- 🔴 EN The Roman Catholic Church is located in Piața Mare in Sibiu. It was built in the period 1726-1733 in the spirit of early Viennese Baroque. After 1689, the Jesuits obtained several shops in the Great Market. When they asked for land from the city hall to build a church in the center of Sibiu, they were rejected. In 1721, the imperial general Damian Hugo von Virmond intervened in the dispute and managed to obtain several neighboring properties for the Jesuits, where they could build the church and seminary. The foundation stone was laid in 1726, and the church was consecrated on September 13, 1733, by the bishop of Transylvania Gregor von Sorger.
Later, in 1738, a baroque bell tower was added to the building, separate from the nave. In order to build the tower, the civil authorities imposed the condition of guaranteeing a public corridor between Piața Mare and Piața Mică, on the site of the old medieval passage called Schlosserloch also known as "Locksmith's Hole".
The interior structure of the Jesuit Church in Sibiu is that of a hall church, rectangular in shape, with a tribune on the southern side. Notable inside are the massive pilasters supporting the vault.
Originally, the interior of the church was whitewashed and the windows were provided with colorless glass, which made the church much brighter than today. Changes over time probably led to changes in its original appearance.
The nave painting is attributed to the German artist Ludwig Kandler and was made in 1904. This painting adds an important artistic and historical dimension, representing a significant part of the church's cultural heritage.
The current church organ, with 24 registers, was made by the Viennese craftsman Carl Hesse in 1860.

I love touring old churches like this with the amazing paintings and columns and stained glass. These places are such a work of art and a great setting to inspire worship. It is even more amazing to me that this one was built almost 300 years ago. I am not sure we could build such an amazing looking building today even after all our advances in technology. What a beautiful church both inside and out. Unfortunately, we don't have churches as those found in Europe. The European churches are like world-class art museums to me. I went through Sibiu on a train but did not stop. I would like to visit.
