I love the drama of hearing Big Ben chiming in 2000, with only about 20 seconds to go. Then the last bell reverberates into the night and the cheers grow, just ten seconds to go. Then the moment arrives, a big 'bong' and the entire sky lights up with fireworks. A moment that may never be seen again. What will our descendants be doing in 1,980 years' time?

Gosh I remember this night as if it were yesterday. I remember an era of happiness and optimism where the new millennium and future gleamed with possibility. It breaks my heart knowing how things would actually turn out. 9/11 wounded that happiness and optimism before the financial crash of 2008 systematically destroyed it. It really hurts me as I came of age during a time where the country (and world) genuinely felt amazing and was full of possibility. It was like we were all pulling in the same direction.
The only thing that came close to that feeling was the summer of 2012 during the olympics as we all united behind our athletes and celebrated the spectacle of the games.

Watching this the people look much younger here in the video, however things don't look old fashioned or outdated in anyway. The only way I can put the fact it's 20 years ago into context is to think what it would have been like to watch footage of new years eve 1979 in early 1999 as that still feels like a long time ago as I was only 5 years old in that year.

The end of 1999 held a lot of people cheering and yelling from down below of the stage, balloons popped out of the way as many lights flickered (did not flash after 3 seconds until 2000) during the loudest roar of all the years in London.
Last year in 1998 Dec 31, people did not come to the party but they celebrated at home only. Music came out.
But this time in the 2000 day, many people scattered.
The lucky years like this happened in 1998,2000,2001,2002,2003,2004, and 2005.
We were worried about 2005 because we did not see the real footage of the fireworks.
It was only seen on Itv1Wales, Dec 31 2004.

Hello. A couple of days ago I uploaded videos from the millennium videos too, but from Prague ( first video from Wenceslas Square at 23:35. The second one from Old Town Square with Czech countdown from the main celebration and the third video is a walk through Paris street directly to the main celebration with a monstrous firework. It was a very raucous celebration. It was amazing. Hope you enjoy the videos. The main thing is that I experienced this. It's a very nice memory of a huge celebration of the new millennium. Thank you for your attention and your very nice video. Greetings from the Czech Republic.🙂

Watching this footage is impossible not to feel a real sense of hope at a new Millennium dawning. I can actually feel the hairs on the back on my neck standing up.
These people had no idea of what was to come - 9/11, the 2008 Global Financial crash, popstars we grew up with dying before they are old, Trump, Brexit, apocalyptic forest fires, and now Meghxit. The few bright times being the 2012 London Olympics, England winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and our Cricket team doing the same in 2019.
No one is clutching a smartphone, taking a selfie, or looking jaded from phone screen overexposure.......and no women wearing those horrible thick eyebrows.
What a different world it was then. Wish I could travel back to 1999 and tell people to brace themselves for what was coming, and to expect to no longer be naive and carefree. Those were indeed the days.....

Also I think it pays to remember that this century has not been a century of war, destruction and misery. Look at us, we can watch this video in very high quality on demand, no tapes, no discs. We can talk to anyone in the world in real time and publish our holiday photos to the world at large. We need never be bored. This was barely imagined in 2000. We're trying our best to tackle climate change. Yes automation, inequality and insecure work are causing long-term economic problems, but we are much richer and live better than we did in 2000. While inequality is growing, extreme poverty and hunger are disappearing. The wars we fight and the terrorist attacks we endue are small potatoes compared to the wholesale carnage of the twentieth century. We might not be living in utopia, but that was never going to happen. The third millennium is turning out much better than what it looks.
