      Thanks for watching! Been to Seattle a few times before and always find something new to explore. First time in Spring though and I think you are right…. I think they are just switching out their winter stock thus the lack of Rayon choices but mega mountain of fleece. Love my treasures I brought back ☺️

    JoAnn's filed for restructuring bankruptcy, so they'll be staying in business under new ownership. Happy news for me, I live near one and shop there weekly!

    For the last twenty or so years, the quality at Joann has gone down, down, and down. I don't even buy fabric there anymore for the most part. They have Kona cotton, some decent denim, and all of the interfacing you could want, but the rest is of very poor quality. I once bought some of their quilting cotton and could not get a finger hand sewing needle through it even with a thimble! Since there is nothing like it in the UK, I can see why you would go there. I just wish that you could have seen what they sold 20 or 30 years ago. Lovely stuff. The other places looked intriguing and I will definitely check them out the next time I'm there. I enjoyed the channel, so I subscribed. Cheers!

      I am interested to see how it washes and stands the rest of time. Will be an interesting experiment later in the year when most of my haul gets sewn up. Will also set me up for better choices next time I visit. We very much have smaller, bespoke shops and you’re lucky to have one nearby. No real big chain shops like Joann apart from a place called Hobby Craft but most of the ones I’ve been in have had small fabric sections. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Love it ☺️

    A few insights on JoAnns: all the patterns are in the drawers. You find them from the number in the books for the patterns you like. They always have a weird smattering of patterns on the racks. No rhyme or reason for what goes up there. So it wasn’t that the shelves were bare. Second, their sales can be deceptive. On the big sale days like Mother’s Day, Black Friday, etc, they give you huge percentage off coupons for regularly priced merchandise but literally everything in the store is marked down so those coupons are useless.

    • @FLOBRN
      @FLOBRN Před měsícem

      Absolutely correct. JoAnne needs to be taken to task for marking everything as "on sale" from the moment it hits the shelves. Their fabric selection here in the South Sound leaves a lot to be desired

    The Joann's in Bellevue that you visited is the one that I go to. They have been low on a lot of their inventory, especially the crafting areas. You're correct, the Michaels store next to Joann has a lot more selection, and they have more recently added fabrics to their store. If you ever have a chance to go to Hobby Lobby in Issaquah, try them. Their fabric department is not as large as Joann, but they have a large variety of crafting supplies and home decor. I was born in Seattle 64 years ago, and have lived here my entire life. It is a beautiful city, and it was nice to hear your comments about your experience here. Thanks for sharing!

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I popped into Michael’s there too (how could I not!) and it did look like for the crafty sections Joanns were struggling to coexist there. But they had quite different offerings so both of them got my money!!! 😜 I did look to see if I could get to Hobby Lobby while I was their but not enough time. Fingers crossed I get to go back in the next couple of years and take a look. Already forming a list of fabric / crafty destinations 🤣

    A majority of the patterns are stored in the filing cabinets that the pattern book was sitting on. They are filled! They only display the New Look patterns on the shelves by themselves (where you said they look a bit thinned out).

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  Před 4 měsíci

      I did clock the filing cabinets and their fabric and yarn sections were really full so hopefully all is well for this particular store. It was their crafting areas that were a lot more empty… especially in contrast to the Micheal’s across the road (that was a whole different experience!) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment ☺️

    Joann’s actually does have some wonderful rayon and Tencel fabrics. Every store I’ve seen has a rayon and spandex (maybe a bit of poly) sweater knit…love it so much went back today for more. So delightful to wear. I’ve also found a rayon cotton flannel mix, divine, but hidden in all that flannel. Finally, in the denim department they have a 100%Tencel, behaves like rayon but less damaging environmentally, but really lovely, and have gone back in the past for matching prints f the same makeup. All that doesn’t help you now, but may help someone else. Take care.

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching! I did see the odd rayon bolt in there but it was hidden amongst the jerseys and cottons so hard to find. I would imagine as the weather warms up in Seattle it will be a bit more apparent. I’ll have to visit a warmer state next time perhaps 😁 Loved their denim section and could have done some serious damage there if I didn’t have luggage restrictions 😜

    I have two Joann stores near me. I recently went to the one that's a bit farther away than the one by my house. It's like walking into two different stores. They're arranged quite differently, with one having a lot of fashion fabrics as soon as you walk into the door, and the other one focusing more on quilting cottons when you walk in. It's difficult to explain, but the feel of the stores are just different, and they do have some different stock (which is why I went, the one store had a fabric I wanted that the closest one didn't). They -always- have big sales and coupons, and some sections can be stocked much better than others, depending when you go in. I do hope they stay in business, but I'm tickled to have discovered we have an independent fabric store about 45 minutes or so from where I live. I'm newish to sewing, and thought that Joann might be the only physical resource I was going to have in my area. I'm loving the feel of being in that store, and their fabrics are wonderful.
    I haven't really been making garments yet (just some pj pants for my partner) but I've discovered a love of making hats. Just finished my third bucket hat, and I made two of another style of hat this winter. I love Madcap Hats here on CZcams, and am making a couple more of their hats in the near future. At this rate, I'm going to need to learn to make clothes so I have things that go with my hats. 😀

      When I was in Texas, I went to 2 Joanns in DFW, and one of them was totally focused on quilters and the other one was focused on garment fabrics especially special occasion . The difference was one was right in the downtown area and the other was headed out towards the countryside headed south towards Houston. Both were great for the customer that would’ve been looking for those specific things but disappointing if you were from the other camp.

When you come back check out these shops, Pacific Fabrics in SODO (stands for South of Downtown) is a locally-owned place that's been around for ages. It's a bit of a drive but Quilting Mayhem in Snohomish (north of the city) is incredible, a huge place with loads of fabric, not just quilting cotton but a nice selection of garment fabric as well. Seattle Recreative in the Greenwood neighborhood is a sort of thrift shop for crafty stuff, not just sewing but yarn, art stuff, jewelry supplies and needlework. That JoAnn's location is one I go to occasionally... with the ulterior motive of the food court 😋 and yes, without a plan JoAnn is choice paralysis! Even with a plan, I almost always end up with things I didn't intend to get.
    Anyway, subscribing now and looking forward to more of your videos 🥰

      Man… that was a great food court! Appreciated the big Daiso, Old Navy, and Micheals as well. Was meant to head down the road to the Target but was exhausted so called it quits! Love Seattle. Is my 4th time visiting and hopefully not the last. So beautiful and welcoming ☺️

    I like to research before I travel. There are at least 4 Joann's in Seattle and you missed Pacific Fabrics in Sodo! In the Beginning (now only online) and Pacific have the best quilt fabrics.

      I saw all the other Joanns and picked the one in Bellevue because of the other shops nearby and looked quite big. Was a fun day out and totally went over my baggage allowance (oops) Also I had Pacific Fabrics on my list but ran out of time. Next visit!…fingers crossed next year 😀

    Nice choices, in locations and in fabrics. Both of those green-based fabrics will look lovely on you!
    Next time, might want to take a ferry and visit some shops west of Seattle. I especially like Quilted Strait in Port Gamble and (a bit of a trek) Shibori Dragon west of Tacoma.

      Thanks for the tips! Catching a ferry is definitely on my list for next time. Eyeing off one of those green fabrics for later this month so watch this space 😊

    Hmmm, I always like Pacific Fabrics but its south of downtown and (if still in business) in an old factory warehouse, sort of grungy but they've got great stuff at fair prices.

    • @RipperSeams
      @RipperSeams  Před 3 měsíci +1

      They seemed to still be open when I was there. Just didn’t have the time to visit this particular trip. Did look a bit grungy for the outside looking at google maps but also looked like there was treasure inside. But then… isn’t Seattle the home of grunge?! (lookin’ at you Nirvana and Pearl Jam). Hoping to be back next year and will definitely visit if they’re still there.

      The SODO Pacific Fabrics is the only one left. It’s one of the few fashion fabrics stores left in the area. We have some great quilting stores in the area. I have never been to Stitches or the Pike Place Market store. I will have to investigate. Thank you for the tour!

    I ❤ the AvoCATo fabric.
    I buy batiks at Joann's. On sale + 20% off, under $7/y. Can't afford the quilt shops in my town, $17/y for Kaffee, Tula, etc...

      To be fair, the one place where that print makes some sort of sense is Texas 😜 Make something cosy then feel all smug when you have it ready and waiting when the weather does drop!
