It's honestly pretty common for countries that went from 3rd world to 1st world in just a few decades to become obsessed with flaunting wealth. Especially in homogonous cultures where it's less about individuality and more about "what does your neighbor think of you?". South Korea has a similar problem. America goes through wealth flaunting phases too. The 19th to early 20th century were pretty big on that (until the Great Depression), and then the early 2000s were big on "new money vs old money" where the growing appeal of TV stars (think the likes of Paris Hilton, the Kardashians or that My Sweet 16 TV show) caused a rise in wealth flaunting for "new money" celebs. Then 2008 happened and people hated seeing rich people. There's always this rise and fall of flaunting luxury goods depending on the economy.

Reminds me on a bank in my country whose customer services is known to be the best. The largest Indonesian private bank. Its top management openly said that many of its high caliber priority clients (with a lot of money) often come to their branches to do their business only with T-shirt and slippers (particularly in market districts in large cities and or Chinese descent folks in my place, those who were born locally.)

One of his female employees was friends with him on FB, saw his posts, bogus sexual harassment claim filed against him wanting $250k 2 months after I warned him. People don't realize looking rich is like painting a target on your back for scammers and predators.

My wife once worked for some (allegedly) German aristocrat. She said probably his son is the real rich one, because everytime her boss discusses his business with the son, the son just rolls his eyes. It is probable, in my opinion, his son funds him to just play around, one of the toy was a charity organization, he also have a personal chauffeur, my wife once sent abroad along with her PA only to check on his repaired yacht, he will go through secret entrances at 5 stars hotels and fancy clubs escorted by the security, my wife never actually finds out his real background. If you’re rich, you don’t show it, you don’t want people to know, it attracts unnecessary attention. There are only 2 types of rich people who rakes in attention: salesperson, or politicians.

This is all Asian countries with the face filters. If you see any Korean or Japanese girl dancing they have the face filters. It tracks in real time so you can dance and move. You can notice the chin shape change as they dance if you pay close attention. I don't understand this phenomenon. Why do people waste their precious time watching someone waste money on the internet? I don't care at all whether a person is rich or pretends to be because I'm not interested in this type of content at all. Shopping streaming? People, this is an old trick of traders: it's now or never, this opportunity will never happen again... My country is also full of fake millionaires who want to promote themselves in the media. Some people are so caricatured that from the very beginning you can see that they are pretending. It's a waste of time on them when there are so many more interesting things to see and experience 😊❤

The fact is that a vast majority of Chinese people are entirely disinterested in watching these shallow manipulations. This is why it always turns into a sales event, for If they were authentic rich that would be a heinously shameful scenario. Imagine you have billions of dollars (or Yuan) and you feel a need to go hawking fake designer goods online, instead of hiring others to do that for you. So then there is the crux of it. These false characters must clearly be the hired help.
Furthermore I believe that laws against flaunting wealth are a damn good idea. Why would any society want their impressionable kids to be roped into thinking this vanity makes people better than the rest. So it goes here in the west where the absolute best thing you could ever be is a narcissistic trust fund baby. And the young are too ignorant to see the wool being pulled over their eyes as they fund this madness with their attention.
