    How refreshing hearing someone talk the truth about skimmers, Venturi only skimmers will not only outlast needle wheels buy a factor of 10, but the varied bubble size is way more effective at exporting solids. Not that deltec et al will admit, making disposable expensive, crappy pumps is part of their business model 😞

    I love your videos and understand your "simplicity" concept. All that said I would really appreciate a video on Calcium Reactors. They remain somewhat of a mystery in how they operate despite watching other videos on the subject. You have a unique talent in paring down a subject to its most essential points and you can hopefully do the same for this subject.

    I am a newb in keeping saltwater fish. I've been keeping freshwater fish since 2003. I started off keeping a saltwater tank about 2 years ago. I started with a 20 gallon tank, now I'm at a 75-gallon tank. I now need to know more about skimmers, and corals and what not. This video helped a lot. Thanks!

  • @joec2174
    @joec2174 Před 3 lety

    OneNote : salt creep will build up in the Venturi air intake fitting. This will stop bubble production and yet raise the water level in the body of the skimmers and on hob skimmers this can cause a flood .

  • @jeremybw2180
    @jeremybw2180 Před 4 lety

    So you could, essentially, use your display tank as a skimmer simply by using a submerged powerhead with a venturi and a surface skimming filter intake. The powerhead would produce microbubbles in the tank which eventually gets 'skimmed' by the the filter intake.

    ADsorption not ABsortion is the process protein skimmers work under. It’s technically a chemical process, not mechanical or biological. It’s been many years since I researched them but knowing the type of process they perform can help you decide how well the skimmer is performing adsorption. One other note, adsorption is exothermic and likes lower temp. I’ve always believed my skimmers work better at 76 degrees than 78, up, etc...

  • @goodall1bay
    @goodall1bay Před 5 lety

    I believe if you do not use a protein skimmer, you can use macro algae to absorb the dissolved waste elements instead of mechanically removing it.

    I don’t run a protein skimmer. I run an algae scrubber. Built it for about $20, but dumped about $150 for good waterproof grow lights. Wanted to keep it more natural so to speak. Won’t say I will never run one, will probably get one for the frag tank I’m setting up, but I’ve got 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrites, and about 5ppm nitrates.

    No body on you tube your self included says where in sump I put my skimmer first section with filter sock, middle , return,and any disadvantages to its position. Other than that top man

    • @nathan3780
      @nathan3780 Před 7 lety

      A skimmer should not go with the return pump or anywhere else that the water level will fluctuate in the sump, if at all possible. This would cause issues with the skimmer’s water and bubble level, leading to inefficient or almost nonexistent returns from the skimmer’s work as organics are recombined with tank water. It is debatably preferable to have the skimmer before any media reactors, because although the reactors will be freed of the organics which the skimmer removes and their subsequent chemical breakdown, the often expensive to replace pump of the skimmer will have a slightly harder time. This should not be a worry, though, since you referenced a filter sock, which would remove most or all of the potentially harmful particles (but still must be cleaned frequently to remove organic particles before their breaking down).
      In summary, the skimmer should be placed before any reactors, but after the (frequently cleaned or changed) filter sock has done its job.
