- Gilbert Arenas EXPOSES The Biggest Flaw In Victor Wembanyama's Game as he and The Gil's Arena Crew react to Alperen Sengun being the lastest person to score their career high on the San Antonio Spur's Rookie and explain how his lackluster perimeter defense skills leaves him susceptible to big nights from opponents like Sengun & Joel Embiid.
Gil’s Arena premieres every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET.

Even if they think he got "locked up" they switched Brooks onto him in the first quarter because Sengun couldn't take him on defense. AND Wemby got into foul trouble early which completely nullified his defensive aggression. I like Gil's Arena, but they clearly didn't watch this game.

He also didn't take a shot in the second half at all. Sengun is great and I wish we had him instead of Primo in 2021 draft but VW was clearly hurt (and still had 7 blocks and has 7 blocks on Sengun this season)

Facts
Stop fouling
People say that Wemby made a block, but if he can't block, he doesn't have an NBA job because a player of this height should be able to block, it will be difficult for him defensively this is very natural the advantage of Wemby is an ordinary player without this height and sengun is right in his comment there is a difference of 1-2 years between them, but sengun really cooked and is quite talented
@@StreetmoneyRae13 he got all ball on one of those fouls lmao why act like NBA refs are good 💀
@@glionn if Wemby couldn’t block he would still be one of the most unique offensive prospects ever with his mobility as a big, so that’s a terrible take. His blocking is simply what gives him an incredibly high floor for his career.
Also “he is an ordinary player without his height” uh ya, virtually every NBA player would be shit without their height. Being uncommonly tall is what lets them be athletes in the first place.
It's so funny how fast the media rips Wemby apart after his first bad game in a long time. He was literally on the injury report before the game and even left before halftime to get retaped. On top of that he was in foul trouble early because of some tickytacky fouls and now we go from "Wemby's gonna be the GOAT defender" to "Wemby has a glaring weakness defensively". Calm down on the narrative hopping...
And just a reminder that a bad game for him is almost a triple double with blocks.
Last week ya was saying he’s the new version of Jesus. Now this. It’s one game. And he’s a rookie.

But he’s literally a rookie. Give him 2-4 years in the league at least. I’m just hoping wemby remembers this and gives it back
Didn't Wemby sprain his ankle in that game? He's out now. You can tell how wildly great a season Wemby is having when one lost matchup to a third year player coming into his own.
Sengun could’ve been that guy his rookie year but coach Silas had sengun strictly as a pick n roll big man
its obvious none of these guys watched the whole game and only watched the highlights, then they would also have seen something was up with Wemby this game. no FG taken in the second half? Early foul trouble? Exit to locker room in the second quarter? Highlights don't cover this. C'mon man. And Gil still bringing up Embiid's 70 (majority on Zach Collins). McCants with the sensible take this time round
they dont watch basketball just like 99% of nba fans. u will never hear context except for people whos job is to actually follow the nba. sengun had like 4 pts on wemby the first 3qt til he got his 4 fouls then he clearly couldnt play physical anymore.
Not even gonna lie, it was bewildering to watch the Spurs not provide ANY sort of help for Wemby who was A) In foul trouble B) Playing through a clear injury (we now find out both his shoulder and ankle were troublesome as he is confirmed out for tomorrow's game).
As a team, they allowed Sengun to continually pressure Wemby deep in the post where he was limited in his abilities due to foul trouble. No help coming from any of his teammates was actually wild to see and confirms everyone's understanding that this Spurs team has the worst defensive IQ in the league. Pop should know better though, so this is even more wild to think about. Regardless, Wemby still had 7 blocks!
Props to Sengun, he looked unstoppable and was smart enough to realize Wemby's foul trouble and strength mismatch by taking it aggressive in the second half. We'll all be looking forward to their rematch 6 days from today on March 12th.
Pop just needs to shut him down for a week

They might be able to rack up blocks and steals but you can move them.... and they csnt do shit about it. The worst person to go agaisnt is the strong hefty player that can still move from side to side well
I found a good comment here :DD Keep it up!! A solid postplayer, that can move well, back you down and got these pump, fake, then either hit or pass kinda games are always annoying. Sengun reminds of just that. He plays with timing, skill and picks his spot or just passes it out. For Sengun specifically, he becomes better the stronger he gets, he is slow but sneaky. He is a package on offense.
People act like Wembanyamas height is going to give him all the edge on defensive but its not. It is way more interesting to see what Wemby will turn into, he could go KD-esque, stay slim and play the 4 or try to gain weight with risking to become an injury prone, risking his form and balance as well. The idea of wemby is great but the hurdle is steep.

it wouldn't matter if wemby knew sengun's playstyle. it indeed boils down to if wemby is strong and stable while guarding or if he can be pushed around. sengun simply were able to push him around and open space for himself. without weby gaining a lot strength, sengun will do the same thing to him again. sengun even tries to charge against jokic and lebron even though he fails. wemby can not possibly stand his ground with that body type.
On ball and help defense are definitely different. Dikembe Mutumbo v Shaq is exhibit a (great point).
Wemby played the second half with a sore ankle. And, his teammates weren''t as dominant as Sengun's. Jalen Green, Fred VanVleet and Cam Whitmore made some of the other Spurs look bad. When you have scoring threats like that, it's hard to figure who to guard the most in the post. Even though players like Vessel and Branham had good point output for the Spurs, their scoring came after the Rockets had pulled ahead convincingly and were just coasting.
.
I'd like to see how Sengun would have done if he had been wearing a Spurs uniform. I'd also like to see how Wemby would look with Jokic's bruisers as his supporting cast.
The real sad point is that Sengun was drafted AFTER Josh Primo a couple of years ago, and that where I'm sure the Spurs wished they had a do-over.
National media's opinions on the Spurs being longer than the actual time they spent watching the game. As a Spurs fan I'm not shocked.

I noticed Sengun start of the season he different real different he that only 1 that aint scared both ends of the court sweet shots just not scared
Wemby only had 10 FGA.
Sengun had 35 FGA.
The Embiid game was completely different. He just couldn't miss a jumper, he was sticking 18 footer after 18 footer in Wemby's face. But most of his shit in the post came against Zach Collins. I think an underrated part of this game was the way Dillon Brooks was wearing Wemby out on the other end of the floor, being really physical and denying Victor position. Completely threw him off his game and then Wemby was getting frustrated and just trying to force his way to the basket and getting stripped by Sengun and Brooks. Just wonder if Sengun is always going to be a terrible matchup for Wemby even when he gets stronger the same way Moses Malone used to bully the shit out of Kareem back in the day.

He's not a rookie at all.
Not like someone coming out of college
@@mufasa2009 sure he played for Parker team for a little bit but he barely got any playing time and Parker himself I would not call a mentor. They talk here and there the way Wemby puts it
@@RealRHernz nope Tony Parker not only mentored him when he was on his team in France once the Spurs got the number one pick Tony Parker prepared him for the draft and life in the states.
Tony Parker has been a massive influence on Wembys life for many years
