It still blows my mind that they called cp_snowplow "too confusing for new players" when a map like tc_hydro has been in the game since day one. Even when I first played TF2 back in 2008 I think I only ever played tc_hydro to get the one or two achievements that require playing on it.
If tc is hard for you to comprehend don't even take a look at rd asteroid
JP Collector I'm talking about overall complexity, meaning both complexity of the map and gamemode. rd_asteroid has a pretty straightforward map, and though it's gamemode is more complex than others, it really isn't that hard to understand. tc_hydro on the other hand, while it has a relatively simple gamemode, has a very complex map.
Of the six control points, there are quite a few possible rounds putting one area against another. In each one there are unique paths and shortcuts opened up and others closed, not to mention you're usually always attacking in at least a slightly different direction. To add to it the map isn't even symmetrical as two-way control point maps usually are (considering each round of tc_hydro is essentially a mini cp match), so it's a different game depending on which side you're on. There are so many different map combinations for each round that unless you've played on the map a whole tonne it's always confusing figuring out where the point is and where any flanking routes are.

This is the issue I have with big servers like Skial, Lotus, and other big name server groups I can't remember. They basically destroy servers that run maps that don't get played. How often outside of a youtuber's server, do you actually play on a custom map made by the community, or maps that don't get played all that much from Valve. It's really sad to me, so many maps get created, then go dead because the community refuses to play them. When Cactus Canyon, and Asteroid get finished, how much you wanna be-no not even, I'll bet 100 Jerma Dollars that they'll be dead a month or two after they're actually finished maps.

It's a shame that Hydro is either A) a terrible map or B) only a bad map because nobody plays it (depending on who you ask) because it is a very pretty looking and intricate map.

The game mode is Territory Control, it's just that Hydro is the only map for that game mode.
It could possibly be that it is a great map, but nobody remembers it because A) There are so many 24/7 servers that use only one map, and there are only a few maps that 24/7 servers use (never see a 24/7 Yukon server, do you?), or B) the tc_ part. Change that tc_ to cp_, and I think a lot more people would play it, because they would be able to find it more easily.
It's an alright map. The game mode is shit though. It just doesn't work well with TF2's gameplay.
It's just a bad map. In most variations there's only ever one path to go through that just becomes one gigantic chokepoint-y mess, and most of the time one or two competent Engineers can completely shut out any possibility of losing.
Which is a shame, there are a few parts of the map like the control-point-surrounded-by-a-pit and the lasts on both side (which are asymmetrical) that are really interesting ideas. I wish someone would make a pro_hydro or some other kind of systematic revision to it.
SimularMine1 Thats the problem witch tc_ maps - you have to stuff 8 playable minimaps into one big terrain. I would love to see a "open" version of hydro, one where you can go anywhere, similar to steel but without "e cap". It will be probably too big, but with longer cap times could be fun.
Or even remake it into "domination", with koth-like point gathering. I am looking ad you, random map-maker.

The reason why there's like nobody on tc_hydro and other REAL tf2 maps is because 3/4 of the tf2 population are on trade servers

Hydro may be old, but it holds a lot of the original aesthetics of TF2. I like it for its setup and its look, and also both Expiration Date and Meet the Engineer took place here.

Why did they completely abandon the one game mode that doesn't feel repetitive? Hydro was a great map. It's not even confusing for new players - everyone was a new player back then but didn't complain.

First coming into Team Fortress 2, I'd not played the first. I hadn't even heard of this game until I got a PS3 and found The Orange Box port. And when I saw swaths of player vying over territories on different, tug-of-war CP maps, I thought that was the coolest shit ever. I thought TF2 was going to be like that.
Instead, it's fucking 2fort and Steel and Asteroid. :c

Probably a big reason no one plays hydro is the fact that there is no Territorial Control game mode on quick play
because the mode sucks... is only made by "quick caps" or by "stalemates"

I remember going on a tc_hydro map recently, it definitely had over 20 players.
It was also a randomiser server...

The only way to play on hydro is with randomized servers those days.
I would of laught if they actually got a server filled with people with no hats and only using stock weapons.
Console versions have about 6 maps, one of which is Hydro. Alot of times all I see is Hydro and 2 fort.

Hydro is a classic example of entrances and routes defining balance. The middle maps are stalemates because there are only two routes(one more out of the way), while the last point is a steamroll because there are four entrances to the defending base.
