I'm not into learning language but this video still spoke to me. In the niche I'm in this is happening also. It's easy to get into that negative way of thinking and jealously pokes it's ugly head in. We are all different and do things at our own pace. This video was awesome for opening my eyes to a few things.
I originally titled it with "language learning" in the title, but honestly I felt this could speak to people on a deeper level. I'm glad you got something out of it!
Thanks for this Jonathan, we always forget, downplay, or inflate the behind the scenes we imagine others having in their journeys. Then we do the same with our own at some point. Interestingly enough my imposter syndrome went up the more languages i studied, with even more pressure and expectation i put on myself, and it took a ton of mental work to work with what i was feeling. Thanks for sharing your valuable perspective with us!
Comparison can definitely be a thief of joy! As an artist, I've fallen into this trap many times. It's taken me a long time to mentally reach the point of being inspired more often than feeling down when I see artworks at a higher skill level than mine. It's helped a lot that I've tracked my progress and periodically looked at my old work, to see noticeable improvements. :) At the end of the day, the only person I'm really competing against is myself. And I have the rest of my life to get there, so I might as well enjoy the ride :)
