  • This is Britain: Why can’t locals find a home in Margate?
A fixture of our streets, Big Issue vendors know what’s happening in our towns and cities. This is Britain through their eyes.
Recently, our vendors told us that Kent was struggling in the wake of the pandemic and a decade of austerity. We went to investigate.
In Margate, we found a town that feels pretty buoyant. But the culture-based regeneration of the town has left many people behind.
According to a 2021 study by researchers from the London School of Economics, Margate is notable for its “poverty-based polarisation”, with people divided into extremes of wealth and deprivation, and very few in the middle.
Large numbers of people moving to the town from London and elsewhere in the UK have pushed up property prices, leaving many locals struggling to find somewhere to live.
Margate resident Mark Stevenson, who sells The Big Issue in Canterbury, said: "Homelessness is definitely everywhere. Everywhere you look, there’s someone sleeping in some shop doorway.”

Mark is correct. The lack of new housing in the U.K. is a fundamental problem.

Maybe if they didn’t House immigrants there would be homes available for British citizens and less immigrants would want to come here

The government might as well start throwing native British people out on the street and give their homes to foreigners for diversity

Why are there so many Romanians selling the Big issue? We've had the same Romanian woman in our town every Saturday for the past four years. An increasing number of people are convinced she's not genuinely homeless.

Blame the government. This is what they want to cause division and anger but its their fault for not building homes and enforcing austerity.

I moved down to Margate from London in 2021 June my girlfriend had a job already but I was on universal credit but I had a construction licence so finding work was easy I’ve been with lots of different agencies and I got the construction licence threw universal credit I also found a permanent job in December in ramgate with London wages but I think u can only do the construction job if u are dedicated and can keep going but people moving down from London hasn’t got anything to do with the air bnb stuff that’s because people know that lots of people come down to Margate for a weekend away and they need a place to stay I don’t think there bad but I think there should be a limit and I higher percentage of homes/flats

Genuine Question, How does he get from Cliftonville to Canterbury as that's 30 mins on the Train & Canterbury Stn has Gates. The further outside of Margate you get the better generally. a few miles either way. If you can afford to live in Broadstairs then you do, if not then you live in Ramsgate. If you cant afford Ramsgate then Margate it is.

I thought the same thing. He's filmed in the nice part of Cliftonville. That's a trek to Margate station, or a bus ride. Followed by the journey to Canterbury and back. Not cheap.

It is not so much the airbnb but that the Cameron government deliberately killed the private letting market off (in order to increase the number of houses for buyers) by making letting unaffordable for landlords. I have seen what happened with Ipswich: In Ipswich there is no airbnb as it is not a tourist destination. When the Tories started in 2010, there were very affordable Victorian and Edwardian terraced homes everywhere, like something around 450-550 pcm for a 2-3 bedroom property with garden, kitchen and bathroom. On the nestoria site you could find literally hundreds of this sort of properties, and when you walked through town, there were "to let" signs all over the place. About a decade later, there were much fewer of these houses, and they cost around 1000 quid a month, how come the price has about doubled within a decade? Just look up changes in stamp duty and buy to let tax changes with David Cameron.

It's not just the building of housing, but AFFORDABLE housing (which doesn't get sold off), which is very different thing. If new private developments are built in Margate, then the locals will still not be able to afford housing. (Like in London)

Just saw Margate featured in the show Killing Eve. Had no idea there was a homelessness issue there. Not surprised though.
