a video which warned diabetics that taking synthetic vitamin C can be very dangerous, even life-threatening, because it can cause your glucose meter to mis-read your glucose level, showing your glucose level to be much higher than it actually is and prompting action that would cause you to become hypoglycemic. Perhaps this is something you could research and report on? Thank you.

I worked for a Salk researcher 20 years ago who was analyzing by HPLC the antioxidants in people’s blood. First he instructed his group to take no vitamins for a month and we got a baseline. Then they took the specific brand of commercial multivitamin for a month and we retested them. The results were rather shocking. Less the 5% increase was average but was worse is a significant percentage of people actually LOST antioxidants, they were worse off. We tested food based vitamins and the results were much better and no one had a decrease in antioxidant potential. However I will say, liquid vitamins did better than pills. All our studies involved about 50 people so this wasn’t a huge sample size. Older people has less absorption than younger. We took a dietary survey of all participants and those with better diets had far more benefits from good quality vitamins than those who had poor diets. I learned that you can’t have vitamins as a stop gap for a crappy diet, more as an enhancement of a good one.
This research changed my perspective and I tossed out all my grocery store vitamins. I only use concentrated superfoods and key targets like minerals and D3K2.

Perhaps I should change my name to the Former Microbiologist Who Sleeps Well. Now I’m following a path more aligned with sharing my herbal knowledge to help others find their own health. I’m contemplating exploring a certification in Functional Medicine and have been accepted at a school though I am not a chiropractor or naturopath. I think Covid just gave me a much needed push to follow my dreams.
I will put me email in my profile in case anyone is interested. A journey to health is very personal and I respect that. Dr Berg gives knowledge but each individual must decide if it’s useful for them or not. And even if it’s not personally useful you can pass it on to another.
Oh an just FYI, the cortisol in patients who had Covid were the highest I ever saw! I’m theorizing that had a direct connection to their outcomes but my experience is anecdotal.

When he's just saying avoid "synthetic" vitamins, en masse, without even specifying which brands, or which specific supplements, without explaining how supposed all-natural vitamins are superior in any way (except some pseudo-chemistry about antioxidants), or how "all-natural" supplements magically have a higher absorption rate, and then starts hawking his own products, you really should be more skeptical and consult your actual d0ctor. The fact he says 98% of supplements on the market are not like his supposedly miraculously superior product that should give you a giant red flag that he's trying to s3ll you a very niche product whose only value lies in the label he slaps on the front of it.

@@MOAB-UT - thanks for the recommendation..much appreciated. I have been eating a predominantly plant based diet for around 10 years already but use a MV supplement on the occasional days that my time is consumed by work commitments etc (or the odd days that I treat myself to some crappy, nutrient devoid comfort food). I’ve been following Mark Hyman for years & even took the liberty of splashing out a bit of hard earned cash, on a few of his books. I’ve studied human physiology/health/diet/nutrition for over 20 years & thought I had gained an excellent knowledge but Hyman opened my eyes to much of the stuff that we just done see in textbooks or hear from western medicine practitioners. My knowledge has 1-2 gaps & I know very little about the differences between synthetic & natural compound or their names & despite my searching, I’ve found very little information that shows us how to determine between the less expensive & potentially harmful synthetic compounds & the more beneficial natural ones. Many of these compounds come in multiple forms & I’d love to know which is good & what to avoid..a simple table with compounds down the LHS & GOOD/BAD, SYNTHETIC/NATURAL headers at the top is all I need but I can’t seem to find anything like this..any links would be hugely appreciated

@@woodstockxx Not sure I can be much help other than to say read The Plant Paradox. It is a really nice compliment to FOOD- what the heck... by Dr. Hyman.
Be wary of labels claiming health and even claims of organic this or that cannot be trusted- it's mostly just marketing speak.
In general, as you know, get your nutrients from high quality foods. Also, check out Dr. Gundry's YES/NO list. In brief, he highly recommends little to no fruit (Fructose) sans some un-ripened bananas, mangos and papayas- in season. He says to eliminate all Whole Grains and to limit or remove Lectins to avoid leaky gut. Gut health is where it's at. His book takes a different approach than most. His focus is more on what to AVOID eating vs. just what superfoods to eat...though he covers both in great detail. He is an MD out of Yale so he is quite credible. He is not big on taking supplements. He has reversed and healed many diseases in his thousands of patients.

High blood pressure- remove all salt, supplement with potassium citrate and foods like avocados.
Speaking from experience- had GERD symptoms bad after an injury and the OTC medication for it is loaded with sodium.
Had to unexpectedly go on HBP tablets for a year and got sent for an urgent heart ultrasound and echo.
Got taken off the HBP meds about 6 months ago and BP back to normal.

@@rachkate76 Your experience is not everyone and you are not an MD- no offense. Generally limiting salt (we need some) is good. I ONLY consumer pink sea salt- no issues with my BP. Avocados are an amazing superfood yes. Green bananas have potassium and are a natural whole food also with fiber since they are high in resistant starch.😀

The best series would be to show healthy food regime for a couple of weeks doc. What to eat every day so that you can satisfy most of vitamin intake. And then what you need to supplement.

Our bodies were designed for a plant based diet. This goes back to the Garden of Eden. Plant based diets are much more nutritious. As for meat, can you trust anything these days? Everything is so full of chemicals. Unless you are eating animal tissue that was raised in an organic way, your health will suffer.

I just saw a video on CZcams about synthetic vitamins. First, the RDA value is/was calculated based on use of synthetic vitamins. Second, the RDA is/was calculated using an animal model (mice). Thus, we basically have NO IDEA how much vitamins is enough or good for a human organism. We don’t really know how much of natural gas. synthetic is necessary… For example, people on carnivore diet don’t develop scurvy… even knowing that they don’t get vit. C with their food… I know that I know nothing! :)
