Now I got trans done and just put efi live on it. Haven't done a done in a while but she definitely hauls ass. There's alot of other things I've done but I feel like those were the most beneficial ones

    For an Lb7 id say grade c head gaskets,arp studs,trans built, and then 5 position with efi live...preferably with cold air intake, and or some kind of exhaust mods prior to tuning.

  • @edgepitts
    @edgepitts Před 6 lety +7

    You want the grade C head gaskets as well, especially on high milage motors... I learned the hard way...

    • @FixedVaneDuramax
      @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 6 lety +3

      I definitely can't argue with you there, this truck has them with ARP headstuds as well. Headgaskets are such a hit or miss thing on these trucks, and from what I understand its not really the headgaskets themselves that are the problem, its the OEM head bolts that stretch out of spec, allowing the gasket to fail. Even on the notorious LLYs it is so randomized. Some guys fail on stock power, some trucks never have an issue, even pushing 650 hp. Seems to be the luck of the draw more than anything else. My last duramax was an 05 LLY with 135k and I bought it unknowingly at the time with bad headgaskets (I was inexperienced and naive at the time haha) So I immediately got to drop a ton of money to make it solid again. So all in all I wouldn't say 100% that you need new gaskets and studs just right off the bat, but it is definitely something to watch for, and if your already doing new injectors on one of these LB7's if you can I would recommend digging a little further and replacing the gaskets, and oem bolts with ARP studs.

      DuraMAxFanatic Sorry for the delayed response, the short answer is Im not sure. I think it would be totally fine for normal daily driving, as long as you’re not putting the wood to the truck constantly. right now I would be happy to just get back to stock power ... have to baby the truck but I depend on it for field work.. got it from a yard and it turns out it was originally a utility truck for a major metro. IMHO they took all the questionable parts and put on it, then unloaded it. I know very little about diesels but am trying to learn as I go. hoping to put on a lift pump to help with the lack of power and unexpected stalls. starts good. sounds ok at idle. deleted resonator but never hear it spool up. will make a jig to test for leaks in boost side. only code I have is a bad intake heater. if u know of a good video for beginners with lb7 and how to test/monitor it would be appreciated.

    I did all the performance mods without going too deep into my engine so intake, exhaust, tune, lift pump , boost increase valve and just sent it until my trans died 2 years after my first limp mode. Bought a PPE stage 5 kit with a billet cover and billet stator triple disc converter got it for around 3100 and had it built by a guy who worked at Allison for years and now owns his own shop in NY. Cost around 1300 dollars for labor, seals, and a sensor.
    Next up on the list is suspension mods because I’ve never launched it at all.

      Nicely done sir. If I was to recommend anything, get a decent set of HD tie rods, a set of Pitman and Idler arm supports, and thats really all you will need. If you want to spend $1500 on a whole new Kryptonite front end thats up to you but its not really necessary. Just make sure your lower your front end to ensure a decently straight angle on your CV axles.

Dynoed at 511/972 last year, ive done some tweaking since then so Im hopefully to be more like 530-550/1100 at this point but who knows. Ive just now started sled pulling a little so I am staying with a stock charger, but ive got a few more things to play with yet to really max out the stock system. @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 6 lety +4

      HuntNreeL Impressive! Im similiar I just need to move past my stock charger yet. What are you running for tuning? A G1 stealth 64 from Dmaxtuner should add approx 80ish hp to a maxed out stock turbo-stock injector Lb7. If your stock trans with safe tuning, I would estimate 450 rwhp, maybe 800 lb-ft of torque. If you are untuned at all, maybe 400 hp. Max effort EFI live and a built trans would have you knocking on the door at 600hp all day long! As it sits, Im sure you already are, but be very aware of your power output when shifting between 4th and 5th gears, that will be your weak link in a stock 5 speed allison.

I need to get a different charger under the hood but I really want to get this truck dynoed again just to see if the slight turbo modifications Ive done actually made a difference. I really like the looks of Duramaxtuner's new G2 Stealth 64, but Im leaning toward the Fleece Cheetah 63mm purely because its in the same power area and honestly they just sound amazing with the s300 core. If you get your transmission built to hold it I would really recommend getting some quality EFI live tuning I think you will be amazed at the powerplant you have.

    Are you worried about the crank breaking when pushing 550 to 600hp on an lb7?? I got an 01 lb7 and did the boost valve only making 23lbs. PPE xelerator tuner, intake, 4in exhaust, PPE race fuel valve, hsp turbo horn, fass 100gph, xdp fuel filter delete.

    • @FixedVaneDuramax
      @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 2 lety +1

      Is it a possibility...sure maybe, but not likely. Realistically it would bend a rod well before it breaks the crank though I'm sure it has happened. Proper tuning keeps the low end torque at a safe level and many stock bottom ends are surviving in the 650-750 hp range for a long long time.
      As far as your boost reading, how are you measuring it? If your reading it through your OBD-II port it will only read up to 22-23psi, thats as high as the oem sensor can go. If you want to read higher than that you will need either an EAS EGT Probe from your Edge CTS (if you have one) or a mechanical boost gauge.

    • @FixedVaneDuramax

    • @FixedVaneDuramax
      @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 5 lety +3

      No, thats a great place to be. Truck will sound good, be healthier without the EGR bringing that oily garbage back in, and you will have a great driving truck that you will enjoy 100% more than stock. However, even with Kory's stock trans safe tuning you can still beat a trans up if you mistreat it. Youll be in that 400-450 HP range I'd imagine, which is great but if your repeatedly doing long hard pulls at wide open throttle, the trans will get weak, especially between the 4-5 shift. But if you drive like a normal person, you will be totally fine and love the increased power and responsiveness of your vehicle. This is exactly what I had on my LLY that I owned a few years ago, Kory's tunes, 4" exhaust, WCFab EGR delete and an S&B intake.

    Where did you get your cab lights and were they very hard to install or did they come with the truck

    • @FixedVaneDuramax
      @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 5 lety

      So these came on the truck but I have installed cab lights on 4 out of my 6 trucks I've owned. I always order mine through gorecon.com generally. These are the low pro version meant for 07.5+ trucks but they will work on these trucks as well, I put a set on my 04 without an issue. Cab lights in general are not a hard job, you just have to be willing to take drill to the top of your cab.
      Take your time, measure out and center up your lights without drilling, then drill the holes and run the wires. You will need to pull down the front half of the headliner to be able to run the wiring from the lights to your fuse box and ground. I have done the old body style lights, dodge lights(5 singles), and these new body style ones, they are all the same process.
      Measure and center your lights (measure several times before drilling!)
      Drill holes for screws and wires
      Pull down headliner to access bare cab roof steel
      Run wiring harness (bought or make your own) from power/ground up to cab roof
      Fish light wires through cab roof
      Use a black silicon to help seal lights to roof as you use the screws to fasten the light down for all 3 lights.
      Hook power and ground from each light to power and ground from your harness, reinstall your headliner.
      Hope this helps

      You can put one in no problem, there may be some small gain to be had. To truly wake the truck up good efi live based tuning is the best bet.

      Fixed Vane Duramax ok I want to tune it but right now it’s all stock and I don’t have the money to build the tranny so would you still recommend I tune it? I also don’t have a lift pump on it

    • @FixedVaneDuramax
      @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 4 lety +1

      You definitely can still tune it on a stock trans. Almost every reputable tuning company sells a "trans safe" tuning package, usually with the highest tune 100-125hp over stock. However, you do have to have some self control. Just because they aren't huge huge tunes you can still wreck a transmission if you constantly beat on it. That being said, you can run a stock trans tuned truck almost indefinitely if you drive it normally and don't hot rod around racing every mustang in the county. You will have a much more responsive, easy and fun to drive truck.

      @@masonmanske1798 agree with fix vane
      Im bone stock 6inch lift on 35s
      I was scetchy of the tune also.
      I bit the bullet and went for efi live w dsp5 knob and tcm tune and an airdog lift pump.
      Ill tell you what its a whole different truck now. Smoked a few dodge chargers by a few feet. You should see there faces when we come to a stop.

      Limp mode. There are probably more codes but a basic scanner will just pick up the p0700 generic transmission issue code. The transmission is slipping under power and saving itself.

      Tactical Camel how are you reading your boost? With a mechanical gauge or edge cts? The edge only mirrors off the trucks ecm, which is limited to 22 psi, so anything above that isn't shown.

      Fixed Vane Fun oh really, I guess i need mechanical ones then.

    • @FixedVaneDuramax
      @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 6 lety

      Yeah so you have 2 options(that I know of.) You can either get gauges (either on the pillars or single) and run a boost line from your Ybridge or similar location. Or if you do not want to get big gauges you can actually get an add on sensor kit for your Edge CTS. Look up Edge EAS Pressure Sensor for your Edge CTS. Basically it adds an auxiliary pressure sensor onto your CTS so you can read accurate boost. You will still have to drill and tap somewhere like the Ybridge to thread in the sensor itself, but this is a cleaner look than full gauges. Depends what you are going for.

    • @tacticalcamel703
      @tacticalcamel703 Před 6 lety

      Fixed Vane Fun I’m going to get pillar gauges, mainly because it’s cleaner and i can have more gauges that way.

      Jamie Trippy Maybe for the parts themselves and a nice triple disk converter. But to have the trans dropped, built, and reinstalled by a quality shop will generally almost double the cost for labor. Average guy can’t do that himself, or at least shouldn’t.

    With all the guys building their trucks for big horsepower, why is it that no one ever upgrades the air to air cooler?

    • @FixedVaneDuramax
      @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 5 lety

      Harold Barrows They do generally after a certain level. Generally the cooler itself can handle the job cooling wise, but aren’t built for higher boost pressures. Mishimoto makes a really nice option for a replacement. But really there is no reason (that I can see) to swap it out until your stock one actually fails.

      Not to rain on your parade, but a stock injector/turbo lb7 with a built trans and good tuning will max out around 500-530hp to the wheels. The turbo itself is the limiting factor, with a quality drop in 64mm or 67mm charger you can push the stock injectors upwards of 600 rwhp.

    • @FixedVaneDuramax
      @FixedVaneDuramax  Před 9 měsíci

      No you haven’t, unless it was running nitrous. A healthy stock turbo will max out around 530 rwhp. That is well proven over 20 years and agreed upon by every performance/tuning company in the nation. This truck dyno’d 511/972 completely stock, 565/1162 with a port&polished turbo/stock fuel, plenty more after the s467/12mm cp3/ 65% injectors.
