    The "special purpose masse cue" is something used in 3-Rail & Artistic Billiards. A player can use up to 20 cues in Artistic Billiards, and most players will have several different masse cues.

    I'm English, passionate about cue sports, particularly snooker. I've talked crap about U.S pool players more times than I can count. "They wouldn't last 5 minutes on a snooker table!!", "They genuinely think they're talented???!!", every possible slur's been thrown at them. But my views aren't entirely true, to be honest, not after watching more pool tournaments. It's shots like these that open your eyes to the truth. What would be considered an exhibition/trick shot, 'showboating' or even reckless in snooker is actually quite typical in U.S pool. Potting balls 'cushion first' (coming off a rail, hitting the object ball and potting it), potting with 'plants' and 'cannons' (hitting the object ball, which then hits a second object ball to pot, OR hitting the object ball in a way that directs the white to hit another object ball and pot, after contact), even jump shots! Not sure about the whole calling themselves athletes, bit offensive to an actual athlete in my opinion but they've got talent for definite.
    One thing I will say however, is snooker players have far better cueball control, they're miles away from any pool player. They're far more accurate potters (the pockets are unbelievably tight, pool table pockets are like buckets in comparison), and far superior tacticians (putting your opponent in trouble with snookers, putting balls they need on cushions) whilst doing it all with a single cue and a gloveless hand 🤣

    • @DrDaveBilliards

    I find it amazing to see that in most of the slow motion shots, a great majority of these shots are technically illegal. It's abundantly clear at 1:14 that's a double hit, but just too fast for anybody to detect. edit: should have watched the whole video before commenting. :)

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  Před rokem +2

      I was a little surprised to see this also. But all of these shots are kind of "extreme" ... power fouette, highly-elevated near-vertical jump, highly-elevated masse. They don't come up in real games often.

    • @mungtor
      @mungtor Před rokem +1

      @@DrDaveBilliards Agreed 100%. Most of these shots have a low percentage of even being executed by mere mortals as opposed to Venom. Unless really trapped, almost all of us would have a better chance at a well-executed bank shot than some of these options.

    Super cool video, Dr. Dave! Is there a way to avoid the secondary contact on massé shots, or is it not much of an issue since high speed cameras are not available and massé shots are accepted in tournaments and such? Thanks Dr. Dave!

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The only way I know to avoid it is to not near-vertical-cue massė shots. But it doesn’t really matter since fouls could not be called unless super slow motion replay is available.

    Thank you, Dr Dave you always have something new and insightful to share. I was unaware the cueball was responsible for the burn marks, I just assumed it was the playing cue. What do you recommend a person can do to be able to practice these types of shoots and limit the damage on the table bed?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  Před rokem +3

      If you use a piece of spare cloth under the CB, you won't leave any burn marks or damage on the table's cloth. Here's an example:

    These super slo-mo hi-res videos make me wonder how often double hits occur in regular play and just aren't perceived by the naked eye. Then I wonder if it would even be good for the game if this type of video could be used to review shots in professional tournaments. What do you think Dr. Dave? If minor and imperceptible double hits do occasionally occur throughput play, should players be penalized for something only hi-res cameras can see? Do you think this would take some of the excitement out of the game by making players less inclined to take challenging/technical shots?

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  Před rokem +3

      In normal play, most double hits are perceptible by observing CB motion per the info and demos here:
      billiards.colostate.edu/faq/foul/double-hit/
      Luckily, the examples in my recent videos occur only with extreme shots almost never played in match situations. They are mostly trick/proposition/challenge shots. I don’t think super-high-speed cameras should be used to “look for fouls” with shots like this during play.

    I see so noooow the softer tip helps increase spin because of the longer contact time. Seem like you are rebutting your other recent video where you're testing tip hardness and how much spin you can generate on the cueball with the conclusion of the video that tip hardness doesn't matter when it comes to generating spin on the cueball.

    • @DrDaveBilliards
      @DrDaveBilliards  Před rokem +1

      The tip hardness matters only with jump shots, where you need a really hard tip and light cue, per the info and demos in my "Jump Shot Physics in Super Slow Motion" video:
      czcams.com/video/sMxATS8C2BQ/video.html
      and with highly-elevated masse shots, where you need to jam the CB down into the table while maintaining contact, without the CB trying to hop too much, per the info and demos in this video.
