Make your own wood stain using household vinegar. From grey to brown to black. Amazing recipe and process. Compared to Varathane weathered wood accelerator as well as duplicated the look.
This was kinda fun to watch, Tom. I'm like 8stringmonkey. I've always got some 'homemade stain' brewing (three mason jars at the present time). I always begin with vinegar and steel wool when I brew up my stain 'moon shine, but I throw in any old nails, screws, thumb tacks or any other misc metal that I see around the shop. I'm crazy about curiouscharacter1's idea to load up on free shavings at the hardware store. Talk about a creative cheapskate. He's right up there with you. You know that you're the leader of all of us cheapskates who watch CZcams, don't you?
If you don't want to spend money on steel wool (like me) there are other options for free. I use mild steel occasionally. When I hit the hardware store to pick some up, I go in the back where they have the metal cutting bandsaw. I just fill a jar with metal shavings, degrease and use that in my vinegar. The guy who cuts the metal just shakes his head when I grab several handfuls of free filings.
When I was about 10 my dad used to take me to the dump where he'd scrounge all the used lumber he could find. He'd give me a quarter to pull all the nails and then I'd have to take a hammer and straighten all the bent nails I pulled on the sidewalk. So, I guess you could say my frugality is genetic.
@@curiouscharacter1 Good story :-) Growing up in Chicago we didn't have dumps. I did go to one dump when we would go on vacation in Canada and I remember the smell. There were always crows flying overhead and would scatter as our car approached. The diseases one could pick up ...lol

I've got a batch of "homemade stain" with vinegar and rusty pallet nails currently brewing.
Cool tip. Might try it out.

Very Nice! My wife says that I'm the cheapest man alive but it looks like I have some competition :-)
