Shaquille O’Neal opens up about his divorce, relationship with Penny Hardaway and what really went on between him and Kobe Bryant in a rare look back into his life as he shares with the guys what keeps him up at night.
For the most part, Shaq says how he’s lived life his way but as he’s become older, he looks back with a couple of regrets, the main one being his divorce and the other never reaching out to Kobe after they finished playing together.
As Ryan leads the conversation about family and all of them making mistakes at one point or another over the years- the men discuss the point of coming to a realization that sometimes mistakes become decisions that can be difficult to come back from. The conversation takes a somber tone as Shaq shares how he is to blame for his marriage ending and the struggles he faced after not having his family with him everyday.
Channing lightens the mood, by talking shit with Shaq about his reputation of missing free throws, his eyes being close together and can’t resist asking about the sexual challenges Shaq faces by being such a large human and curious to how it all goes down.
Fred gets into the basketball conversation with Shaq and the guys take a trip down memory lane of how his career played out and what he would have done differently if given the chance.
Being transparent about his playing days with the Magic his move to LA and then to Miami, Shaq shares how he believes Penny Hardaway was Kobe Bryant before Kobe was Kobe. “If Penny didn’t get hurt, he would have been one of the top 3 players in the history of game” Shaq says.
Losing his sister unexpectedly and then dealing with the death of Kobe, Shaq regrets not picking up the phone and has no excuse but shares the lesson- we are never too busy to make a call.

My daughters and I randomly met Shaq years ago when they were little. My youngest daughter ran up to him and introduced herself. Shaq was amused that they didn’t know him for Basketball but from the Goodburger movie!😂😂😂 Shaq picked her up and gave her a huge hug! Truly a class act!!! Thank you Sir for being so gracious!!

He is one of the most authentic human beings I have ever met in my life. He was so gracious, and approachable during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Although the company I was working for, prohibited us from engaging with the athletes and entertainers in the course of our duties. The big fella went out of his way to engage with a few us, who were providing security for BMW, at one of their many booths during the Olmpic games. He is a big fella with a big heart. And he was a young man at time. So I knew...even then he would be special.

I ran into Shaq in the Bahamas with my wife and three kids and he took a picture with my kids. He was just walking around chillin and talking to everyone. The guy is so genuine and down to earth. Once again The Pivot has delivered.

I remember Shaquille when he was 14 yrs old on Ft. Sam Houston and his father Drill Sergeant Phil, his father walking through post dropping troops all over the post...lol. His dad was a great man to all the kids in the community. I am so proud to know that this young man. His dad really loved him and he cared. Congrats Shaquille you've succeeded..

He thinks about what could of been with Penny if he didn't leave, what would still be if he did right by his wife and not speaking more to his sister and Kobe before he passed. He never said he regretted anything about Kobe except reaching out to him more after that split. He's said on numerous occasions that the sit down he did for the NBA with Kobe was the first conversation face-to-face they had had since he left LA and the only time he saw Kobe after that was Kobe's last game. When he spoke about doing it his way, he was only talking about his playing career; nothing else included.

I can just see he wasn't contradicting himself, even though it can appear that way sometimes. I see what you see though. Maybe they should have commented to help him clarify and distinguish both points clearer at the end; I have just heard him speak on it enough in other settings to understand what he was saying overall.

Penny was a bum from 97-98 onward. 15 ppg for 99 Magic and got spanked by AI. Penny without Shaq went from 51% 21 and 7 to 44% 21 and 5.... Then 15 and 5 on 44% ... Lackluster outside of 95 and 96. Let alot to be desired outside of those two seasons.

By 98, Duncan with Robinson's help was in the second round as a rookie. By 99 he was champion. Before any of those other guys. By 99 Kobe was better than Penny. By 2000 he was better than Hill. AI was better than Penny and Hill by 2001. Possibly 2000. Definitely better than Penny by 1999. Carter was better than Hill by 01. Maybe 2000. TMAC better than Hill or Penny by 01. Sprewell was a ECFinalist and NBA finalist in 99 and 00. 04 he had the TWolves in the WCFinals with KG. He was a better early 2000's star than Penny or Hill. Nowitzki, Rasheed, Ben Wallace, Wade, LeBron came and all surpassed Penny and Hill by 01, 02, 03.
Penny and Hills prime literally died in their first 7 seasons. Penny by 98 in his 5th season. Hill by his 7th season same year Jordan was beginning certification of the crown 👑 the NBA was tailoring 🪡 for him since 1984... He sealed it approved by 93 his 9th season. Hill was at a greater teeter by 01. His 7th season and he'd miss the playoffs twice. He had missed the second round of the playoffs for 6 seasons. He was now let go by his original franchise and beginning his career with his second team by year 7.
They were duds. They deflated under massive expectations.
I remember in 99 Magic vs Lakers and I wasn't ready to cede to Kobe from Penny. Penny still had some light there that people wanted to believe in. Kobe's 33 second half points basically ended that. Hill and Penny were supposed to be obstacles for Kobe. Like the Magic and Bird Kobe had to wrestle control from. They weren't even in the ring. Kobe comfortably was in the ring with a shadow legend. Jordan was retired by 99.. he left an empty throne for anybody to take. Nobody could take it. Nobody had earned it from Jordan on the court in the most traditional way. The NBA crafted his legacy very well. He literally is a King 👑 that left unscathed. Undecapitated by a young gun.
Penny and Hill were Eastern Conference young guns from 95-98. They didn't touch MJ.. Shaq left before he could properly unseat Jordan for good. Then it was Shaq and Kobe after a plan delay in 99 that took it from Duncan and Robinson who took it from nobody. They literally avoided their BULLY the Jazz in 1999 and swept a what are you doing here? 99 Blazers in the WCF.
At least if 99 Spurs picked off Malone and Stockton and Ewing in 99 but NO! They picked off Rasheed and Brian Grant and Sabonis and Stoudamire and Sprewell and Houston and Camby and LJ... But nobody who actually carried a mantle in the 90's NBA. Who was a first Teamer of those players mentioned? Sprewell in 94? This interview had my attention from start to finish. Shaq is an awesome, humble man who I admire even more. Shaq is a great example to all males. He has listened, embraced wisdom and acknowledged his mistakes. I would hope to meet you Shaq one day. Love your honesty, maturity, humility and humor. Learnt alot here.

I met Shaq a few years ago. Most people see how generous he is. Hanging out money and gifts. He gave me the most incredible thing... 5 minutes of his time. He is simply incredible. Thank you Shaq for leading continuing to leave behind a legacy!

I had an opportunity to meet Shaq. Though he appeared to be intent on getting somewhere, he stopped, took a picture, engaged my husband and I in conversation; he was gracious, intelligent and caring.

It is refreshing to hear Shaq refuse to refer to the mothers of his children as "Baby Mamas." He's also an excellent example of a son who listens to the wisdom of a man who raised him as his own son. He could have easily used the cop-out "You're not my father!" He would have missed out on his purpose.

Shaq is genuinely a great man. Reminds me a lot of my father. Was raised in a military family and tried his best not to beat me, do other things. My dad was a man of few words but I had respect for him. And although a lot of my child hood was rough and my dad had a hard time being there for me he made sure to teach me that life was fucking hard and that you can become any person you decide to be. If you decide to be anyone though I try to emulate the humility, the comedian and the integrity that my father did his best to live up to. Thanks for at least giving some men a good role model shaq and a real man sees who his father was, his flaws, and accepts them .
As a woman who has felt the pain of betrayal and divorce from a man who has NEVER admitted anything till this day. This is just so so refreshing and pure. It doesn’t take a way the woman’s pain and those kids pain however, just to admit and “man Up” in this way would possibly ease the pain somewhat. Humans aren’t perfect but to admit the wrong and take responsibility for the hurt inflicted through us upon others will raise you and give you redemption! Amen to that! Much respect Shaq! But this show by far is the best with their ability to get their guests to truly express themselves, and give real insight into their lives.

As a 90s kid in Florida, Orlando Magic Shaq made me a forever fan !! i followed him to every team. Kazaam, Steel, cameo in Good Burger, music and all is solidified as Historic. Not to mention the most dominate player ever!!!

As I got older and wiser I took a look in the mirror and said hey your not perfect , you've done wrong before and you also have contributed to some of your conflicts now go and apologize to that man.

Hearing him talk about being a father, owning up to his flaws in the divorce, the praise he gives his dad, ever aspect of life he has become the shining example that every young man should look to when looking for a role model

I’m on at least my 7th time watching this show, and it’s still always amazing, funny, sad, rich, fascinating, profound.
This the kind of man strong women need as a husband. This is the kind of father children need. I wouldn’t care if he worked a regular 9-5. A man like this I can respect, honor and appreciate. I love the person he is showing to be. He’s inspiring, motivated, confident and smart.

@20:00 is why Shaq is my favorite. He took full ownership for his mistakes. He now realizes that these women aren't ride or die like the first wife. And Shaq is a GREAT storyteller.
This is what is needed in today's society. Shaq is speaking about accountability. Being able to own your decisions for success and failure. He gives credit to where it is due and doesn't shy away from the questions. Credit to the podcast members for keeping this type of environment where topics are discussed and laughter is the key.

I've never heard Shaq mention it (he might have) if he was influenced by Charles Barkley, but Charles was the first "straight talker" who didn't pull punches with the media, at least from the NBA.
