Their first 3 games they were down by like 6 points with minutes to go and were bailed out by the 1 and 1 free throw rule. They'd just foul and the other team would miss the first free throw every time.

Back then the 1st round West Region late games started at 10:30 PM CT. Pepperdine vs NC State was the late Fri night game. I stuck with game in 2nd half even though it seemed like Pepperdine had game clinched. But late missed free throws due to Valvano's foul strategy and somehow NC State escaped in Double OT.

If I could pick one center for my team it would have to be Hakeem, Sorry Russ and Wilt. BUT he would have to get control of his emotions and temper first. It's very rare to have a center, or a player that could do all of the things he could do. The only thing he didn't do was bring the ball up. Still the biggest upset in men's NCAA basketball history. Someone I knew back then who handled a book said the mere 7.5 point spread to Houston's favor was manufactured because a true spread of closer to 12 or 14 would have had too much money being placed on NC State. They had to do something to balance out the wagering. But, I will agree with many who have said a shot clock back then would have worked heavily to the advantage of Houston. But, then again, you didn't have the 3 point shot which appears would have favored NC State, especially late in the second half. Just a great game!

I was pulling for the Orange that night (my freshman year in HS), but they were their own worst enemy! The charity stripe did them in just as it did Houston in '83! • @GeorgeWolfeIV-ir6de

Because, the clock was running and Houston tried to call timeout before the clock hits zero, but it didn’t matter.

Nc state was so lucky to win that game Houston was by far the better team if they would have played say a 5 game series Houston would have won the series 4 games go 1

You could argue that if they played a 10-game series, Houston would have won 9-1, but that's the beauty of the NCAA Tournament.

If there was a shot clock, Houston wins by 30. How could a team with Olajuwon and Drexler( two future NBA all stars, champions, and Hall of Famers lose to an NC State team with average talent?
