  • Jim Valvano was known for his inspirational speeches, and on February 21st, 1993 he might have delivered his most inspirational. At a ceremony to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Wolfpack winning the National Championship, Valvano addressed the team and crowd of Wolfpack fans. Hear his emotional speech right here, where the legendary coach sums up the Cardiac Pack team of 1983 as "... a team that inspired others to do unimaginable things."

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic conference in the United States in which its fifteen member universities compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA's) Division I, with its football teams competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest levels for athletic competition in US-based collegiate sports. The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions' athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of national championships in multiple sports throughout the conference's history. Generally, the ACC's top athletes and teams in any particular sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. The ACC is considered to be one of the six collegiate power conferences, all of which enjoy extensive media coverage and automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC will be one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an "access bowl", the successors to the BCS.
Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, by seven universities located in the South Atlantic States, the conference added additional members in late 1953, 1979, 1991, 2004, and 2013. The 2004 and 2013 additions extended the conference's footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, and Syracuse University. In 2012, the University of Maryland's Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference. On November 28, 2012, the ACC's Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland.

Yes it was a Duke game. Jimmy and Coach K were friends and coached against eachother, but they formed a bond the last year of Jimmy's life. Jimmy V. was being treated at Duke Medical Center and the day he was called home, his family called Coach K who was at his office next to Cameron Stadium. Jimmy's wife said, "it's time Mike, he's going". Coach K sprinted out of his office and across campus to the Medical Center and got there in time to see his friend pass from this world. Sports are great and we enjoy watching and rooting for our teams, but it's the love and devotion and respect that should be exercised between those you compete against, these two men are world class and that is at their core. Thanks for posting this, he was a great coach and a terrific inspiration to so very many!

This 1983 N.C. St Basketball team was the greatest thing ever to happen to college sports. How a man had ordinary people, do extraordinary things. It moves me that Derrick Whittenburg, Sidney Lowe, Lorenzo Charles (When he was alive) and other players would drive out to the cemetery to visit Jim Volvano's grave and put flowers on it. The impact that he had on these young men is amazing. What this team accomplished is more than David slaying Goliath. The last 10 games of the season was just unreal and everyone should watch them. This team had double digits losses on the season when they were invited to the "dance" (NCAA TOURNAMENT).

In many ways, Jimmy V was Nick Fury, and the 83 Wolfpack were the Avengers.
Alone, it is unlikely any of them would have done it.
But assemble the team together, and all of a sudden great things can happen with a little bit of nerve.

In 1993, NC State wasn't really a major player in the ACC or NCAA. Duke was an unstoppable juggernaut those years, and the Wolfpack faced them in the game right after this speech. You have never seen a team more motivated, more determined, more driven, than the Wolfpack that night. In the end, it wasn't enough and Duke won the game, but I'll say this - the Wolfpack left NOTHING in the locker room that night. We showed them our heart and made Duke earn that W.

This dude JIMMY VALVANO IS MORE BEAUTIFUL than any woman I have ever encountered. Everytime I watch this I cannot stop weeping, this is what sports is really all about, and that is because it defeats that thing that is stronger than cancer that we deal with everyday........and that is racism.....Sports can defeat any disease known to man, I know, I played with players from all races, and at 1st there is fear, then competition , then comraderie , then family, then respect and finally ........LOVE ! YES LOVE !!!! THE LOVE THAT NEVER DIES because you earned it, and earned love never ever dies, never! That is why those who came before us were able to stay together because when love dimed , respect took over and they continued, did you ? Anyway this is LOVE because its earned !

The death of NC State basketball was the day they hung Coach out to dry. Coach was willing to coach for $1 to make things right. He was not afforded that chance. Why a UNC guy was in charge of NC State athletics at the time (Todd Turner) is beyond mind boggling and he was the one who was not willing to come to the defense of Coach. The Personal Fouls book has now been proven to be bottom of the bird cage trash and ultimately NC State's lack of resilience to back their coach is now why they are a pathetic has been. Their current coach has 1 ACC Tournament win in 6 years and the team has played in TWO Sweet 16s in 30 years. Weep for lost glory, but it was self inflicted.

Houston lost that game themselves. It was before they had the shot clock, and Houston had a big lead with 8 minutes left and were a scoring machine (Phi Slama Jama). They decided to stall with 8 minutes left and it was the dumbest idea ever. It was like they wanted to give the game away.
