    Let me know if you guys think I should clean up the poll. I couldn’t make up my mind so I just left it for now. I would have to remove a fair bit of material to grind it flat again and polish it, but I suppose I could just chamfer the edges-whaddya think? 👇

      The patina is perfect, and the mushrooming so minimal, I say leave as is. What a beauty!!!

    • @72dodge340
      @72dodge340 Před 2 lety

      I'd leave it. Shows it's honesty as a wall hanger. I mean, not a wall hanger.

      No metal flaking off and rolled over or cracking

    Beautiful! I would leave the slight mushrooming on the poll. The nice thing about a wall hanger is you always know where it is when you need to chop something.

    I knew it wasn't going to last on the wall for long. Turned out beautiful and I love the nod to the Danger Zone.

    That looks so good! Really neat to have found a locally-forged vintage axe. It’s funny, the not-using part is the most challenging in making a wall hanger. Not sure how anyone could resist using such a beauty, especially after you put so much work into its alignment and profile. I’m sure you’ll take good care of it. Enjoy your weekend👍

      I’m happy with how it came out. I agree about swinging the axe. I don’t think there’s any axe I wouldn’t swing. One of these days we should set up a chopping day. Enjoy the long weekend, brother.

    68. Got one fancy bicycle. I hang it on the wall in the Living Room as art. I take it down and pump the tires. I ride it.
    Collector stuff, like cast iron pans or axes, bicycles...give them away to be used or use them yourself. Turned into a world of old collectors, hanging history on walls and not giving to the young - we have You Tube videos for that! - let them eat YT videos.

  • @MatthewAmsbaugh
    @MatthewAmsbaugh Před 2 lety

    Haha. Didn’t last to long on the wall! Nice to see it worked. Definitely a cool piece. I can’t offer much on the history of it, but I’ll offer my opinion on bevels. Keep them small and lightly use the axe. If you need more edge protection, add a little more bevel. If you plan of chopping through knots or limbing, might be a good idea to add a bit more. Other than that, it wildly depends on the quality of the steel and the wood your chopping. There is no one size fits all.

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience  Před 2 lety

      My experience exactly. I worry that we all have too many axes to truly run these girls through a variety of species in different conditions to really be able to have a definitive opinion. But my experience is small secondary = rolled edge.

    Nice job Kevin, I know this video isnt about hafting if ax handles but...that hang and french curve handle looks spectacular. My soul is soothed not seeing any metal ring wedges pounded in there. Its a tough one as to whether you grind off rhe mushroomed pol, its destroys that beautiful patina but on the other hand when we ax nuts see a mushroomed pol, we know the ax has been in the hands of someone who shouldn't have touched the damn thing. Its nit too bad leaving it the way it is, is just fine. I'd only grind on it if the face of the pol is messed up...i.e someone drove star post into the ground with it or something. Either way you have done right to that ax. Like your grinder too. Well done.

      @KevinsDisobedience  Před 2 lety +1

      If you want to see me hang the axe it’s on my channel. Two vids back. I like those barrel wedges, but on a big eye (especially a wall hanger) that would be a crime. Thanks man.

    I applaud the work you put in on the polish.
    I wouldn't do it myself, it's too tedious and I don't have the patience to do it. Just like with stitching, anybody that can do it you have my respect, because I will just glue and rivet.

    Thanks for sharing the process. I wonder if the gumming is caused by the resin/adhesive and steel residue? You made a beauty axe and your "wax on wax off" polishing turned out great buddy!

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience  Před 2 lety

      I’m not sure. As I said I don’t do it often, I just assumed it was the steel gumming up, but makes sense it might be mixing with the glue.

      Thanks bud, good to see ya hear. I’ve enjoyed your vids a lot. You run a nice and tiddy operation. Much the way I run my contracting company, but I’ve only been on my own for the last ten years. As you well know, much more money doing it yourself than working for somebody else. Now I can hire guys to do a lot of the work I used to do myself. Clear you know your shit. Keep posting. Thanks

    You keep making more and more beautiful axes! Such a nice build! I normally blend my micro bevels in with a stone to make a micro convex edge. I think it really does depend of how the steel quality and temper/hardening is in regards to what you can get away with. Some axes you can just get lucky with

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience  Před 2 lety

      I often do that as well over time. The steel and the wood definitely play a roll.

      Most of the edge sits at 17.5 and on the few other axes I took that low the edge just crumbled. So I didn’t have high hopes for this one, but so far so good.
