    Just so you know the see thru scarfs arent costumie, my mother born 1919 and sister born 1944 had dozens of these they wore almost daily, eather around the neck, on a poney, tied around the head like a head band or folded corner to corner and tied under the chin. As did almost everyone they knew. I still have a pile of them. They were very common to wear because they were so versitile.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  Před 5 lety +4

      Thank you! When I say costumey here I mostly mean that they are interpreted as costumey by the general public/people who don't know much about vintage style, as of course, as you say, they are indeed very accurate. Sheer nylon scarves are just so often included in "poodle skirt" "vintage girl" Halloween costumes and the like, so I think they can make an outfit appear more like a costume as opposed to just one's regular clothes sometimes due to that perception.

      @@TheClosetHistorian I use the sheer-ish nylon scarves to cover roller sets while they dry. If I'm going out to the store, I do opaque, but the sheer ones hold that hair in nicely.

    Why can I never find and/or make outfits as beautiful as you!?! 😭 Seriously!?! I've spent literally hours digging through every rack in every Goodwill in my general area, and I usually still walk away empty handed. When I do find things that work stylistically, they're usually nowhere near my size. And then when I try to style the clothes I can actually wear, it still seems to fall short of the vintage aesthetic, even if I have all the correct components... You wanna be my stylist? 🤷

      Ive realized that i never find good stuff at my local goodwills. Instead I tend to find the good stuff on local thrift stores. Maybe try looking into local thrift stores that are not chains such as goodwill or salvation army. If that fails too, then try second hand online stores such as depop or poshmark. I've found a bunch of good vintage stuff on depop for fair prices. Etsy also has good things but they tend to be overpriced. Poshmark is the cheapest but theres less variety.

    I know the joy of managing to hunt out any affordable silk shirts & scarves when second-hand-shopping!! 😄 Sadly most of our local places seem to have finally caught on and are pricing up their silk scarves massively, so picking those up is getting harder...? and silk blouses of course were already hen's teeth, as they just don't last the way other fabrics do. Still occasionally manage to ferret something out at the more out-of-the-way places, but usually have to settle for being excited if I can just find a 100% cotton shirt that fits (even that is a little tricky in this age of polyester! 😏)

    Casual Corner was a very popular mall store in the 70s and 80s.

    Casual Corner was a store in our mall back in the 70s. It had cute, young clothes. They were a bit pricey.

    Love your style...
    It's so lovely to see feminine ladies still dress like ladies! Love it! The colours as well as the use of vintage. Very unique.

    Wow i really love your vintage outfit. The 80's/90's does 40's and 50's inspired outfit look great on you. That nautical dad shirt with that red pencil skirt is very cute, you pulled it off, very vintage. I am more in the 70's style inspired but still your video inspired me.

    Well I don't really know anything about vintage clothing, but I love old time things and history. I love your videos! SO cool and interesting. My hobby is actually riding horses so way off but still love your videos!

      Thank you Hailee! I have only very rarely been able to ride horses myself, but I do love to do so! The last time was several years ago when I was visiting a family friend in France and she brought me to one of her friends property to ride one of his big farm work horses around which felt very sturdy. She was so nervous since I'm not very used to riding, especially on a European style saddle, so she made me wear her helmet even though we were going quite slowly around the pretty yellow rapeseed fields :)

    Honestly I think it looked really feminine on with the red skirt, very retro looking and gorgeous. A pencil skirt it would turn heads, especially with your body shape!

    Great picks! The Heraldry blouse is lovely! My first impression of the print was 1920's Greek/Egyptian revival, so I would suggest styling it open over black wide leg trousers and top with a gold belt and cloche hat (a la Miss Fisher), or tied as you had it with a tea length skirt or slip dress, 20s/30s mary jane kitten heels, and seamed stockings. Love your collections, and looking forward to your next one!

      Thank you Jeanie! I really have been neglecting 20's fashion lately for a few years, I certainly need some wide legged early 20th century trousers in many colors too, as I have none!
