  • Today we'll replace the trottle cable bushing where the throttle cable connects to the accelerator pedal assembly. This is a small but critical part that can leave you stranded if it fails.

    USCG Mark, thank you so much!!! on Monday, April 1 the Z left me stranded in Wilmington and it took 3 1/2 hours to make it back with a tow truck. Could not get the car in the shop until April 15. I took a chance and ordered a throttle bushing using your screen shot of the part # for $5.75 from Amazon on April 2. part came today I took the cover off and lo and behold, guess what? throttle bushing missing!! The throttle cable bushing on my 1999 Z3 broke and I was stranded at an intersection. No fun. Eventually got the car towed home and repaired the throttle bushing. So, being proactive, I decided to replace the throttle cable bushing on my 2001 Z3 to avoid a repeat breakdown. But to my surprise, the 2001 does not use a throttle cable or bushing. Instead, it uses an electrically controlled throttle reostat mechanism to control throttle movement, much more complicated and expensive, but I'm not sure it's any more reliable.

    • @MomentofZed
      @MomentofZed  Před 11 měsíci

      That is very interesting! Hadn't heard that from anyone yet. Now that is all cars of course. My mazda is that way. On the old one you could repair with a cable tie in an emergency. Dont know what to do with a bad reostat.

    The tool worked like a charm and so did your instructions! It was the exact same issue for my 1997 Z3 as for yours. I also replaced the bushings (following your instructional video as well) and has the code light up. It turned out that there WAS a loose connector under the passenger seat, but the light wouldn’t turn off, regardless. Less than a minute with the reset tool and everybody in the house is happy again. After three brief attempts to replace the grommet in 110+ degree heat, I threw in the towel and took the car to a local mechanic (I temporarily secured the linkage with a paperclip). Mind you, I'm 75 with some serious physical issues, and contorting myself into that footwell nearly trapped me for life (just kidding, but it was challenging extracting myself after one of the attempts). What I couldn't do, Mike, the mechanic did in five minutes. And what he knew, that I didn't, was that once you remove the panel under the steering wheel, there is another underlying panel. With an extension on his socket wrench, he was able to reach the deeply seated bolts on that underlying panel and remove it, providing significantly more room to more easily maneuver around in the footwell to insert the grommet and reattach the linkage. My BMW is the convertible, if that makes any difference.@@MomentofZed

  • @Bmwstephen
    @Bmwstephen Před 10 měsíci +1

    Not sure if this is a z3 thing but on an e36 The hook of the cable should be entering from left side of the grommet, exiting the right side (not the right to left position like in your video)
