That’s at over 30lbs of boost and well over 400hp! If you push it that far and only blow a head gasket that’s incredible. You could do 325-350hp all day with less boost and probably run 350k miles with no problem! Toyota engineering at its finest!!

As a GR Yaris owner. I’m actually surprised it’s even capable of that power. Nearly 500HP is a lot for a car thats roughly 1200 lbs, especially for a hot hatch.

As impressive as it is, as hard as you try to convince yourself that it sounds like a V6 coming from one side of the exhaust, it'll always actually just sound like a 3 cylinder... not great, lol. I have made respect for the engineering, don't get me wrong. Koenigsegg has a bad ass 3 cylinder too, Ford does as well. Ford actually built a small open wheel Gran Prix style car called the Formula Ford, it has a 1 liter Ecoboost 3 cylinder in it and the performance numbers are quite impressive.
With the head gasket getting warped it's safe to say it suffers from what all other 3 cylinder engines suffer from. One of the cylinders is creating more friction and heat
That's the thing might be different know...but at the time there was no off the shelf aftermarket head studs available..as all the head studs aren't the same the studs around cylinder 2 are thicker
It's good to see everyone excited about this car and the next potentially great engine from Toyota. However, commoners like us probably won't get access to it for another 2 years. Also, if this much engineering went into this car, imagine what the new Supra could have been if it were actually made by the people at Toyota who care. Funny, almost like it would've lived up to It's heritage.
They made more then 500hp after lowering psi and putting cams in, and raced laps on Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit, not just a couple of seconds drag strip. Thats stock engine just with cams... bolt ons (intake, intercooler, exhaust, ecu/tune,) no forged crank, pistons, rods ect. (Stock 6 speed/driveline) They just put a stock head gasket back in and tighten new stock headstuds down tigher. So that in a 1200kg or less and 4wd. Thats a track monster. Also HKS was first to crack over 500hp with 100 shot because toyota gave them a free yaris tonplay with.
Why did the headgasket fail ? Because of cylinder bore movement ? It's a known issue on open deck ford engines so a block mod with a bit more clamping force on the head good to push on to 600hp
The fact that this is probably the best tuner car Toyota has ever built, is completely canceled out by the fact that #1 they won't make a lot of them (so demand will always outstrip supply), and #2 if you do manage to find one they'll be way too expensive (either through greedy dealers, or private sellers who "kNoW wHaT tHeY hAvE")
Impressive. I'm making 440 bhp in my '93 Ranger 2.3 Lima. Only 14 psi boost. Why people bother with putting 302 in old Rangers is beyond me. Over 2x the weight and half the power. I have several full size trucks with a 302, but the Ranger is the perfect vessel for a built and boosted 2.3.
I've never looked into it but often wondered why they don't make the engine block & cylinder head with a M/F groove- mating surface machined into them so they intelock into place. Along with a gasket & sealant.

Not to mention, these little motors are sleeved from factory! Toyota has stated that the gr corollas motor is beefier to handle the extra hp, they didnt state exactly what was beefier though.
Can they run a lock wire gasket or are they already? Those are suppose to help with high boost/nitrous but I don’t know much about these newer designs.
