  • This Incredible yet non-technical Canyon turned out to be anything but Simple, it started with a beautiful & easy yet long, 12 mile, 4X4 approach road, leading to a 5 mile hike into the canyon. From there I opted to float back, utilizing the VERY Muddy Dirty Devil river to reunite with my motorcycle. Things did not go exactly according to plan. After several Failed Attempts to Surmount the Stunning Shear Walled River Canyon I finally found an escape route miles past my planned river take out point. It all work out fine but there was definitely a few moments of Suspense! Thank you Google Earth Mapping beta!

    I parked my 4-wheeler where you parked your bike. This hike is no joke tougher than it looks! And now I hear the BLM has closed the road on Black Jump about the point you first see the river, making the hike about 3 miles longer. Fantastic canyon for sure! We went in November & had it all to ourselves.

You’re like a cat with 9 lives, you have the skill to survive and succeed. And by the way, the drone footage was pretty darn good as well. Now it’s time for you to get ready for the next adventure! Thanks, Lynn

    Hey man this was a fantastic video to run across! I dont know how you made that mapping tour sequence at the beginning but it was very cool & super top tier way to start an adventure video.
    I'm from down that way and went back this summer after being gone 20 years. Had such an amazing time in that same area. Didn't go on the journey you did but I plan to one day soon. It's where I live in my heart & it was really cool to see what iv missed here in your adventure. Thank you for these excellent videography skills you have presented.

    I've driven to the point where you parked the motorcycle, I need to recruit a companion to go with me to hike down to the canyon later this year. It is definitely a rough road getting to that point, I've read lots of stories of people who tried to get there without the right vehicle and couldn't make it.

    Hey Karl! I was wondering what gps you use (if you use one) Trying to make a good purchase for some of the 14er traverses that you have done - and I plan to do.

      For navigation I use my i phone and I use the app, "Map out," once you spend the $, $6 when I got it, it has all free downloadable maps with many many off beat trails already on the maps, easy to draw your own "routes" as well before heading out. The topo lines aren't that tight though. . . I also like the Road Trip Ryan's app that comes with GPS/GPX tracks for complex desert trips. I use the REI "MTB project and Hiking project apps as well, free. . . I do also carry a Garmin inreach mini mainly for the oh Shit factor but I do occasionally Sat text my wife for her piece of mind. Last, the 14er.com app, also free I believe, is a treasure trove of info & maps with GPS functions, a bit more complex to use but still not bad at all.

    "its stressful not to know the outcome" Back in the day....just rumors that there was this canyon. No signs, no trails, no carins. How to find the canyon,how to get down, how to get out and always the big concern was to find your vehicle in the dusk. I would have loved to have a GPS when searching frantically to find my vehicle before dark While I envy the amount of information you have, I always thought discovery was the reward and you needed route finding skills to find anything and most critical how to get out. Looks like you had a taste of that coming out. Of course this primitive information meant you missed a lot and even know that something existed. Same canyons, different times, different tools and skills. That said I love your videos.

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  Před rokem

      I think about this all the time Hank, it’s a major conundrum. Having so much information at my fingertips has definitely allowed me to see and do way more but, has also weakened me by causing such a huge dependency. I definitely think the desert is generally a little more dangerous as well, fewer major landmarks, less visibility, and no reliable water. Big mountains above tree line is pretty easy, I feel like I could last a couple days up there versus running out of water in the desert quickly trapped inside, inflammable, sheer walls
      I’m not sure what’s better, GPS and Internet information or not? I do know more people get in trouble these days, lol. Cheers brother, thanks for the support.

      I agree, my video from last week and even more from this coming video show that change. But, I will say this, if you were there you would be saying the same thing, it was stunning after a cool wet spring. . .
