- Whilst staying in Marmaris we took a day trip to Rhodes/Rodos, Greece on the ferry to visit the stunning old town. Please help out a growing channel by giving this vlog a like and consider subscribing as we have a BIG trip coming up!
Rhodes town is absolutely beautiful and a trip you should not miss! The statue of Colossus once stood proudly in the harbour which was known to be one of the 7 Ancient wonders of the world.
On this episode we will show you our favourite restaurant, where you can drink cheaply and also what there is to see around the old town. Are you ready to explore?
Just to add that you can pay by card on Barkas if you don't have any cash. We highly recommend getting a travel card such as Starling or Revolut as we use it everywhere and it saves having to carry cash.

I was in Rhodes this October. Right after my arrival I spoke to some local people and they said: Never eat in the Old Town of Rhodes. If you go outside the Old Town you'll get much better, authentic food and for less money. And they were right...

Did they overcharge you Stuey? We're always very careful when it comes to offers and make sure they know exactly which we mean when we order. Don't get us wrong we've had places elsewhere in the world try and pull a fast one but we've made sure it's been corrected as we can't stand it when places try and diddle us. Sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience.

@@wescooley34 Whaaaaaat!!! That's enough to make anyone weep. Sounds like that was a real set up...but if you're in that situation with eyes on you then I guess there's little you can do. We got done over on one of the trips to Rhodes years ago for a medium boot of beer when I asked for the one in a glass. I got bored of arguing on that particular visit. You definitely live and learn
Been to Rhodes 4 times, done the old town about 10 times on those visits, always get lost, always love it!!!🤣😂👍👍🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷❣❣

Hey John! Santorini won't be ready for quite a few weeks yet so I'm not sure if you'll catch it before you go. We've still got to edit Istanbul, the trio of local islands to Santorini (Naxos, Paros and Ios) and then Santorini itself. Basically, it's the 3rd vlog waiting to go on the bench for editing. We've been to Mykonos before but haven't filmed there. It's as expensive (if not slightly more) as Santorini though. Athens is a place we want to get out of as soon as we arrive, Piraeus where the port is located is a sketchy area so be careful down there. We were recommended not to go out after dark when we stayed in Piraeus itself a number of years ago. Fingers crossed you'll catch Santorini but if we can help with anything in the meantime then drop us a message on our Facebook or Instagram and we'll do our best to help you out. No visa is needed before you travel. Rhodes has its own unique beauty, however, we could travel Greece for months and still find islands that we'd class as hidden gems. Istanbul is crazy busy but also the tale of 2 continents accessible by a footbridge. I don't know anywhere else that you can be in Europe then cross a bridge over the river and you are in Asia. That was so funny the food looked fabulous well priced. How many cocktails did becky have 2 or 22. You looked like you had a great time.
Haha! She had 2 but they were strong and we hadn't eaten so far that day so it hit her like a ton of bricks. Spent the next 2 hours sobering her up - it was almost like our Philippines throwback vlog all over again. We always enjoy Rhodes as its absolutely stunning and well worth a visit

Hey Scott. This was a couple of years ago but glad you've still found it useful. We actually didn't know if we could continue filming as the cocktails hit Becky harder than we thought. As we were only there for the day we continued anyway as we knew we couldn't re-do it and somehow pulled it off 😆. We love Rhodes old town, spent many an hour wandering the streets there. Next time out there, will definately have try that mixed grill, looked fantastic! We too have used Mares Travel for excursions and can highly recommend.

Ey up Kezza! Not stayed in Pefkos but a friend of mine did last year and she enjoyed it. It's a pretty chilled and quiet resort but also possible to walk to Rhodes town along the coast apparently. Greece holds a special place in our hearts and we're really jealous you're going and we're not. We're going to a wedding in Italy in September and then it's preparing for 'Destination Unknown'. Greek measures with no food meant those cocktails hit Becky hard. She was a bit better after we'd eaten though xx

Hi... Just to say...took your advice from watching your video a few weeks ago... We have just been to visit the Hermes restaurant a day or so ago..... We got the Mixed Grill to share for two...
Superb and washed down with a couple of pints .
Good value and my wife who would normally struggle with the amount of food... amazed me by almost managing her share ... She commented on how easy it was to eat ..and reckoned it was because there seemed to be little or no greasiness to the meat served..
Could recommend to anyone who likes a good mixed Grill..or normally likes Kebabs .. well done on providing a great review 👍
Hey Alan! Thanks for letting us know. We only recommend places we've eaten ourselves and if it passes our test then it's fair play. We normally don't tell them until the end either so it doesn't change what they do. We'd been to Hermes a couple of times on previous trips so we knew we wanted to show them off. Hopefully we get a baseball cap next time! We could really smash a mixed grill right now but it's some pizza's instead from a local takeaway back home in Leeds. It's creeping up there Peter, but like any tourist hotspot it's to be expected. This is why we spend our valuable time hunting for the bargains for people. I'm not sure of the prices for 2023 but if it's anything like we've experienced over South East Asia and India it's bound to have increased. Greece has never been a budget destination but the food can be fantastic!

We've been going to Hermes for a couple of years when we've popped over to Rhodes as it's a budget friendly gem in an expensive area. We spend a lot of time researching and trying places before we decide if we film them or not. If it's not good enough for us or to be associated with our name then it doesn't make the cut.
Great choices for the trip in Rhodes old town. Next stop could be in one of the greatest restaurant (for me at least) stavlos . You'll find tasty souvlaki and steaks of course. Need to try it . Cheers from a greek lady .

I went in Rhodes one week in August, I fall in love with this place, the food are great and the people are very nice, friendly and definitely I'll get back. Hypocampus taverna was the best place to eat and listen greek music live. ❤

Island Lipsi restaurant ( the place you got the flyer for) is one of the nicest places in Rhodes to eat. Amazing food and service.

Hey Jason. I've only ever stayed in Faliraki in Rhodes many years ago. A lot of people like Pefkos (walkable to/from Rhodes town if you don't mind doing that) or the village of Afandou for their laid back vibe. I arrived home to Sweden 2 weeks ago after a 2 weeks vacation in Rhodes.
I was dissapointed about the high prices(pretty much the same as in Sweden) and did not know there are restaurants with beers for €2!
Hope it will remain to my next visit in Rhodes.
Hey Patric! Everywhere has gone up in price recently and Greece is no exception. Our latest vlogs of island hopping and Santorini (coming tomorrow) were filmed in May and it's hard to find deals without cutting corners. hello john and becky. just came back from a wonderfull holiday in marmaris. last tuesday we took the boat to Rhodes. offcourse we went to eat at Hermes. the old man came to us, for order food. i said to him. Greetings from john and becky. the man smiled , thumbs up, and said ,,efcharisto. The food was good.

@@ParksTravelGuide after eating at Hermes,we went further. a man asked us to sit down and eat at his place. we said,, no we just had food. the man asked where we had our food. at Hermes we said. the man said. no it is to high at prices. hahaha we had a few drinks and food at hermes ( 3 Lady,s) i paid for us 28 euro,s. food was good and the price was also good. at hermes. no complaines
Glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately our vlog has made Hermes very popular (which wasn't the intention) and a lot of other restaurant owners are a bit jealous of that it seems. We know we would be!

Been there 7 days ago, can attest the service is fantastic, 26euro gets you the meal for 2 and 2 drinks. In all that I also got a comprehensive course in greek :) Money well spent! Rhodes for the win!

We've always gone for the mixed grill with a Greek salad but have also had the Gyros once. Cheapest beer in Rhodes town and it's a decent pint too in all fairness. It's a great family who will happily recommend you their best gear depending what you fancy...the village sausage is a belter. Be sure to say Hi to them from us if you go!

We were in Rhodes Old Town today - our lunch cost a fair bit more than yours did though!
It's generally an expensive town Andrew. We always try and do our research before we go somewhere as money is generally tight. If you decide to return make sure you check it out though!

Me again! Would you recommend getting your booze and cig allowance in Rhodes or Marmaris?
You can only bring back 200 per person from Rhodes and customs are very hot on checking, but they are incredibly cheap. You can then buy another 200 on arriving back in Marmaris as part of your allowance. Much cheaper in Rhodes though!
What was the bar called with the cheap drinks, going to Rhodes in 11 days and would love to check it out!
Hey Adam. If you mean the potent cocktails we believe it's called Afroditi Venus at the top of the main street. There are a few all competing with each other price wise and the street is called Orpheus. You'll probably recognise it when you see it as it's literally on the junction. Hope it helps!

Usually a couple of days in advance minimum as the ferry can get very busy. If you WhatsApp, Facebook message or email Mares Tours they will be able to advise you of availability. Ideally as far ahead as you can manage

Hey Marcin! Definitely a trip to Lindos! We are hoping to visit Rhodes towards the end of our current 6 month Asia trip and film it. The old town is lovely too. If you get bored you can take the fast ferry to Marmaris for the day (we came from there on a day trip to Rhodes to film this vlog).
This was a lovely video! My partner and I are visiting Rhodes town/Faliraki for a week in October (not high season, but according to my research most places should still be open except clubs, which I am too old for anyway).
Are there any restaurants (we are big meat lovers, my partner loves hamburgers fyi) or places that you know of, which we MUST visit during our stay? :)
Hey Emilia. It's been many years since I was in Faliraki (2002 if I remember correctly) so I can't speak much for the resort, although its less rowdy than it was during it's prime as a raucous 18-30's area. October is the last month of the season and you'll probably find a few places closed after the majority of the tourists leave at the end of September. As for restaurants we only ever eat at Hermes when we are in Rhodes town, purely for the price and also the quality. If you have a look at TripAdvisor you'll probably find some good recommendations, but as always take take them with a pinch of salt because some people give a 5* rating if a waiter makes a fuss of them. You know, locals still go out for coffee, dinner or lunch they go nightclubbing and have fun in general while most of the tourists are gone! So don't worry about anything! Just enjoy your staying there. And a tip from a greek: Feel free to use your hands when eating grilled meat (souvlaki, chops,stakes, fries etc). It is tastier that way and wont'get any strange look from arround because that means you 're enjoying your food! And that makes people happy to see! Ya sou!

Guys where would you recommend to purchase lira from in Marmaris? Iv never withdrew money from ATMs over there as iv been concerned about the charges. Any help is appreciated and thanks for a great video, we might even try the trip to rhodes ourselves next week and will definitely be using the recommendations of the excursion company you have mentioned as iv already had a look on the website. Hey Matt. There are several change places dotted around and we've never heard of any issues. We use the one on the main roundabout by the bazaar which is next to a tourist shop. You can't miss it when you are down there. Obviously work out beforehand what you should be getting by looking at the rate so you can't be swindled. We used our Revolut card over there for purchases and also to withdraw cash free from ATM's (although some did charge but Halk Bank was free). We're glad you've gained a lot of information and we hope you have a great time!

That's the area you'll be staying in Ivan and is the 'touristy' end. So yes, we were there every day! Haha.
I can't believe that they'd been to Rhodes previously but never walked down the Street Of The Knights!!! It's awesome, I've seen people open mouthed at the sight of it from the bottom of the street. If you go don't miss it. By the way the Colossus collapsed in an earthquake.
We realised Dave, although 2 different websites clearly lied to us, but we've held our hands up. Our visits to Rhodes have been rushed to say the least but at some point we want a stay somewhere on the island where we can visit Lindos. We love Greece so much it's always hard for us where to go next!

@@hpthelegend If we struggle then we use TripAdvisor to search and rank them. Unfortunately that's open to abuse though as some people will give 5* if the food is poor but the waiters make a fuss of them.
When you buy stuff in Rhodes, is it normal to bargain about the price?
Hey. It's not really part of the Greek culture as most items show a fixed price in shops, but those prices can vary too depending on if you are on a main tourist traffic path compared to somewhere a few streets back. In our eyes if there's a price tag then we accept it for what it is 🙂

Expensive compared to Turkey for clothes and bags. Greece isn't cheap these days for anything though especially with the euro, price rises post Covid and mostly everything being fixed price. Turkey isn't far behind. We're in Istanbul at the moment and the cheapest beer in a bar is 100tl which is £4.

Ah this is just a stop on our way home as we're 5 months into a 6 month trip where we've been filming. You can do a day trip to Marmaris on the ferry from Rhodes if you fancy it. Unsure on the prices but there are plenty of tour shops in Rhodes. Definitely worth the day out. Be sure to say hi to them at Hermes for us! Sadly we can't work Rhodes into our itinerary as we had planned before we get back to the UK so we are going to try and do Santorini on a budget later on in the month. Let us know how you get on when you go and have a great trip 🙂
