- 🔴 EN The Council Tower in Sibiu is an emblematic symbol strategically located between the two main squares of the city, Piața Mare and Piața Mică. Its name derives from its original function of defending the town hall building, documented as early as 1324.
Originally a fortification tower, having the role of defense in the second enclosure of the fortification, the Council Tower suffered a partial collapse in 1585, as a result of an earthquake. The ground floor and first two floors today preserve the original construction from the 13th century.
In 1588, the tower was rebuilt with the contribution of the townspeople. In 1720, the watchmen of the tower were ordered by the magistrate to beat the drum every half hour. The roof has seen changes over time. The current shape of the tower dates from the reconstruction works from 1824-1826.
Access to the interior is through a small door, from where a spiral staircase leads to the upper floors. There are 141 steps to the top level. On the penultimate floor, the clock mechanism can be seen, and the top floor offers a panoramic view of the old city.

Legend has it that Hermann was the name of the one who founded the city in 1191 on the site of an old Roman fort, hence the German name of the city Hermannstadt.
