    I would highly encourage you (and every sewist) to make a muslin prior to cutting into your fashion fabric. Buy some cheap muslin on a bolt and use it to make a basic mockup. All of the fit issues will be apparent. All of the mistakes the pattern company has made will be apparent. You don’t have to make the entire dress, just the bodice and one sleeve. Use long stitches. This is such a time saver in the end. And also saves disappointment, frustration, and losing a beautiful fabric to a bad pattern. Your dress is lovely. I hope you make more. I have this pattern already. Now I’m inspired to sew it up with your helpful tips in mind. Cheers!

      Thank you! Yes I am at that stage now that making a muslin is a must before cutting into the really good stuff (some fabric I’m ok with experimenting with). I’m partially making up a vogue dress this weekend - just the top and waist section - to make sure it fits as I need as I can’t replace the fabric if I stuff it up! 😁

    I made this dress without proper knowledge of 'ease' and the finished product was a HUGE dress that I couldn't wear. So thanks for bring that up. Makes a huge difference once you know about it.

    I find it unaffordable to make a toile! But you could pick up something from the op shop or an old bed sheet and use that, but time is at. a Premium and barely get time to sew! I love the little signs you have in front of your machine! I don’t of tell people I sew my dresses, because you know what the next question will be???

    I really enjoy your vlogs for many reasons, they are informative and fun, a great combination .
    I have the Butterick 6705 pattern but have shied away from making it as I’m nervous when it comes to making fitted garments !!!
    I will definitely look at the video you recommended ......I'm a fairly new sewist and refer to You tube constantly ( especially Karina at Lifting Pins and Needles who is an excellent "teacher" ).
    As for further vlogs, I always enjoy ones such as todays, as I said earlier, vlogs that are both informative and fun. I think you have got it just right .

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying them. This is the most fitted garment I have made so far so was nervous myself. So was annoyed when I clocked it was coming up too big. I think knowing the minimum ease requirements for each of the 3 key body measurement points really helps know what size to pick… so long as you can find the dang finished garment measurements!!!! 😜

      Me too. I have fabric to make it up but don't dare start. I don't usually make or wear fitted garments. I was nervous this dress would be tight and constraining - evidently not! :)

    I think pattern companies should use photos of dress fitting model as per models size so we can see what finish to expect. I think that would make them much better at drafting patterns that fit us without needing to be a Sherlock Holmes!

    • @RipperSeams

    The lack of info on the outside of Big4 patterns stops me buying them. They need to get with the times in my view- although some of the later ones are getting better. Great vlogs and huge congrats on 1.5k subscribers 😊. Lynne

      @RipperSeams  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks Lynne! I agree that they need to have a word to themselves and listen to what sewists want / need. I’m going to persevere as there are some lovely patterns out there. Just glad I’m learning how to navigate the pitfalls with them.

    Fitting and pattern sizes are the biggest headache I find in sewing so I sympathise. You did a good job finding out the facts 👍 as for your Q&A I'd definitely like to know how you came to live in the UK. But also what prompted you to start sewing 🧵?. I also love the backyard catwalk.

    • @RipperSeams

      Thank you! 😊 The big 4 have such lovely design ideas it would be so valuable if they focused more on the instructions and fit to make them more appealing to a wider audience. The last few I have made have actually been really good… just this dress spoiling my good run. But it still ended up great so not mad 😜

    What a joy to see a link to Marcy Hariell's video mentioned here. I've done more research/video watching than I've done sewing since I decided I was going to learn. I have tip-toed very, very slowly towards garment sewing, and most of my learning to sew projects have been more in the realm of crafts and accessories--things like placemats, totes, hats, etc. Anyway, I love Marcy's videos and you-can-do-this energy, even if I've been a bit hesitant to start my own garment-making journey. It's been a while since I've watched anything from her, so the reminder was great. I'm making the first garment for myself sometime in the next few weeks. That's the plan, anyway, so perfect timing for taking in your positive attitude (loved the bit about how you've grown from past you to current you in the way you feel about your confidence and skill level) and to get a dose of Marcy.
    Your dress turned out beautifully, and looks great on you. Love your backyard catwalks. 🙂

      I hope you enjoy your first garment make. Don’t forget, the goal is not to make it perfect, but to enjoy what you’re doing and learn from it… that my thought process anyway ☺️

    I made B6705 out of double gauze, the same view as you, sort of. I made the mistake of using a pale peachy pink fabric, which was too light for me, and the front bodice looked terrible with that much of that colour near my face. So I swapped out the front bodice for a faux wrap front bodice of a different dress pattern and was much happier with it. I also made it 2 full sizes smaller than the pattern said I required, partially because there is so much ease in that pattern, and partially because I was using double gauze, which stretches out when you wear it. I really like the dress with the modifications I made and would probably make it again in a deeper colour that suits me better, without swapping out the front of the bodice,but I would likely still make it 2 sizes smaller because it is still a bit big in the double gauze, so would likely be perfect in a different fabric likea viscose.

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Ooh… that sounds amazing!! I’m a bit shy of double gauze given its ability to ‘grow’… not good for the crotch area of trousers I’ve found out!! Love how you hacked your dress to success though. I’m going to make this one again in the 14 as interested to see how it fits when the sizing is correct all over.

    Love your dress Kate. Good luck with the trousers too. I suspect once you've nailed the fit, you'll make lots more. Cupro is not a fabric I've ever sewn with, so I'll be watching to see the finished trousers.
