  • On Nov 9, 2023 I hiked Devil's Kitchen, Spring and Colosseum trails at Ha Ha Tonka State Park. There were some cool caves and rock formations, a nice spring, and serious steps to climb! I hope you enjoy!

I love Ha Ha Tonka. We had a house on the Niangua arm of the lake between 1990 and 2013 and I spent lots of time exploring the park. The rock hopping at Devils Kitchen is a fun challenge. Interesting to see that they roped off the trail under the Natural Bridge. That was not there the last time I visited.

One of my all time favorite hiking locations. I plan to go back this spring and do the castle, the island and whatever else I can get to.

@@OldGuyHikes The island trail is a fun one. It has the balanced rock, a cave that is closed off most times and gets up close to the rapids coming out of the spring pond into the lake. Watch for otters at the head of the mill trough where it splits off from the spring pond. Up at the castle is the quarry trail. The boulder ridge trail is another good one. It takes off on the east side of the road to the spring parking lot.

I misspoke. Boulder Ridge trail is on the west side of the road to the spring parking lot not the east side. I always skipped the trailhead that is near the pit toilets and just walked back through the parking lot and up the road to the trail. Catch it just at the right time and the ditch beside the road is full of wild strawberries. :)
