1983 is my favorite year for the 308! Lucky you!

The first time I drove a 308GTS I almost wrecked it 10 minutes after buying it. During a panic stop in traffic my foot bashed in the clutch instead of the brake. It took another 1/2 hour to get used to the pedals being offset to the right to make room for the wheel well. I couldn't even get out of the damned thing....couldn't find that tricky door handle under the forward arm rest.
I had 2 Ferrari 308 GTS and a fiberglass 308 GTB. My silver/black GTS still sits in my garage on blocks. Its a Webber carbed 1978 and was made the same week that I graduated from Engineering school. I will die before I ever sell it.
I loved the instantaneous lane change on the freeway. Jog that steering wheel and it makes that lightning fast move without fuss. The car will never pass the emissions test in the People's Republik of Kalifornia so it sits non opped, unregistered.
Once I was going to remove the engine/transaxle and make a coffee table out of it. I have a Caddy Northstar engine and Pontiac 6 speed ready to drop in. 300+ hp, cheap replacement parts, injected, pass smog every time, mileage goes from14 to 20mpg average. I never got around to it. These days I forget that I even own a Ferrari.....until some dumb ass makes fun of my Geo Metro Convertible. My universal reply....''Sorry, I left my Ferrari in my garage. Yeah, I'll bring it next time''.
In my 60's now, I have owned various Ferraris for more than half of my life. I did all of my own work on them and replaced 2 sets of clutches, replaces ALL of the rubber coolant hoses (wow, mid engine, front radiator, aluminum tubing...lots of hoses). 78's had 2 distributors, 4 sets of points. I shitcanned that troublesome setup and drilled and tapped the rear distributor for the forward points, got rid of the idle points. Dumb setup but USA smog regulations required it. I even machined a special GM V-8 HEI distributor to replace the sorry Ferrari setup but never installed it.
A friend sent me this vid and it brought back tons of memories, especially yours being silver. My 30 year old son has the bragging rights that the first stick shift car he ever drove at 15-1/2 with learner's permit was a Ferrari. He did very well! He even rode in it in his car seat before he could even walk. Thank you for the memories!

Oh...I bought my 78 308GTS in 1982 from a 19 year old drug dealer. Seems they were going to break his legs if he didn't have a wad of money by the weekend. The were selling for $36K and I got it for $24,500 cash. I just returned from overseas with a pocket full and flew to LA with a cashier's check made out to cash, ready to deal. I have no clue what they sell for these days.

Right now (July 2017), 308's are anywhere from 2 to 4 times what you paid in 1982. Some are trying to get 6 times more, but I think they're huffing on crack pipes a little too much. :-P

@@MrHowzaa I had my first 3 some because of it. I was sleeping in the car at the end of the glider airfield in Calistoga, Calif, with the radio on low. 2 girls from UC Berkeley woke me up. I took them for rides around town and then we drove to the Berkeley Hot Tubes where they took me for rides. I had a taxi cab yellow 1976 Chevy Nova as a work car back then and that afternoon would have never happened had I been napping in the Lettuce Picker car. 😀

Really fun to drive. Inexpensive to buy, about the price of a Honda, but maintenance is the price of another Honda.

My first Ferrari was a 1977 GTB, black and red. I am 6'4" and barley fit in it. I had to wear cowboy boots to drive it because of my wide size 13 shoes and the offset pedals. I had a couple of Pantera's before it and it was a way better car though not as fast in a straight line. The 308 GTB drove like a go cart and rode well for a sports car. I had it for about seven years and went to a 1983 308 GTS next which was also a great car. They both had that distinctive Ferrari howl from the exhaust. For the last sixteen years I have owned a 1986 Testarossa which has a lot more power/room and a flat 12. That 1977 GTB will go down as one of the best cars I have ever had without a doubt.

Interesting point you mention about the tail lights. It's something I never even noticed, until you mentioned it ... I then checked online and MOST pics seem to have the indicator/reverse lights on the outside (there are a few like yours). It's not a problem to swop them around, although it actually looks quite nice - and unique - with them on the inside.

The tail lights have definitely been reversed. The turn indicator / reverse lenses belong on the outside. The factory never offered this car with the turn indicator / reverse lenses positioned on the inside. Someone re-installed them incorrectly at some point.

unusual colour scheme , I mean the fact that its painted black below the centre swathe line, I'd be inclined to paint that back to silver, but otherwise the car looks great, silver with red interior is a good combo.

Hi Chris, this paint scheme is called Boxer Trim. This is a factory option and VERY rare. It looks great on light colored cars.

Taillights are reversed. Whenever I see this I wonder if it was put back wrong after a repaint.

    • @blitzlead1884
      @blitzlead1884 Před 8 lety +1

+Tommy Cosgrove I wouldn't wonder at all. There's really no other reason for the rear lights to be reversed. Exact same thing happened with a friend's 328. He made the big reveal and I recognized the car. Knew what had happened. He didn't. Awkward. Also, I was always of the understanding the boxer trim on a 308/328 was a dealer or aftermarket add-on. Sort of the BBi look. Nice color combo though. Not common. Really looks great on a late '70s 308 because, personal preference here, the red is darker.

Ferrari automobiles of that period were piles. It’s only when you get to the Modena 360 that their cars had decent build construction and are actually worth the effort. I kind of admire the people that attempt to spiff those 308’s.
