  • It’s a controversial topic for the purists among us, however the fact remains that there’s a large number of people out there who want the lumpy idle associated with a large cam profile, without the associated downsides of fuel consumption and driveability.
In this webinar we’ll look at the ‘ghost cam’ technique that offers a similar lumpy idle without the expense of a physical cam upgrade.
For the lesson we’ll be using the HP Tuners software coupled with a LS2 6.0 litre V8. As always though, the vehicle and ECU is just used for demonstration (we have to use something 😉 ) and the knowledge shared will apply to more than just this specific combination.
Due to the current global situation we though over the next few weeks we'd help keep you guys out there entertained and release some of these Gold Membership webinars to you for FREE to help pass the time.

I have learned so much from these videos. I have been able to follow these basic principles to tune my holley sniper efi to chop. Typically good idle is 18° adv so I took 4 blocks around idle and set timing to 4 degrees. Set iac on fast and disable learning below 1000 rpm. Set idle to 650 and it chops but above 650 the chop is gone and car drives perfectly normal.

can you give any advice on designing a cam tune for a catted setup? how aggressive with the values and how to fail safe with using the cat converter temp as a variable to return it to normal idol? thanks man! just sarted tuning, looking at the course

If you add a stall converter, does that allow you to alter the drive table too without affecting driveability? As it won't push on the brakes.

I have a comp cams 274 cam in my little 5.7L Hemi and it idles smooth. I was considering this "trick" since the cam does not have much overlap but with my Whipple supercharger I really don't want to mess with timing.

Have a 2011 Ctsv with the lsa, was curious to see how this would sound but i dont seem to have that spark overspeed/underspeed modifier table under my spark tab. Only able to set the target idle speed in p/n and in gear as well as for different ECT temperatures. Any help?
*EDIT If anyone else is having this issue where you dont see that parameters in your personal vehicle that are being shown in the video above, in vcm editor hit, "Edit" in the upper menu bar, then View then change it from basic to advance... Should solve the issue..

Hi Andre, I have a fgx xr6t with 440rwkw on a dynapack hub dyno. Since changing my wastegate spring from a 7psi to a 14psi one and putting in a turbo side intake and getting tuner to ramp the gt3582r in as hard as it can to 17-18 psi it has developed a bad boost oscillating problem. It only really does it when I accelerate in 3rd 4th 5th from 3000rpm or lower. It doesn't seem to do it when accelerating away from higher revs. It does it more under load from lower revs. The falcon boost control seems very complicated and my tuner hasn't been able to fix it. Have you got any tips? It's on hp tuners.

another good video Andre and HPA team on a subject that i had no idea existed...guys i know would just swap an aggressive/loppy cam in and make it behave with tuning or just live with whatever it does. i have a small block Ford 427 with a .600 lift cam and 114° lobe separation (i forgot the duration but i can get it for you) and while driving it surges at low rpms anything below 1600 with light throttle. i think the PCM is in the overrun areas where the fuel is minimum, but my tuner mentioned the surging being from the nature of a big cam. what do you think?

Most "cam" videos on CZcams use the "ghost cam" to make any cam sound more aggressive. I installed a Comp stage 2 HRT in a Charger and could barely hear a difference at idle. However, the vids online show serious chop.

I'm Not Sure If You Figured This Out Yet. But It Might Be Because Your Idle Speed Is Higher Then The Other Chargers. Usually If You Put A Cam In And You Want It To Chop And Lope More You Can Lower Your Idle RPM. I Had To Do This To My 3.8 V6 Monte Carlo When I Put A Cam. Lol I Was Devastated When It Didn't Lope After I Installed It haha. Then The Tuner Lowered Idle RPM And I Was Smiling Ear To Ear haha

You said not changing the ‘in gear’ is going to keep drivability, so does doing this reduce drivability? ie if you did this to the in gear table. If so what affect does it have?

    • @TheAprilChicken

If you changed the in gear idle it would surge around and deliver power very unevenly when idling around in parking lots etc.

Is it true you cant do it to the barra engines with hptuners becuse HPtuners doesnt have independent cam timing control unlike pcmtec?

    • @hpa101
      @hpa101  Před 2 měsíci

That is not something I have come across, but I do know not all 'Barras' are the same. The engine was made for a long time and there are variations.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was something PCMTec did in that space that HP Tuners didn't for exactly the same engine, just as I wouldn't be surprised if they were actually almost the same. It varies so much between different applications you can't know till you know, as dumb as that sounds.
Check with HP Tuners directly is my advice, and/or on their forum which might be quicker.
We are hoping to add a PCMTec based Ford example in the future 😎 - Taz.

It is as far into the 'aesthetic' tuning world we will go though and it was chosen by popular request.

I know you say this is controversial. And it is. It's the dumbest thing to want in a tune. Here we are trying to smooth up huge lift cams and idiots want to make it sound like they have one lol.
Being able to change cam timing is a great way to add some mid range and even economy but top end is usually not that impressive of a gain. Get that exhaust shut and intake open earlier at low revs for torque by limiting reversion but keep the inlet open later higher in the revs for top end by getting better cylinder fill! Also keeping the exhaust open for longer helps scavenging and is used on modern cars as a way to perform EGR at cruise. READ AS Lost Torque at Cruise!
