I totally agree with Madison’s opinion. Goku turning SSJ and Gohan turning SSJ2 for the first time have to be the greatest transformations in DBZ. But this one hit really hard in a different way. It’s the longest transformation ever and it literally caused the whole earth to shake! Not to mention, it’s probably Sean Schemmel’s craziest performance ever as he screamed for more than two minutes straight! That’s also the reason his voice grew a bit hoarse after the epic transformation. At this point, I don’t think this voice actor is a human anymore.
And to think Schemmel did it twice! Because he also voiced Goku in Dragon Ball Kai, and they recorded an entire new dub for it.
You see, you're not dealing with the average voice actor anymore...
I mean, of course he's not human. Sean's just a a 100% Saiyan at this point, obviously. He's Goku!
Fun fact, Sean did not pass out at all during this transformation. He did during Super Saiyan 4.
The music and the symbolizations at 8:11 we get only add to it.
I love how goku says “saiyan”, but when buu says it, he says it how it originally is (japanese) : “saiya-jin”

Something awesome about this scene with Goku going ssj3 is the voice actor for Goku screamed that whole scene nonstop to the point he actually passed out in the booth lol he didn’t stop once and gave it everything he had another reason why this is so iconic ❤

Henry is right. Originally, the VA didn't specify which scream knocked him out. We all kind of assumed it was this one because...well, listen to it.
He later clarified it was a scene in GT.

Can we also appreciate Sean schemmel for incredible voice acting skills. He has put his soul in voicing goku and all of the goku's new transformations, he makes them even better than the sub version. Both in Z and Super, all goku's transformations are incredibly voiced by him. In Z, I love super saiyan 3 transformation and it's voice. And in Super, I love SSB Kaioken×10, and ultra instinct voice. Man I just love this voice actor.

I think the amount of buildup and screaming is what gets people so pumped about SSJ3. You're in anticipation for like a straight 5 minutes lol. Then the music and everything. It's just epic. I always liked that SSJ3 has physical transformations vs just color and lighting. Needless to say, I'm sure you can guess what my favorite one is from that statement lol.

SS3 is an epic form but it has a crippling weakness to it. The form has so much power to it it drains stamina rapidly. The only way the form can work is if you go full power and try to finish off the opponent quickly.

Love how long he yells to transform with that baby segment right before… only goku could train to find the final evolution of super Saiyan, it’s that “to go even further beyond” statement that sends chills… and then the yell… whole scene pumps you up like you bout to break your limits with him.. he didn’t go 3 against vegeta to destroy his pride, he wanted him to believe they were equal again

Super Saiyan 3 is by far my favourite Super Saiyan Transformation. It totally blows all expectations out of the water and to top it all off, makes Goku look like a total beast.

The original transformations have impact because they are narratively relavent. They were built up over the course of the saga and appear at the most fire point to win the day. It's good writing.
This transformation is an asspull because Toriyama needed a way for Goku to hold off Buu. The transformation doesn't do anything else or help in any other way.
It's the exact same as the Grade 2 and 3 forms Vegeta and trunks used in the cell saga. A brute force way to get stronger and ultimately the downsides don't justify it's use.
The music, the screaming, the visuals, everything is just perfect.
I'll often play this scene right before going to the gym, that or the SSJ3 theme. It's so damn good.

Okay, I've said it before, but THIS is my favorite episode. It came out of nowhere when I first started watching DBZ and this entire episode hits so damn hard. The SSJ3 theme music soothes my soul as Goku screams until passing out and ascends even further beyond. (Sean Schemmel supposedly passed out when recording the ssj3 transformation scene. Not sure if that's confirmed or not, but it's badass)

Great reaction! My favorite transformation is Super Saiyan 2. Gohan didn't want to fight, but his fear of losing his friends awakened his potential. Seeing Android 16 die was like watching innocence die. That's why I think Super Saiyan 2 is the best.
Gohan didn't even know who android 16 was until the fight with Cell. His entire reaction to seeing Android 16's head might as well have been, "who the hell are you?" Gohan turning Ss2 because an android he didn't even know died had no buildup or set up to it. It is a cool moment and scene, but it has no narrative set up.

I mean when Cell blew him away it didn’t do it either but a talking metal head pushes you over the edge? Given I watched DBZ in its totality in 2002 I doubt that aging will change anything. In fact a main reason the scene doesn’t work for me is I wasn’t a child watching it seeing myself in Gohan as many younger than me did or do.
He did not change to SSJ3 against Vegita, simply because he did not consider him an enemy anymore. He is Bulma's husband, Trunks' father, so he did not go all out, plus Goku is dead, he doesn't want to influence drastically the world. I think he talked about it in the Cell game arc.

SSJ3 takes up a lot of energy and if his energy drains too fast than he will lose the time to teach Goten, Piccolo and Trunks the fusion.
Goku was probably not sure about how strong Majin Buu actually is compare to Vegeta, plus Vegeta almost always powers up to his maximum, where as Frieza and Cell sort of conceal their true power, so it might have been to costly for Goku to ignore Vegeta and attack Debora and Majin Buu with SSJ3 without knowing their true power or potential. I enjoy the reactions.
In the manga, goku ssj3 is stronger then majin buu. Goku stated he could have beaten fat buu but couldn't beat kid buu

This is one of the greatest episodes of Z ever conceived. Goku is an ultimate BADASS. I'm a huge Future Trunks fan, but Goku has never failed to impress when it comes to showing how powerful he is.

We don't get to see enough of SSJ3 in DB in general. Its a super cool transformation. The very long hair is cool. He didn't do this against Vegeta mostly because he tried to avoid using it because of the time thing I think but against Buu and Babidi, he has to buy time somehow for Trunks.

They seemed pretty evenly matched in this fight Ss3 Goku and Majin Buu. Maybe a full powered kamehameha right off the bat might have beaten Buu.
I mean, I kinda understand why he did. From his POV, he’s dead, he doesn’t live in the living world anymore. So the next time a major threat comes along-and it will, they ALWAYS COME-and he can’t be there, what will his friends and family do then? He wanted them to get ready for that time, get stronger so that they don’t have to rely on a guy who’s dead now.
Still, it’s one thing to leave that up to Gohan, since he was sort of the next in line to inherit the hero mantle from his father. But it’s quite another to leave that up to 2 kids who aren’t even 10 years old yet.

If I'm not mistaken, a normal ssj is 50x stronger than base, and a ssj2 is 100x base, making it twice as powerful as a ssj. And a ssj3 is a whopping 4 times stronger than ssj2 at full power. THAT is how powerful this is.
Correct, but it also absolutely destroys your Energy/Stamina, not too mention just *going into* the transformation almost slices your energy in half to begin with, leaving you with half of what you started with. Hence the basic math of SSJ3: Loss of energy and stamina in exchange for overall speed and raw power….and beautiful hair 😁

Madison asked two great questions at the end of this episode which unfortunately was the downfall in my opinion of this saga. The second half of the Buu Saga had terrible writing.
Probably a hot take, but ssj3 to me is the superior transformation scene. Sure, it didn't have any real build up, but that's what made it a real surprise. Plus ssj3 looks awesome. The lack of eyebrows makes Goku look like a caveman, which fits perfectly with Saiyans connection to apes.

What seals it is that scene how the greate Oozaru transforms its power into little baby Goku, signifying how Goku has reached the pinnacle of his people’s power, how the essence of all that was the legendary Saiyan race is now embodied in him. The last hope of his race.

Super saiyan 3 is by far my most favorite transformation. The built up was insane also how they show the cycles in memory as a little boy and the great ape truly diving deep into kakarots saiyan roots. This transformation makes him look like a wild saiyan and monkey almost. Truly masterful the form really took kakarot to go deep down in his roots and when he says “I’m ready show me what you got “then you hear that tribal siayan soundtrack in the background. Masterpiece scene.
Still get goosebumps from this transformation and theme song.🔥🔥

Same here, I just think it’s so freaking cool how someone like Sean Schemmel can build up the power of the long screaming like that that is so freaking awesome and would seriously make you feel like you would try to do it as well but it’s hard as hell & gotta have the power and energy to scream like that in your lungs to build up, everytime I see this episode it ALWAYS GIVES ME goosebumps bc SSJ3 IS SO DAMN AWESOME

Just goku getting SSJ3 was a huge joke. Vegeta and goku were almost similar power levels when they fought against perfect cell. Vegeta got beaten to the brink of death and then actually died fighting buu and had also trained far harder than goku during cell's death and majin buu's arrival. He just went from ssj1 to ssj2. Goku died and with lesser training went from SSJ1 to 3. I get the show has to bend over backwards to force feed you that goku is stronger but this was beyond lame.
Well the last manga arc actually tells us the real bs reason why Goku is always stronger. I can't wait for anime-only watchers to see it 😂

Long story short, Bardock was on a certain planet and used their dragon balls to make a wish for both of his sons to "thrive" in life. And it came true for both since they both "survived" planet vegeta's destruction, and Raditz was teamed with the planet's prince and was the strongest on Earth when he got there and only lost because he was stupid (and because this is a newer plot point), but ofc Goku is the main character so the wish obviously worked out better for him. Vegeta's reaction to hearing about this wish is hilarious btw since he basically calls out Goku for having a wish help him out throughout life
So Goku literally has the ultimate plot armor in anime
for me it truely has to be this bruce falcolner company ost that makes it so epic, not only the charge up song but the song that plays after really give the feel of how serious he is.
I remember watching this for the first time when the first time this aired on toonami back when I was in elementary school. It honestly stood the test of time because I still get goosebumps. Be sure to show her the SSJ3 transformation in fusion reborn as well, it's better than this one to be honest.
Honestly, as iconic and famous as it is, Super Saiyan 3 fundamentally lacks any sort of intriguing series’s tie-in. It comes out of nowhere and makes Goku a retroactive a liar that’ll lead to unnecessary death and destruction. Why do I say that? Well, after Super Saiyan 3 is introduced, all of these panels are now lies.
