The State High School tournament is the most incredible experience, and would highly recommend it. There's essentially a season ticket list for the tournament, and if you're not on that list, it's extremely difficult to get to the Saturday games (Championships). Schools get the day off if their team makes it to state, and they haul kids to the X on school buses and have a whole section for the students to be there to cheer on their school. The student section chirps to each other are hilarious, and the random sections of other schools chirping the schools playing is a fun time too. Some of the best hockey being played in the country, and always a blast with upsets and so much energy. P.S. - If you want to sound like a Minnesotan, it's pronounce "Mah-ta-me-die". Our cities are weird as hell.

You should try to get more into the tourney as it’s called here. Passion is like nothing else. Also the section he celebrated to was the Mahtomedi student section.

The reason for the cross-ice celebration is that's where that team's student section is. Often it's the JV and lower teams from the same school so the kids all know each other. I played HS hockey in Minnesota (never made it to the tourney) back in the late 80's before the Xcel existed, and in the same spot was the St Paul Civic Center, which had...wait for it... CLEAR BOARDS. All you had to do is be on a high school hockey team and you got free tickets AND a day off of school to attend the entire (at the time) 3-day event (Fri/Sat/Sun),
One of my buddies on my beer league team went to the tourney to play in '92, but sprained his ankle a week before, so he didn't actually get to play.

Lifelong MN resident in their 40s. People here lose their shit over the state hockey tourney. I didn't become a hockey fan until my 20s (my HS had no hockey program, probably why), but definitely enjoy watching it. Dudes are very skilled.

That was the Mahtomedi student section. The kid ended up getting a 2 year ban from the X-Cel Energy Center (totally worth it). As someone who is from minnesota, high school hockey is everything here. The high school I graduated from was a game away from making state for the first time this year. When they did presale tickets for that game they sold out of the 900 allotted tickets in under half a day. The student body of the school is 1600. So it's everything to the people here.

From Minnesota and having some free time, I watched the entire tourney on tv the last 4 days, love it every year. I was a band kid in high school, my team went to the tourney at least once when I was there so the band went, watching live is pretty awesome. The girls had their tourney a couple weeks back and it’s the same deal, at the Xcel and everything.
One minor correction for you, they games have 17 minute periods, and first overtime is actually an 8 minute period where the don’t resurface the ice, but then double overtime is a resurface and full 17 minute.

  • @sportsnut198

The MN High School Hockey tournament is the BEST week of hockey on the planet bar absolutely none. It’s a 4 day celebration of hockey in Minnesota where we pack 20,000+ fans into the Xcel Energy Center and many more pack the bars along west seventh. It’s on every TV you come across and it is the one thing many people look forward to each and every year. A season ticket holder wait list of over a decade, lines that go the entire length of the neighboring convention center just to get a standing room only ticket (you’ll wait upwards of 4 hours in total in this line just for a CHANCE at a ticket).
Little kids in Minnesota don’t dream of the NHL, or DI hockey (although both of which many have played in/at), they dream of The Tourney. One day playing for their hometown at the X. It’s pure electricity.
Whatever you think it is, it’s more. Words do NOT do it justice.

I would have loved to play ice hockey in High School, but my small Colorado school didn't have it. Great sport! My only gripe about the sport is when you are watching on tv, it can be really hard to follow the puck. Half the time I just watch the players reactions to know where it is.

That goal by Mahtomedi to end it was disgusting. What an ending. Definitely thought Warroad was gonna win it going into that game. Also, pumped Tonka won the AA game!!! Since you mentioned it, the fan that jumped the glass was escorted off the ice and reportedly got a 2-year ban from the Xcel, which, as a Minnesotan, is incredibly soft by Xcel. Hopefully, Billy G rectifies it lol.

As a kid who played at a 2AA school, all you ever want to do is play in the tourney. This is an epic event that is the top of the spear for every child in the state. This is something that the kids will take with them to their grave. It’s streamed nationwide, played locally and the tourney is sold out from beginning to end. It’s been played for years at “the X” after years at the old Civic center where they played with clear boards.

My high school team played in a little public arena that seated maybe two hundred people. The games were fun, but zero atmosphere. I went because my best friend played, and I was the only kid from my school at those games who wasn't playing. The atmosphere at these games in Minnesota looks incredible, the quality of play is fantastic, the energy level is super-high. It has to be a blast to go to one of those games.

All: Remember the names: Jayson Shaugabay (sp? UMD commit. USHL) and Carson Pilgrim (not committed, unbelievably. Different player but more complete, I think). The story I found a while ago that I found fascinating was how the local native Chippewa tribe works with the High School on the logo. It may be an easy decision for them to do considering there are usually around 8 kids or so who have native American blood who play for Warroad each year but still cool (of which Shaugabay and Pilgrim are as well, I believe). I think Oshie was as well (?). I was really rooting for them to put the third championship feather on the logo. Very cool story to the whole thing.
I sat next to an elder, for lack of a better way to put it, during the Mahtomedi game who was a grandfather to one of the boys. His knowledege of the game was top notch. He even said after they got the goal to go up by two: "They better get one more. 2 isn't going to be enough". Unfortunately he was right.

I play in Minnesota hockey even though we are from Iowa. I have played and beat a lot of the teams. I played mahtomedi in a tournament in Hudson Wisconsin it was a really good game but we ended up losing because our teammate tried to wait the time out when we were down by one. Good job mahtomedi.
