The Dino 246 and 308 GT4 Were Not "Less-Than" Ferraris - Revelations with Jason Cammisa Ep. 31

  • Popular lore has taken an out-of-context quote from Enzo Ferrari that "a Ferrari is a twelve-cylinder car" to mean that Il Commendatore thought any car with fewer than twelve cylinders is not worthy of the Ferrari badge. And thus, the Dino Ferraris aren't real Ferraris.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Dino was the name of Ferrari's only one legitimate son, who died young at the merciless hands of Muscular Dystrophy. Dino himself was named after Enzo's father and older brother, both of whom died when Enzo was a teenager.
The "Dino" badge wasn't an insult - it was an honor. And it adorns two of the best-driving Ferrari road cars ever created.
In this episode, automotive journalist Jason Cammisa explains the history of Enzo's Double Ds - the 206/246 Dino and the 308 GT4 Dino - and how they both foretold the future of Ferrari's road cars, both in layout (mid-engine sports car) and in engine (with the 308 GT4's flat-plane-crankshaft V-8.)

Another tidbit that ads to the Dino legacy, according to Carol Shelby, who considered Dino a close friend, Dino cared far more about road going sports cars than his father, so it's absolutely fitting that 2 of the best driving Ferrari road cars of all time bear his name. Despondency won me, and I cried" (Enzo Ferrari, on being rejected by FIAT)

Jason is the best auto journal in the business. The depth of automotive geekiness coupled with entertaining wit. I was hit by the “thunderbolt” at age 10, War Memorial Auditorium Car Show in Fort Lauderdale, 1976. I became a Dino fan first and foremost. I never owned one but did own a 308 GTSi and Mondial T Coupe. A 914-6 was the closest I ever got to it as far as a direct competitor. Guess there’s no surprise my daily is a 981S Cayman and my garage trophy is a GT4RS. For me, all automotive roads lead to the Dino underdog to its bigger brother recipe.

I thought long and hard about it and it wasn’t feasible for a junior ad sales guy… 🤨

In 1997, I spent every dime I had and even got a loan to purchase a 1980 Ferrari 308 GTSi. It was a very impractical decision as I should have got a property, which was a lot better for my future. However, I don't have regrets as I can one day tell my grandchildren that I used to own a cool Ferrari when I was in my 20s. Now, that is a great story to tell. No regrets.

To this day I still cringe when I re-watch that TG Cheap Italian Supercars bit and JC starts going on about how Hammond's car "isn't truly a Ferrari". First off, he's driving, more or less, a Citroen with a Maserati-badge in that film (gorgeous car, all the same), so he shouldn't be talking about badges. Secondly, it could say "Super Mario" on the badge of both the 308 GT4 and the 246 and they'd still be awesome cars. Plus: Hasn't the 246 been one of the most desirable vintage Ferraris, fetching ridiculous prices since ... forever?
OTOH, I just checked current GT4 prices and those haven't *really* budged all that much since TG made that film. Even 3-liter examples in very good condition (judging from the pics and descriptions) can be had for 40k to 70k over here in Europe. It might sound a bit silly, but maybe that's precisely because of that TG-film where we were being told that the GT4 was "the wrong car".
Oh, and lastly: Let's not forget which car in that film was in the best ... err.. least worst shape and did last the longest and that when it went out, it didn't suffer a disintegrating engine. I seem to remember that Hammond bought that car off the production company afterwards and restored and kept it. The Maserati OTOH went to a scrap-yard dealer - I do remember finding it for sale on their website back in the day and they did, BTW, confirm that it was an actual SS, not a regular Merak with an SS-badge.

It's almost as if real car enthusiasts don't take what Clarkson says as the absolute truth. Sadly, I don't think that was even the purpose of the original Top Gear. It's blindingly obvious that the viewers were expected to take everything said (by any of them!) with a pinch of salt. Sadly, not everyone did, and are taking what Clarkson said as the undeniable truth.

I had a Dino 246gt - it came with shields and a boot badge and because I live in the UK and anyone who drives a Ferrari is an instant W**k*r and they let you know by shouting it constantly - I took them off - and it worked - I mean I might be a W**k*r but at least no-one shouted it at me - I eventually crashed it like most idiots do. I sold it for scrap circa 2001 - and that was another idiotic mistake. When I had a Venturi A300 Atlantique everyone loved it, as did the TVR Cerbera I had - so what is it about a Ferrari - and it has to be one where they can see the badges?

The V6 sounds really good from the camera on the Trunk Lid, under which the engine resides.....
The V8, like Jason said in the podcast, sounds like a 4-cyl but a really good 4-cyl, and to me it sounds like a Honda Sports Car 4-cyl without V-TEC and a screaming high redline.
Incredible work on the story, Jason, respect your and your team's effort behind the scenes that you put into reading through a lot of articles, books magazines and presenting it in a humorous yet informational way to the public.
All that said, for what ducking reason did you stop Know It All? We all loved it, cos we got to learn and laugh through each one of those short videos that we get to learn important stuff that we'd have never learnt otherwise... And the icing on that cake is the way you explained everything... Simple language, easy to understand, funny enough sometimes to remember for a whole lifetime. All I ask for is to bring it back, because, that's probably the only way I'd love to learn car stuff while laugh till i get a stomach ache.
    Appreciate your effort guys!

I remember an old Duke Ferrari documentary saying how much Enzo loved Dino ( Seemingly more then his other kids for some reason ) and how the name was a tribute. Always seemed weird that people would say it was because the cars were inferior but that never made sense because he adored Dino. This was cathartic thank you Jason and Hagerty.
